Abstract

Abstract. Investigating women's language features in novels offers insights into their portrayal in fiction. The purpose of this study is to investigate language features by the female main character in the novel The Poppy War by R.F Kuang. This study used Lakoff’s (1975) theory to analyze the dialogues used by the main character. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research design to collect and analyze data. The results of this study suggest that the main character mainly used hedges, tag question, rising intonation, intensifier, hypercorrect grammar, super-polite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress as the language features. However, the results indicate the lack of use precise color terms and empty adjectives in the dialogues used by the main character of R.F Kuang’s The Poppy War. This study concludes that the dominant use of hedges and fillers suggests the main female character often mitigates her statements, reflecting uncertainty. In contrast, the lack of use of empty adjectives and precise color terms indicate that the female main character tends to focus on actions or strategies instead of showing emotional descriptions or visual details in their language features. The findings of this study indicate the perceptions of modern people to women from ancient era, adding to the insights to language features used by women. These findings can be valuable for both teachers and researchers who analyze the women’s language features in fiction.Keywords: Women Language Features, Fiction, Sociolinguistics

Abstract

Among the teaching practitioners in Indonesia, there is a general belief that some learners of English in some Indonesian pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) have a negative view on English, which consequently affects their motivation. However, it remains unclear what has affected the trend. The current study investigates this issue in three pesantren schools in Indonesia affiliated with different Islamic groups. Using the L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) model proposed by Dörnyei (2009) as an analytical lens, a survey instrument was designed to describe and compare students’ motivation to learn English (n = 376). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was run to describe and compare the students’ motivation, and a stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to discover which motivational factors made the most significant contribution to motivation by predicting reported learning effort in English.  In addition, a thorough document analysis was performed to obtain background information regarding the teaching of English in the three institutions. It was found that institutional factors do play a role in influencing the learners’ motivation, in that in the most religiously conservative context, the school policy does shape the learners’ ideal L2 self. As the learners’ ideal L2 self was weak, it leads to weak motivational power as well. The paper concludes by emphasizing the crucial role of educational contexts in shaping students’ ideal selves and in providing favourable learning experience, which are key elements in motivating learners to learn English.

Abstract

The implementation of Indonesia’s Kurikulum Merdeka aims to transform education through student-centered learning and digital technology integration. However, this study reveals significant challenges that hinder its success. Drawing on recent surveys, case examples, and literature, the findings highlight how economic and infrastructural barriers marginalize both teachers and students, limiting access to essential digital tools and reliable internet. Moreover, while digital technologies offer promising educational affordances, their use also introduces distractions that can undermine learning outcomes. These tensions expose a gap between the curriculum’s visionary goals and the practical realities faced in diverse educational contexts. The study underscores the urgent need for targeted policy interventions to improve digital equity, support teachers, and develop strategies to manage technology use effectively. Implications for curriculum design and recommendations for future research on digital inclusion and distraction management are discussed to guide the evolution of Kurikulum Merdeka towards a more equitable and effective education system.

Abstract

Demotivation factors of ESP students need to be analyzed so that teachers and researchers can provide better approaches to teach them, especially during trying times such as Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, the present study aims to analyze demotivation factors of a group of ESP learners during Covid-19 pandemic. In order to obtain its data, the present study applies a sequential explanatory method. A set of questionnaires were distributed to 48 respondents and semi-structured interviews were conducted to five respondents. The results show that the most salient factors which demotivate the respondents are teachers’ competence and teaching styles as well as inadequate school facilities. On the other hand, lack of intrinsic motivation is shown to be the least salient demotivation factor. The results of present study suggest that the respondents seemed to be demotivated because teaching styles and learning materials are perceived as unsuitable for their needs to improve their English skills and future careers as engineers. In addition, online learning was perceived by the respondents as less ideals to teach English despite their intrinsic motivation to learn English for their personal as well as career gains in the future. Possible solutions are also discussed in the present study. HIGHLIGHTS: Lack of intrinsic motivation is seen as the least demotivating factor. Demotivation factors among ESP learners need to be investigated because they would provide more information to improve learners’ motivation. The present study shows unsuitable teaching styles and materials can lead to students’ demotivation. Conducting needs analysis seems imperative to provide a better teaching approach as well as materials for ESP students.

