Abstract

This research aims at identifying the American English accents produced by the Americans. The American phonation was taken from Thomas’ book, An Introduction to the Phonetics of American English. This qualitative research took the data from the English speeches spoken by the famous Americans on YouTube. This research applied the observational method to collect the data, and a phonological approach, identity method, and articulatory phonetic identification to analyze the data. It is identified that the Americans have true [t], flap [t]. held [t], and vanishing [t]. The dark [l] and the light [l] are also articulated. The Americans pronounce the bunched [ɹ] and R-colored vowels, and they drop the final [r]. The article a is pronounced as /e/, /ɒ/ is pronounced as /ɑ:/, and /ɑ:/ is pronounced as /æ/. The letter <o> is pronounced as [oʊ].

Abstract

Social media sites like Instagram, let people communicate worldwide, share ideas and opinions, and keep up with current affairs, have become an essential part of people’s everyday life in the current digital era. However, with the increasing use of Instagram, there has been a noticeable rise in impoliteness and incivility in online communication as the anonymity that social media provides has emboldened individuals to express opinions that they might not typically voice in person encounters. This study aims to analyze the impoliteness strategies used by netizen on account tasyiiathasyia’s posting on Instagram. The design of this study is qualitative method. This study used observational method and non-participatory technique. The data was obtained on Instagram from tweets written by netizens then collected and analyzed by using Culpeper Theory (1996). The results, there are five impoliteness that discussed in this study, there are 2 data that related to bald on record impoliteness, 3 data positive impoliteness, 1 data negative impoliteness, 4 data sarcasm or mock impoliteness and no data related to withhold politeness.

Abstract

Tujuan dari pelatihan ini tidak lain untuk membantu siswa SMA dalam memahami tip – tip atau strategi dan langkah-langkah dalam mendapatkan beasiswa untuk melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang perguruan tinggi, baik di dalam maupun luar negeri. Melalui pendekatan yang komprehensif, pelatihan ini akan membekali peserta dengan kemampuan mencari informasi beasiswa, menyusun dokumen aplikasi seperti CV, esai motivasi, dan surat rekomendasi, serta mempersiapkan diri menghadapi wawancara. Selain itu, siswa juga akan diajarkan cara memanfaatkan teknologi digital untuk mengakses peluang beasiswa yang sesuai dengan minat dan bakat mereka. Output dari pelatihan ini meliputi dokumen aplikasi yang siap digunakan, peningkatan keterampilan komunikasi untuk wawancara, serta rencana aksi yang jelas untuk mencari dan mendaftar beasiswa. Pelatihan ini tidak hanya meningkatkan literasi akademik, digital, dan sosial siswa, tetapi juga mendorong mereka untuk lebih percaya diri dan optimis dalam meraih pendidikan yang lebih tinggi. Dengan adanya simulasi dan bimbingan langsung, pelatihan ini memberikan pengalaman praktis yang relevan, sehingga siswa dapat memaksimalkan peluang mendapatkan beasiswa. Selain itu, Bahasa inggris juga sangat dituntut untuk mendapatkan beasiswa sebagai salah satu syarat. Oleh sebab itu dari tim pengabdi yang terdiri dri jurusan Sastra Inggris, Manajemen dan Ilmu Administrasi saling berkolaborasi dalam pemberian knowledge sesuai bidangnya. Hasil dari pelatihan ini adalah peserta memperoleh pemahaman yang mendalam tentang berbagai jenis beasiswa dan proses aplikasinya, serta keterampilan dalam menyusun dokumen aplikasi seperti CV, esai motivasi, dan surat rekomendasi. Peserta juga siap menghadapi wawancara beasiswa dengan lebih percaya diri berkat simulasi yang dilakukan. Selain itu, mereka memiliki rencana aksi konkret untuk mencari dan mendaftar beasiswa, serta meningkatkan literasi digital dalam mencari informasi beasiswa melalui platform online. Secara keseluruhan, pelatihan ini membantu peserta mempersiapkan diri secara matang untuk meraih peluang pendidikan lebih tinggi melalui beasiswa.

Abstract

Community services within the scope of sub-district apparatus duties at the sub-district office are starting to be reformed. From citizenship services to empowerment. And this requires work ability, work commitment, or supportive work culture conditions. This is the subject of this research, taking a case at the Peulimbang District Head's office, Bireuen Regency. The research was carried out in an associative descriptive manner, with a sample of 96 people who came to write a letter of recommendation for making KTPs, Family Cards, etc. at the Peulimbang District Head Office, Bireuen Regency. As a result of the research, information was obtained that the public's perception of the ability aspect of Plimbang sub-district office employees was good (88%), work commitment aspects reached 73.4% and work culture 80.05%. With the path analysis model approach, it is proven that there is a direct and indirect influence on work ability, organizational commitment and work culture, respectively 56.53%, 55.15% and 51.29% on the quality of community services. Simultaneously work ability, work commitment and work culture contribute to service quality by 70.8%

