Abstract

Thyroid hormone is vital for children's growth and metabolism, relying on sufficient iodine levels for synthesis. Maternal intake determines iodine supply to fetuses and children under two years old. This study aimed to correlate offspring thyroid function with maternal iodine status in coastal areas. A cohort study was conducted, involving pregnant coastal residents. Maternal urinary iodine levels were measured via the ammonium persulfate method, while offspring thyroid stimulating hormones (TSHs) and free thyroxine hormone (fT4) levels were assessed using electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Iodine intake was determined through a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The correlation between offspring thyroid function and maternal iodine status was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test. Differences in TSHs and fT4 levels among iodine status groups were examined using the One way-ANOVA test. Maternal iodine status was insufficient with a median urinary iodine of 125 μg/L, resulting in a 60.8% prevalence of iodine insufficiency. Iodine intake (62.20±43.45 μg/day) fell short of recommended levels (RDA). Offspring TSH was 2.29±1.07 μIU/mL, fT4 was 1.26±0.14 ng/dL. TSH and fT4 concentrations showed no significant inter-group differences (p=0.852, p=0.075). Offspring thyroid function did not correlate with maternal iodine status (TSHs: p=0.314; fT4: p=0.258). Offspring thyroid function did not correlate to maternal iodine status in a population of iodine-insufficient and mercury-contaminated coastal areas.

Abstract

Evaluation of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is required to assess medical students’ skills in order to meet the Indonesian medical doctor competency standards. This study presents an innovative method for developing a mobile app-based OSCE evaluation system in Med Stud Games (MSG) and explores its condition. To evaluate MSG, we use the focus group discussion (FGD) method. We use a purposeful sampling approach, consisting of a content expert, medical education expert and medical students. The result of an experience in using MSG for two OSCE training was discussed in FGD. Data was analyzed using in vivo coding and divided into categories to advantages, problems, content, interface, and future improvements. The FGD results in 19 codes. Advantages are categorized as easy to use, fast, practical, and automation timer and scoring. Problems categorized in distraction potential of incoming calls and notifications and online only. Content results in the validity of score and checklist quality. Interface results in font size and layout. Future improvement results in saving and sharing data, open feedback and text, and user-generated content. MSG improve assessment and feedback qualities for medical students. Further observational studies are needed to assess OSCE validation to be used in exam settings

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are being studied extensively as nanostructures for novel and enhanced biomedical applications. Nanoparticles in bone grafts have been shown to speed up fracture healing by providing a finer structure for bone tissue engineering. They are known to have excellent antimicrobial properties due to their high surface-to-volume ratio and small particle size, without affecting the material's mechanical properties. AgNPs' distinct property makes them the preferred filler in a wide range of biomaterials, where they play an important role in enhancing properties. AgNP-containing biomaterials can be easily tailored to meet specific requirements in the development of bone tissue. Adjusting size, shape, composition, and surface charge can enhance their effectiveness in interacting with bone cells, promoting cell attachment, and delivering growth factors. Using AgNP-based biomaterials can help prevent or reduce the formation of biofilms. The utilization of these materials in bone tissue engineering has demonstrated potential in treating musculoskeletal conditions and bone traumas. They are versatile for various applications such as bone implants, scaffolds, wound dressings, and antibiotic delivery systems. This review will cover several special topics, including silver-based biomaterials, toxic properties, morphology and mechanical properties of silver-based biomaterials, and applications of silver-based biomaterials in medical applications.

Abstract

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a malignancy that arises due to abnormal growth of body cells that appear in the nasopharyngeal area, namely the area above the throat and behind the nose. Almost 60% of malignant tumors of the head and neck are nasopharyngeal carcinomas, followed by malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses (18%), larynx (16%), and oral cavity tumors. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is endemic in certain regions of the world, especially in Southeast Asia, and has a poor prognosis, with the highest incidence in southern China. Indonesia is one of the countries with a high prevalence of nasopharyngeal cancer patients. The average prevalence recorded is 6.2 cases per 100,000 Indonesian population with 13,000 new cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma each year.

Abstract

Tonsillitis is a disease that is often found in society and can affect all age groups. However, the most common occurrence is in the children's. Tonsillitis can occur acutely, chronically or chronic acute exacerbation, depending on the duration and frequency of infection. The prevalence of tonsillitis globally shows a fairly high number, especially in developing countries. There are several risk factors that play a role in the high prevalence of tonsillitis in Indonesia including air pollution, poor sanitation, and exposure to infection in dense environments. Public awareness is considered lacking in early detection and treatment of tonsillitis often causes delays in treatment. The purpose of this health education is to provide understanding and increase the knowledge of the community visiting the polyclinic at the NTB Provincial Hospital regarding tonsillitis, its risk factors, symptoms, and how to prevent it. In this educational activity, participants were very enthusiastic about following each explanation of the material presented. Some of the education participants also asked questions about tonsillitis and its complications during the discussion session. This can be used as a benchmark as well as a reference and evaluation material for implementing similar activities in the future.

Abstract

Nasopharyngeal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Indonesia, especially head and neck cancer. One of the etiology of this cancer is infection with Epstein-Barr virus. Early diagnosis is difficult to establish because the early signs and symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are not specific. Examination of latent membrane protein-1 (LMP1) oncogene expression and BCL2-associated X (BAX) gene expression proved to be useful in the identification of nasopharyngeal cancer. LMP1 oncogene is an oncogene that functions as a tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR), so that apoptosis does not occur and promotes invasion and metastasis. The BAX gene is a pro-apoptotic gene that inhibits cancer development, but its regulation will be downregulated by LMP1 because LMP can protect B-cells from apoptosis.
