Abstract

This study aimed to determine the therapeutic effect of West Indian elm leaf extract on coronary artery atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemia Wistar rats. Cholesterol, a key factor in the pathophysiology of coronary heart disease, is present in fat-containing diets. Orlistat is one of the medications that can reduce blood cholesterol levels, but since it has side effects, herbs are more preferable to it. One such herbal plant, West Indian elm (Guazuma ulmifolia), contains tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and flavonoids, secondary metabolites that carry the properties necessary to reduce blood cholesterol levels, in its leaves. In this experimental study, which focused on histopathological parameters to see the scale of progression of coronary artery atherosclerosis, 30 Wistar rats were induced with a high-fat diet and divided into 6 sample groups, consisting of three control groups (normal, negative, and positive) and three treatment groups (which received a West Indian elm leaf extract at 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 g/kgBW). Significant results were obtained from both Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p<0.05) between the negative control group and the positive control group, between the negative control group and treatment group 2 (0.4 g/kgBW), and between the negative control group and treatment group 3 (0.8 g/kgBW). In conclusion, this study proved that West Indian elm (Guazuma ulmifolia) leaf extract reduces the development of coronary atherosclerosis and shares a similarity in therapeutic effect with orlistat.

Abstract

Background In Indonesia, congenital abnormalities are still very high. Neural Tube Defect (NTD) is one of the most common congenital abnormalities. NTD occurs due to the failure of neural plate closing. One of the risk factors for NTD is folic acid deficiency. Drug use during pregnancy is one of the risk factors for congenital abnormalities. Cotrimoxazole is an anti-folate drug that still has pros and cons regarding its potential to cause NTD. Human embryonic brain development can be simulated using chicken embryos. This study aimed to determine the effect of Cotrimoxazole on the development of the chicken embryo's neural tube. Methods This study used a post-test-only control group design. The number of samples is 30 eggs and the sampling method was simple random sampling. The dose of Cotrimoxazole used was 0; 60; and 120 mg/kg per egg then the eggs were incubated for 72 hours. Data analysis was based on sample characteristics and bivariate analysis using the comparative Kruskal-Wallis test with the post-hoc test. Results In this study, 11 out of 30 eggs could be analyzed. The results were obtained by observing the number of brain vesicles. There was a significant difference in the number of brain vesicles (p= 0.046) between the study groups from the Kruskal-Wallis test. Conclusions Cotrimoxazole administration showed an effect on neural tube development of chicken embryos when compared to controls.

Abstract

AbstractIncreased blood sugar levels can be triggered by increased intake or insulin resistance, leading to increased oxidative stress that affects sperm quality during spermatogenesis. Moringa oleifera, rich in antioxidants, has been proven effective in improving sperm quality through several studies. This study aims to evaluate the influence of moringa leaf extract on sperm morphology and the reduction of blood sugar levels in Sprague Dawley white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by alloxan. Fasting blood sugar tests showed that rats induced with alloxan without moringa leaf extract had the highest blood sugar levels among the groups. In contrast, the negative control and treatment groups with moringa leaf extract successfully maintained blood sugar levels at normal levels. Normal sperm morphology reached 94.5% in the treatment group with the highest dose of moringa leaf extract. The results of the study indicate a significant relationship between blood sugar levels and sperm morphology in alloxan-induced white rats after the administration of moringa leaf extract. Moringa oleifera has the potential to be a therapeutic intervention to improve sperm quality and control blood sugar levels in hyperglycemic conditions.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to investigate the relationship between duration of mechanical ventilator use, patient age, and bacterial patterns with the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in the ICU room at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto. This study used an analytical observational approach involving 97 patients as respondent who were using mechanical ventilators in the ICU. Data analysis shows that there is a significant relationship between the length of use of a mechanical ventilator and the incidence of VAP. The longer the patient uses a mechanical ventilator, the higher the risk of VAP. In addition, patient age also has a significant relationship with the incidence of VAP, where older patients have a higher risk of VAP. The pattern of bacteria detected also influences the incidence of VAP, with the type of bacteria involved in the infection influencing the risk of VAP. Based on these findings, several suggestions can be proposed to improve the management and prevention of VAP. Among them are the implementation of strict hygiene protocols, increasing education and training of medical personnel, more intensive patient monitoring and supervision, proper identification and management of bacterial infections, and the need for further research with better designs. In conclusion, this study contributes to the understanding of factors associated with the incidence of VAP and may serve as a basis for better prevention and management efforts in reducing the incidence of VAP in the intensive care setting. However, further research is needed to validate these findings and develop more effective prevention strategies.