Abstract

Morphology is a field of science that investigates and studies basic forms in language, such as morphemes, the formation of affixes, words, and others. The purpose of this research is to find and identify the types of word formation in posts and comments on Mark Zuckerberg's Instagram account. This paper used theories from Yule (2020) to analyze the word-formation process. This study used the qualitative method to explain the data using sentences. In collecting data, this research used the observation method and note-taking techniques. The results of this study found 235 raw data points classified into types of word-formation processes. This research analyzed five types of word formation: acronym, derivation, compounding, coinage, and clipping. The types found along with the frequency of appearance are: acronym was found 24 times, derivation appeared 129 times, compounding 30 times, coinage 42 times, and clipping 10 times. The explanation provided above indicates that the most popular way for people to form new words and increase their vocabulary is by derivation, a sort of word construction that is extensively employed. Furthermore, the least common type is clipping in the data source of this study. The reason for this is that certain Instagram users who leave comments on Zuckerberg's posts rarely condense lengthy phrases into shorter ones.

Abstract

Pragmatics explores the relationship between language and the users of language. Deixis concerns with the use of expression within some utterances to refer to some portion that contains the utterance. The objective of this study is to identify the types of deixis in a podcast Zach sang show YouTube channel. This research was used qualitative methods. The data analysis was performed by categorizing data based on the theory from Levinson  (1997) that include person deixis, time deixis, place deixis , discourse deixis and social deixis. There are 1.167 raw data items. However, the researchers analyzed eighteen data based on the types of deixis.  The use of person deixis contained six data, four data contained time deixis, two data contained discourse, and two data contained social deixis for the result of this research. Person deixis is dominant than the other types. Meanwhile, social deixis appeared less frequently because the context is not widely used in that context. This suggests a significant focus on individual references, highlighting the crucial role of personal connections in shaping the podcast’s discourse.

Abstract

This research is entitled as An Analysis of Unit Shift and Structure Shift Found in a Little Princess Novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The purpose of this research is to analyze the types of unit shift and structure shift. The theory used in this research based on translation shift theory by Catford (1965). The method is qualitative descriptive. And the method of collecting data is used documentation. Some steps in documentation. They are read the novel, observed the translation word by word, sentence by sentence and search the data. The researcher search the unit shift and structure shift, sort the unit shift and structure shift in draft of data then, classify between unit shift and structure shift. This research used words in describing the result. The result of this research are 51 items data. In unit shift, phrase into word are 10 data, word into clause are 5 data, word into sentence is 1 data, phrase into sentence are 2 data, phrase into clause are 8 data. And structure shift, simple sentence are 10 data, compound sentence are 5 data, complex sentence are 7 data, complex compound sentence are 3 data. The conclusion are unit shift can changed one word meaning as source language to phrase as target language, also unit shift changed clause in source language to sentence in target language. And structure shift can used “and, also, whatever, for combine dependent clause and independent clause.

Abstract

It is a common phenomenon for people in using pragmatics in their daily communication. People tend to express themselves implicitly with intention which is discussed in illocutionary acts. The intention are such as commanding, informing, expressing themselves and so on. Illocutionary acts that was developed by Searle (1976) has five types, representative/(assertive), directive, commissive, expressive and declaration. One of the types that often be used is directive which is classified into few classes such as command, beg, advise and request. This research was aimed to analyzed the classes and the frequency of directive speech acts that are uttered by the characters in”Cinderella” movie. This research was analyzed by applying descriptive qualitative method which is explained in words, phrases and sentences. The data will be collected from the characters’ utterance in “Cinderella” movie. The researcher used observational method, non-participatory and note taking technique method in collecting the data. The result of this research showed that the characters in “Cinderella” movie used all classes of directive speech acts. The most frequently used is command which had 36 data (69,2%) meanwhile the least used is request which had only 1 data (1,9%).

Abstract

Communication is a form of verbal use that people talk about one another. The purpose of communication is to provide information to others. Communication is fundamental, so people need to communicate with others. A well interaction requires the fundamental of politeness to unite communication methods and will provide information to others. Using politeness, can make the interaction avoid ambiguity and will give a good response between the speaker and the listener. But in this research, the researcher will only focus on one of the strategies which is called as Seeking Agreement. The method that the researcher has been using in this research is descriptive qualitative method which is explain by word, sentences or even phrases. The researcher uses observational method and non-participatory as a method in collecting the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses pragmatics identity method. The result findings show that there are 15 data found from the character’s utterances that contain an agreement from the speaker and hearer

Abstract

This research is an application of Freud’s psychoanalysis theory into the novel “The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The aim of the research is to find out the dominant id of the antagonist character named Stapleton and to reveal the cause of this character in threatening the Baskervilles family. The researcher uses psychological approach by Sigmund Freud or the theory of id, ego and superego. The researcher analyses and gives explanation about the dominant id of Stapleton character and reveals the motif of the character in threatening the Baskervilles. The researcher conducts a qualitative research. The data are obtained in the form of quotations from the novel “The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The method of collecting data used is document study. The researcher uses content analysis as the method of analyzing data. The data are presented qualitatively and descriptively. The finding of the research shows that the id of Stapleton character is dominant because everything that Stapleton had done was only to fulfil his bad desire, his terrible wish captured the evidence that the id of this character was dominant and the motif of this character in threatening the Baskervilles is to obtain the riches and valuable estate of the Baskervilles.
