Abstract

Spiritual care is a vital component of holistic nursing, particularly for patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses. It addresses existential suffering and supports emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being. This review aims to identify and synthesize evidence-based standards for spiritual nursing care in patients with chronic illnesses, particularly those in palliative care settings. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using six databases PubMed, ProQuest, DOAJ, ScienceDirect, Garuda, and Google Scholar focusing on peer-reviewed articles published between 2018 and 2024. Articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure relevance and quality. The findings highlight several key standards in spiritual nursing care: acknowledging and respecting patients' spiritual beliefs, offering compassionate emotional and psychological support, and fostering meaning and hope at the end of life. The literature consistently emphasizes the need for an individualized, culturally sensitive, and holistic approach. Integrating spiritual care into routine palliative nursing practice has been shown to improve coping, reduce distress, and enhance overall quality of life for chronically ill patients. Addressing the spiritual needs of patients with chronic illness is essential for delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care. Developing evidence-based spiritual care standards can enhance the effectiveness of palliative care and support patients in achieving peace, meaning, and well-being.

Abstract

Hospitalization often triggers anxiety in preschool children due to unfamiliar environments, parental separation, and invasive procedures. Storytelling-based nursing communication has shown promise as an effective intervention to reduce this anxiety. This systematic review explores the effectiveness and influencing factors of hospitalization anxiety in children aged 3–6 years. Literature was searched from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for studies published between 2020 and 2025. Nine experimental or quasi-experimental studies from Indonesia, Iran, Brazil, Italy, and Turkey met the inclusion criteria, all involving nurse-led storytelling interventions. Most studies reported significant reductions in anxiety. Key influencing factors included age, length of stay, hospitalization history, parental presence, and storytelling methods. The intervention consistently enhanced emotional comfort, reduced fear, and strengthened nurse-child interaction. In conclusion, storytelling is an effective non-pharmacological strategy to reduce hospitalization anxiety in preschool children and supports child-centered nursing care when tailored to the child’s developmental stage, experiences, parental involvement, and cultural context.

Abstract

Standardized nursing documentation is essential for ensuring consistency, accountability, and quality in patient care. In Indonesia, the 3S framework—comprising the Standar Diagnosa Keperawatan Indonesia (SDKI), Standar Luaran Keperawatan Indonesia (SLKI), and Standar Intervensi Keperawatan Indonesia (SIKI) serves as a national standard. However, its application in inpatient settings remains inconsistent due to the lack of integrated, user-friendly tools. This study aimed to develop and validate a nursing care documentation instrument based on the 3S framework to improve documentation accuracy, support clinical decision-making, and promote standardization in inpatient wards. A Research and Development (R&D) approach was employed, using a modified Borg and Gall model across five stages: preliminary study, planning, product development, expert validation, and limited field testing. Data were gathered through literature reviews, chart audits, clinical interviews, and focus group discussions with nurses. The instrument was designed to address the 12 most frequently encountered nursing diagnoses in general medical-surgical wards, which were systematically mapped to appropriate SLKI outcomes and SIKI interventions. The final tool features structured diagnosis formats (PES, PR, PS), outcome targets with timelines, and categorized interventions (observation, treatment, education, collaboration), implemented in a shift-based checklist format. Validation by five expert nurses yielded strong content validity (I-CVI range: 0.833–1.000), and field testing with 15 clinical nurses demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (KR-20: 0.790–0.845). Additionally, 87% of nurses reported improvements in documentation quality and workflow efficiency. In conclusion, the 3S-based nursing care instrument is valid, reliable, and practical for clinical use, and its adoption is recommended to enhance nursing documentation standards and the quality of care in hospital settings.

Abstract

Introduction: Domestic wastewater significantly contributes to environmental degradation due to its elevated Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), indicating the concentration of organic contaminants that deplete oxygen in aquatic ecosystems. Biofilter-based treatment technologies, both aerobic and anaerobic, have emerged as sustainable alternatives; nonetheless, their comparative efficacy remains inadequately investigated. Discussion: This systematic study, adhering to PRISMA principles, evaluates the efficacy of aerobic and anaerobic biofilters in diminishing BOD levels in home wastewater. A thorough literature search utilizing Publish or Perish software across five databases Scopus, DOAJ, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar was conducted to find pertinent articles published from 2019 to 2025. Of the 1210 articles initially discovered, ten satisfied the inclusion criteria according to the PICOS framework. Research indicates that both aerobic and anaerobic systems markedly decrease BOD values. Aerobic biofilters provide quick organic matter decomposition and superior removal efficiency, while anaerobic systems are beneficial for energy conservation and diminished sludge production. Numerous studies underscore the improved effectiveness of hybrid or sequential biofilter systems, demonstrating a synergistic impact when both approaches are utilized together. Conclusion: Both aerobic and anaerobic biofilters effectively reduce BOD levels in home wastewater. Hybrid systems offer a notably advantageous solution by amalgamating the qualities of both methods. Future study must concentrate on refining operational parameters and assessing the long-term scalability of integrated biofilter technology to enhance sustainable wastewater management.