Abstract

As mixed-method approach has gained renewed interests of researchers, a review toward the use of mixed-method to investigate EFL learners’ motivation will contribute as a help for future researchers. The present paper attempts to provide a systematic review by synthesizing research articles related to EFL learners’ motivation which used mixed-methods as their research approach. After screening 3,092 research articles on the aforementioned topic, 16 research articles were included into a final systematic map for analysis. An in-depth review shows that questionnaires and sequential explanatory approach are mostly used by the researchers to investigate EFL learners’ motivation. Although selected studies were performed in different countries with diverse theoretical backgrounds, the majority of studies were directed toward university students, resulting in lack of studies on younger EFL learners. The implications for future studies are also discussed for the consideration of researchers in the near future.

Abstract

Investigating demotivating factors can help teachers to avoid them and provide more insights on sustaining learners’ interest in FL learning. The present study aimed to analyse demotivating factors in FL learning. To obtain the findings, the present study applied a mixed method approach. A set of questionnaires adapted from Sakai and Kikuchi’s (2009) questionnaires were distributed to thirty eight university students whereas interviews were conducted to three of them. The findings indicated teacher’s competence and lack of intrinsic motivation as the most salient factors that caused demotivation among the participants. In this consideration, teachers were perceived as incompetent by the participants when teachers have poor English pronunciation and do not provide communicative classrooms. On the other hand, lack of intrinsic motivation was indicated by the loss of students’ interest in learning and their goal to be an English speaker. Providing a communicative classroom with a fluent teacher as well as promoting students’ interest in English language and culture seem to be the solutions to reduce students’ demotivation. [Penelitian tentang faktor-faktor yang menurunkan motifasi (demotivation) dapat membantu para guru untuk menghindari factor-faktor tersebut dan memberikan wawasan untuk mempertahankan minat peserta didik dalam pembelajaran bahasa asing. Penelitian ini menganalisis faktor demotivasi dalam pembelajaran Bahasa asing. Untuk memperoleh jawaban dari beberapa pertanyaan, penelitian ini menerapkan pendekatan metode campuran. Seperangkat kuesioner yang diadaptasi dari model Sakai dan Kikuchi (2009) didistribusikan kepada tiga puluh delapan mahasiswa sedangkan wawancara dilakukan terhadap tiga dari mahasiswa tersebut. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kompetensi guru dan kurangnya motivasi intrinsik merupakan faktor yang paling menonjol yang menyebabkan demotivasi di antara para peserta. Dalam hal ini, guru dianggap tidak kompeten oleh para peserta ketika guru memiliki pelafalan bahasa Inggris yang buruk dan tidak menyediakan ruang kelas yang komunikatif. Di sisi lain, kurangnya motivasi intrinsik ditunjukkan oleh hilangnya minat siswa dalam belajar dan tujuan mereka untuk berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris. Menyediakan ruang kelas yang komunikatif dengan guru yang fasih serta mempromosikan minat siswa dalam bahasa dan budaya Inggris tampaknya menjadi solusi untuk mengurangi demotivasi siswa]

Abstract

Motivation can be considered as one of influential factors in foreign language (FL) learning as it helps to sustain learner’s interest during long and tedious learning process of FL. According to Deci and Ryan (2000), motivation can be categorized into two types; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The present study aims to investigate intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors of a group of university students in an urban area to learn English. The present study applied a mixed method approach by administering a set of questionnaires and interviews. In addition to a relatively high level of motivation among the participants, the findings of present study show an interest in English language skills and positive attitudes to native speakers of English, English speaking countries, and English learning as intrinsic motivational factors to learn English. On the other hand, the chances of getting better jobs and personal development as extrinsic factors which motivate students to learn English. The present study recommends English teachers as well as educational institutions to provide teaching and learning materials which suited to improve students’ motivation.

