Abstract

Background: Many studies have examined the impact of empowerment on maternal health outcomes, yet few have addressed the specific contexts through which empowerment influences health outcomes. This study aimed to explore the contexts in which empowerment affects maternal health status.Method: This literature review used studies from PubMed and Semantic Scholar databases. Articles were included if published within the last five years and provided free full-text access. Exclusion criteria included studies deemed irrelevant. All included articles were thoroughly reviewed. A total of 13 articles were identified and reviewed.Result: The findings revealed that women's empowerment influences maternal health through various pathways. Financial empowerment, including control over household expenditures and access to income, along with social empowerment—characterized by mobility, decision-making autonomy, access to communication tools, and rejection of spousal violence—was associated with increased antenatal care (ANC) visits, greater utilization of skilled birth attendants (SBAs), and a higher likelihood of delivering in healthcare facilities. In turn, it impacts maternal health status, as they are associated with reduced risk of complications. Furthermore, cultural and structural barriers, such as patriarchal norms and gender-based restrictions, were identified as challenges to empowerment.

Abstract

One of the key factors influencing infant health is successful breastfeeding. A mother's perception of self-efficacy plays a crucial role in breastfeeding success, highlighting the need for appropriate breastfeeding education. The limited number of studies that comprehensively evaluate the impact of breastfeeding education on maternal self-efficacy and breastfeeding success prompted this study. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of breastfeeding education in improving both aspects. A scoping review design was employed, using a descriptive analytical approach. Articles utilized were randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Relevant articles were searched using keywords in 4 online databases with inclusion criteria, resulting in 15 articles as the reference sources for this study. Overall, 15 articles stated that breastfeeding education can have positive impacts on both mothers and infants. Three themes were identified regarding the effectiveness of breastfeeding education: sources of breastfeeding education and support (researchers, midwives/healthcare providers, community), educational media (technology, booklets, peer groups), and the impacts of breastfeeding education (self-efficacy, frequency of breastfeeding problems, breastfeeding success). Education is not only provided offline but can also be delivered online by leveraging technological advancements. The effectiveness of breastfeeding education is not only determined by the content delivered but also by the sources of education and the use of educational media, thus potentially leading to increased maternal self-efficacy and breastfeeding success.

Abstract

The Citarum watershed is a source of livelihood for communities in 13 cities and regencies in West Java and Jakarta. However, the Citarum River is considered one of the most polluted rivers in the world, prompting the central and local governments to implement conservation programs. For Tarumajaya Village, the conservation of the Citarum watershed starts from the Situ Cisanti area accompanied by the development of a tourism village to support the Citarum Harum Program. However, the existing participation is only seen from the government side, and there is no significant community participation in terms of communication and others directly in the process of developing this tourism village. Thus, this study aims to identify community involvement in the development of tourism villages to support the restoration of the Citarum watershed in the Upper Citarum Region. This qualitative study was conducted in Tarumajaya Village, Kertasari Sub-district, Bandung Regency. Primary data were obtained through non-participant observation and in-depth interviews, while secondary data were obtained from policy documents. Data analysis included data reduction, presentation, verification, and conclusion drawing. The research findings show that the development of creative tourism villages in Tarumajaya Village is carried out to support environmental preservation and has economic value for the welfare of the community, thus supporting public health. Tarumajaya Village community innovation products have economic value in tourism and show community involvement in supporting sustainable tourism development which is expected to improve public health.

Abstract

Background: Maternal mental health challenges, particularly depression and anxiety, are significantly associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and postpartum depression. However, the role of psychosocial factors in alleviating these risks remains poorly understood. These concerns are often overlooked during prenatal care, especially in low-resource settings. Objective: This scoping review seeks to examine the influence of maternal mental health disorders on pregnancy outcomes and to identify psychosocial factors that may mitigate associated risks. Methods: A scoping review was conducted utilizing databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. Fifteen studies were selected from an initial pool of 831 publications published between 2019 and 2024, according to the established inclusion criteria. Results: Our review demonstrates a significant correlation between maternal depression and anxiety and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight, and cesarean delivery. Psychosocial factors, such as partner support and stress-coping strategies, significantly mitigate these risks. Timely identification and thorough prenatal mental health therapies are essential for improving long-term outcomes for mothers and infants. Conclusion: Maternal mental health profoundly affects pregnancy outcomes. Incorporating mental health assessments and psychosocial support into standard prenatal care is crucial for mitigating negative effects. Future research should concentrate on creating scalable therapies customized for various populations and providing ongoing care during the perinatal period. Keywords: maternal mental health; pregnancy outcomes; antenatal depression; antenatal anxiety

Abstract

Adolescent unwanted pregnancies can adversely affect individuals both physically and psychologically.  This study seeks to discover factors influencing the incidence of unintended pregnancies among adolescents during the past five years.  The research employed a scoping review methodology using the six-stage approach established by Arskey and O'Malley, utilising article searches in the Garuda, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases.  The inclusion criteria encompassed works from quantitative or qualitative research addressing the determinants of premarital pregnancy among teenagers aged 10–19 years, published in Indonesian or English between 2020 and 2024.  The review identified nine articles from South America, East Africa, South Africa, and Indonesia.  Seven primary factors contribute to unwanted pregnancies among adolescents: promiscuity, insufficient parental supervision, ignorance regarding the risks of premarital sex, the impact of pornography, sexual and emotional violence or abuse, childhood experiences of physical violence, and economic difficulties.  Many adolescent females acknowledged that a discordant connection with their parents or surroundings served as a catalyst for stress, prompting them to seek solace through premarital sexual activity.  Consequently, the role of parents is crucial in providing a secure and nurturing environment for children's cognitive and emotional development.  Additional research is required to investigate adolescents' expectations regarding parental involvement in the prevention of unintended pregnancies.

