This research focused on teaching concrete nouns and action verbs, including their spelling, meaning, and use in sentences. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two classes: an experimental class (VIII C) and a control class (VIII A), each consisting of 20 students selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted using pretests and posttests to measure changes in vocabulary knowledge before and after the intervention. The experimental class utilized the Duolingo application, while the control class did not receive this treatment. After the posttest, the researcher used statistical analysis to evaluate whether there was a significant difference between the two classes. Based on the data analysis tests, the mean pretest score for the experimental class was 30.62, compared to 35.97 for the control class. After administering the treatment, the mean score on the posttest for the experimental class was 66.45, which is significantly higher than the mean score of 36.96 for the control class. Using a significance level of 0.05, the researcher found that the calculated t-value of 7.50 exceeded the t-value of 1.687 from the t-table. It indicates that the hypothesis was accepted. Abstract

This study focuses on the effectiveness of using the Duolingo application in teaching vocabulary to grade XI. This study used a quasi-experimental design with two classes: experimental and control. The experimental class received treatment using Duolingo media, while the control class was taught using conventional media. Pre-tests and post-tests were used to assess improvements in students’ vocabulary. The results of the study indicate that the use of the Duolingo application is effective and can improve students’ vocabulary, as evidenced by the average score of the experimental class increasing from 78.10 to 95.5. The Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference between the two classes (p<0.05), indicating that the use of the Duolingo application is effective in teaching vocabulary. In addition, the findings reveal that students in the experimental class demonstrated higher levels of engagement, motivation, and confidence when learning new vocabulary through the application. The interactive features of Duolingo, such as gamification and immediate feedback, contributed to a more meaningful learning experience. These advantages suggest that mobile-based language learning tools like Duolingo can play a significant role in enhancing language acquisition in formal educational settings. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers consider integrating technology-enhanced instructional media to complement traditional teaching methods in order to maximize students’ outcomes in vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of limited vocabulary mastery among grade X students at MAN Insan Cendekia Kota Palu, which hampers their ability to communicate effectively in English. The objective was to determine whether the use of picture cards as a teaching medium could significantly improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group taught with picture cards and a control group taught with conventional methods. The sample consisted of 46 students, selected randomly and divided equally into experimental and control classes. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, and analysed using a t-test. The findings revealed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 62.48 in the pre-test to 81.91 in the post-test, while the control group only improved from 58.09 to 65.87. The t-counted value (4.38) exceeded the t-table value (1.681) at the 0.05 significance level, confirming that picture cards had a significant positive effect on vocabulary mastery. Beyond score improvement, students in the experimental class also showed greater participation and motivation during learning activities. These findings suggest that visual media, particularly picture cards, can be effectively integrated into EFL classrooms to foster engagement and enhance vocabulary learning outcomes on a broader scale.

Abstract

Many junior high school students struggle with writing skills, particularly in composing procedural texts, which require the ability to organize ideas, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and understand text structure. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using visual media in enhancing students’ ability to write procedural texts. The research was conducted at MTs Negeri 4 Kota Palu with Grade IXB students as subjects, employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, implemented over two cycles. Data were collected through observation, interviews, field notes, and writing tests, and analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results show a significant improvement in students’ writing skills following the implementation of image-based instruction. In the first cycle, 57% of students met the Minimum Mastery Criterion (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal, KKM), which increased to 85% in the second cycle. Visual media proved effective in helping students comprehend content, logically sequence steps, and use imperative sentences more effectively. Additionally, the use of images enhanced student engagement, confidence, and learning motivation. The study concludes that integrating visual media, such as images, is an effective instructional strategy for developing procedural text writing skills. Practically, teachers are encouraged to incorporate visual media into writing instruction as an innovative approach that supports language development and classroom interaction.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify and describe the psychological factors affecting the speaking performance of third-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design using a survey method with 100 randomly selected respondents. The instruments used were adapted from standardized scales: the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, the Speaking Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS version 25, focusing on frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The results revealed that students experienced a high level of anxiety (M = 3.13) and low self-confidence (M = 2.03), both of which served as psychological barriers in speaking English. Conversely, students demonstrated high motivation (M = 3.53) and positive attitudes (M = 3.59) toward English-speaking activities, which acted as psychological strengths enhancing engagement and persistence in learning. Overall, these findings suggest that emotional and motivational factors significantly influence students’ speaking performance. Therefore, it is recommended that lecturers foster a supportive learning environment that reduces anxiety, enhances confidence, and maintains students’ motivation and positive attitudes toward English learning.