Abstract

Translating traditional cuisine terms from the source language to the target language needs to be conducted appropriately to avoid the loss of meaning. In this sense, comprehending the procedures used to translate traditional cuisine terms can provide more insights for translators and educators in the translation field. Hence, the current research examined the procedures used in translating a set of Indonesian traditional food terms into English. This study used a qualitative descriptive research design with an emphasis on cultural analysis. The present study applied Newmark's typology of translation procedures to analyze a series of translated texts of Indonesian traditional food on a website. The results suggest that seven translation procedures (descriptive equivalent, literal translation, expansion, functional equivalent, cultural equivalent, and couplets) were used to translate the data. Furthermore, the results imply that the use of translation procedures as well as the translator’s ideology have a significant impact on the translation results. In addition, it is significant for a translator to know the cultures of the target language and the source language to render appropriate translation results that can be understood by the intended readers. Besides that, it seems important for researchers to investigate the reasons behind the translators’ preferences in choosing certain procedures to develop translation texts in the target language.

Abstract

Kemampuan berkomunikasi dengan baik dalam bahasa Inggris sangat dibutuhkan karena akan membantu masyarakat untuk bertahan di era globalisasi. Itulah sebabnya pelatihan berbicara di depan umum dan TOEFL ITP dapat membantu orang-orang dengan memberikan mereka pengetahuan dan praktik yang dibutuhkan dan motivasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan program pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan oleh tim dari FKSB (Fakultas Komunikasi Sastra dan Bahasa) Universitas Islam 45 Bekasi. Selain memaparkan program, penelitian kali ini menampilkan hasil program yang dilakukan di salah satu lembaga pendidikan di Bekasi, Pesantren Motivasi Indonesia. Acara terdiri dari pengenalan dan teknik public speaking dan TOEFL ITP. Selain itu, ada sesi latihan bagi para peserta. Program ini diharapkan menjadi tonggak untuk program serupa yang akan membantu peningkatan keterampilan berbicara di depan umum dan bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Penggunaan bahasa Inggris untuk pariwisata dapat menarik turis mancanegara untuk mengunjungi sebuah tempat. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan dalam berbahasa Inggris komunitas penggiat pariwisata di Kampung Adat Kranggan. Kegiatan ini berjudul English for Tourism dan dilakukan di kantor Kelurahan Jati Rangga. 20 peserta hadir dalam kegiatan ini yang terdiri dari warga sipil, PNS, dan berbagai elemen masyarakat yang ingin meningkatkan kualitas wisata di daerah Jati Rangga. Kegiatan ini terdiri dari tiga tahap. Tahapan pertama, para peserta diberikan presentasi mengenai kegunaan bahasa Inggris untuk membantu komunikasi dengan turis mancanegara. Tahapan kedua, para peserta diberikan presentasi mengenai frase-frase yang diperlukan ketika menggunakan bahasa Inggris untuk pariwisata. Tahapan ketiga, para peserta berlatih menggunakan frase-frase yang baru diajarkan dengan satu sama lain. Tahapan terakhir dipantau oleh pemateri untuk melihat penggunaan bahasa Inggris para peserta. Melalui survei yang dilakukan, mayoritas peserta memiliki pendapat yang positif mengenai kegiatan ini. Selain itu, materi yang diberikan juga dianggap sesuai. Namun, para peserta berharap kegiatan ini dapat dilakukan lebih sering sehingga mereka bisa menggunakan bahasa Inggris kepada turis mancanegara dengan lebih baik. ABSTRACTThe use of English for tourism can attract tourists from different countries to visit a place. The present event aims to improve the English skills of a group of participants to communicate in English. The present event is titled English for Tourism and was conducted in a district office of Jati Rangga. The present event was attended by 20 participants. They consist of various stakeholders from people, civil servants, and different elements of society which are eager to improve the condition of tourism in Jati Rangga. There are three stages in order to conduct this research. The objectives of the first stage is to present the benefits of English toward tourism as it allows people to communicate with tourist from abroad. In the second stage, the participants were given a presentation about phrases that can be used to communicate with tourists. The last stage was practicing the phrases recently taught. This stage was monitored by the presenter. According to the survey held in the end of the event, most of the participants had positive perceptions toward the event. Nevertheless, the participants hoped for further events that can be held more often so that they can use English for tourism fluently.