Abstract

Background: The role of fathers in childcare is increasingly recognized as essential to promoting family well-being, particularly through the provision of paternity leave policies that enable fathers to participate actively in caregiving during the early stages of a child's life. Empirical evidence suggests that paternal involvement has significant positive impacts on maternal health and child development. However, the implementation and effectiveness of paternity leave policies remain inconsistent across countries, with many failing to utilize them optimally to support familial health. Objective: This systematic review aims to evaluate the impact of paternity leave on maternal and child health by synthesizing findings from recent quantitative studies on policy implementation. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, EBSCOhost, and SpringerLink, targeting articles published between 2019 and 2024. Eligible studies included quantitative analyses assessing the effects of paternity leave on health outcomes among fathers, mothers, and children. Studies focusing solely on maternity leave or lacking relevant health outcomes were excluded. Two independent reviewers assessed the quality and relevance of the selected studies. Results: Of 712 articles identified, 15 met the inclusion criteria. Findings consistently showed that paternity leave was associated with reduced postpartum depression, prolonged breastfeeding duration, and improved child health outcomes, although variations in policy structure and implementation were noted. Conclusion: Paternity leave significantly contributes to maternal mental health, supports breastfeeding practices, and enhances child development. These findings underscore the necessity for more equitable and standardized paternity leave policies to support family health. Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding involves providing only breast milk to infants from birth to six months. Globally, 48% of infants were exclusively breastfed in 2023, with Indonesia reporting 68.6% for infants aged 0-5 months. The husband's support plays a crucial role in exclusive breastfeeding success through emotional, informational, instrumental, and evaluative support which enhance maternal comfort and extend breastfeeding duration. This study investigates the impact of spousal support on exclusive breastfeeding for infants (0–6 months). Methods: A literature review was conducted with twenty articles sourced from Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and Garuda databases. Results: The review identified that affective support, such as empathy, motivation, and encouragement, was reported in 75% of studies and strongly correlated with maternal confidence and reduced breastfeeding fatigue. Informational support such as guidance on latching techniques or resolving milk supply issues, was present in 50% of studies and was particularly impactful for primiparous mothers. Instrumental support, found in 70% of studies, included household assistance and infant care and was associated with reduced maternal stress and sustained breastfeeding. Appraisal support was also noted but less frequently emphasized. Conclusion: Emotional, informational, and instrumental support from husbands plays a pivotal role in sustaining exclusive breastfeeding. Interventions should prioritize father-inclusive education and engagement strategies to improve breastfeeding outcomes. Policymakers and healthcare providers must actively integrate paternal support components into maternal-child health programs

Abstract

Penilaian kualitas artikel dilakukan menggunakan instrumen SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles).Hasil menunjukkan bahwa asam azelat, klindamisin topikal, eritromisin topikal, benzoil peroksida, dan niasinamida umumnya aman digunakan selama kehamilan.

Abstract

Anemia is a global health issue affecting various age groups, including teenagers. This systematic review aims to identify the causes and treatments of anemia in adolescents. Using the Systematic Literature Review method, data were sourced from four databases: PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and SCOPUS. The literature search employed the keywords "Risk factor" AND "Anemia" AND "Adolescence," conducted comprehensively via the Publish or Perish (POP) search engine. Articles were selected based on inclusion criteria, covering publications from the last three years (2021-2023). Eligibility was assessed using the PICOS framework, and duplications were filtered using the Covidence application. Articles unrelated to the research problem were excluded after screening titles and abstracts. The VOSviewer application was utilized for thematic mapping. The study selection followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Based on 18 selected articles, data was obtained on factors influencing anemia among adolescents such as inadequacy of nutrient intake (N=5 studies) such as protein, iron, and Vitamin A Nutritional status (N=3 studies), dietary patterns (N=2 studies), menstruation (N=2 studies), and hemoglobinopathies (N=1 study) are translated into English. Indirect risk factors associated with anemia among adolescents are found to be: Adolescent females (N=10 studies), Knowledge (N=6 studies), low socioeconomic status (N=3 studies), Education (N=2 studies), Demographics (2 studies), Shared toilet usage (1 study). The study concludes that young women are more susceptible to anemia than young men, with nutritional intake, knowledge, nutritional status, and diet being the primary risk factors. Addressing direct and indirect causes is crucial for effectively managing adolescent anemia.
