Abstract

This training was conducted at SMKS Gurindam Boarding School with the aim of enhancing students' reading comprehension skills through the implementation of the Schema Activation Strategy, supported by the integration of Morphological Awareness and Vocabulary Knowledge. The program was designed in response to the students' observed difficulties in understanding English texts, especially in identifying implicit information. The training included interactive sessions such as lectures, discussions, practical simulations, and assessments. Initially, students were introduced to the basic concepts of schema theory, word structure, and morphemes, followed by exercises connecting their prior knowledge to new information in reading texts. The integration of morphological understanding and vocabulary awareness allowed students to decode words and comprehend contextual meaning more effectively. The students demonstrated high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the sessions, indicating the relevance and effectiveness of the applied methods. Teachers also played a vital role in facilitating student engagement and ensuring the sustainability of the strategies introduced. Overall, based on the training activity and student’s score the program succeeded in fostering critical and analytical reading skills, equipping students with the tools necessary for long-term academic literacy development. This initiative highlights the importance of using targeted instructional strategies to address learning challenges and improve English literacy among vocational high school students.

Abstract

Mastering English for teachers can increase their competency in this digital era. Teachers who speak English achieve their selling point in communication, gain access to global references and the latest educational technology, and broaden their professional mindsets. This training trained the participants to understand non-native speakers of English, and speak English like non-native speakers by providing connected speech which contains linking, assimilation, elision, silent letters, and intrusive [j] dan [w] as the topic. This training, which 55 teachers attended, was held at SMAN 16 Batam on 17, 23, and 31 January 2025. This training applied a service-learning method with models of lectures, discussions, and practice. The results showed an increase in ability of 71%, when initially only two participants could pronounce them before training. The planned and sustainable programmes will provide successful English language training. Having the ability to speak English is not only useful for teachers but also for the school and the students being taught.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of service quality and price on customer satisfaction of the GoFood service on the Gojek application among university students in Pontianak City. This research employs a quantitative approach using an associative method. The study involved a sample of 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The instrument testing techniques used in this research include validity tests, reliability tests, classical assumption tests (normality test, linearity test, and multicollinearity test), and hypothesis testing which consists of multiple linear regression analysis, correlation coefficient test, coefficient of determination test, simultaneous test (F-test), and partial test (t-test). Based on the results of the multiple linear regression analysis, the regression equation is obtained as follows: Y = 1.042 + 0.438 X₁ + 0.254 X₂. The correlation coefficient result is 0.738, indicating that the relationship between service quality and price variables on customer satisfaction falls into the strong category. The coefficient of determination shows a value of 0.544, meaning that 54.4% of customer satisfaction is influenced by service quality and price, while the remaining 45.6% is influenced by other variables not examined in this study. The results of the simultaneous test indicate that both service quality and price variables simultaneously have a significant effect on customer satisfaction of GoFood users on the Gojek application among university students in Pontianak City. The partial test results show that service quality has a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction, and the price variable also has a positive and significant effect on the customer satisfaction of GoFood users on the Gojek application among university students in Pontianak City.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in spoken discourse by analyzing Rosé’s utterances during her interview on the i-D YouTube channel. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research identifies how the four conversational maxims—quantity, quality, relation, and manner—are manifested in her responses. The data are obtained through non-participatory observation and note-taking and analyzed using a pragmatic identity method. A total of 22 utterances were identified, with the maxims of quantity and relation (36.36%) being the most frequently observed. The findings show that Rosé’s responses largely adhered to the principles of quantity and relevance, reflecting a cooperative communication style. These findings highlight a growing trend in pragmatic research: the context-dependent application of Grice’s maxims in public discourse. Despite these developments, there remains a notable gap in research focusing specifically on K-pop artist interviews within digital platforms such as YouTube. Considering this, the present study contributes to a broader understanding of cooperative communication in media discourse and offers insights into the continued applicability of Gricean theory in analyzing contemporary public interactions.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the journey of the main character, Scarlett, in Caraval by Stephanie Garber using Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey theory. It focuses on identifying the stages present in the novel and how they contribute to Scarlett’s character development. This research applies to Joseph Campbell’s (2020) Hero’s Journey theory. The primary data source is Caraval, a fantasy novel by Stephanie Garber. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, as defined by Litosseliti (2010) and Bogdan & Biklen (2007), which focuses on analyzing textual data in depth. The data collection follows Bowen (2009) library research approach and uses Leavy (2017) highlighting technique to categorize relevant text. The analysis applies Campbell (2020) Hero’s Journey framework and follows (Ratna, 2020) descriptive interpretation method to interpret the narrative structure and character development. The findings show that thirteen out of the seventeen stages of the Hero’s Journey are reflected in Scarlett’s journey, while four stages do not appear in the story. These results indicate that Caraval partially follows the traditional Hero’s Journey structure and demonstrates how this narrative pattern can be adapted in modern fantasy literature with a female character.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of directive speech acts found in the movie Thunderbolt. This descriptive qualitative research focuses on the utterances produced by characters in the film, with direct speech acts serving as the main data source. Data were collected through an observational method using a non-participatory technique. The data analysis applied Sudaryanto’s (2015) method of identifying language elements, while the theoretical framework was based on Searle’s (1979) classification of directive speech acts. The findings show that the characters frequently employed directive speech acts to influence others’ actions. Out of 57 identified utterances, 20 were categorized as asking, 15 as requesting, 5 as ordering, 5 as commanding, 5 as giving advice, 5 as begging, and 2 as inviting. The most dominant type was asking. These speech acts were primarily used to give instructions, request help, and express urgency, especially in high-pressure scenes. This research offers insights into the use of directive speech acts in film dialogues and highlights their relevance to real-world communication and interaction.

Abstract

Gender inequality is the unequal allocation of opportunities and rights, among people of various genders. This commonly works against one gender, typically women. This research aims to analyze Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" with a focus on gender inequality. A qualitative approach was used in this study. This study also used theory from Fakih (2008). The findings indicated that the novel describes five different forms of gender discrimination. The first is subordination, show that Jo cannot do anything she want because of her status as women. Second, stereotypes, when a woman behaves unfavorably or imitates a man, she will be perceived as a bad woman, like what Jo did because she always do the boyish tricks. Third, marginalization, show by Jo character that can be the backbone of his family when their father go to the war. Fourth, burden of work, where the Jo and also her sibling not only work to earn money, they also work at home to clean the house. For the last form, which is violence, it did not happen in the novel. In order to rouse women at the time, gender injustice was brought up in "Little Women," and as a result, the subject came to represent the state of American society at that time. The conversation and utterances of the characters make it clear that the female characters struggle to fit in with society.

Abstract

Politeness is to convey an expression as pleasantly as possible, which is necessary to reduce conflict with others. As a result, being polite is essential because it allows people to express themselves without offending others. The aim of this study is to examine the strategies of politeness utilized in the movie "Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck" based on Brown and Levinson's theory (1987). This study employs a descriptive qualitative design in order to explain the many forms of politeness used by the characters in the film. According to the findings of this study, it found 14 occurrences spanning four categories of politeness strategies as defined by Brown and Levinson (1987). Specifically, the study found 4 cases of positive politeness, 3 instances of negative politeness, 4 instances of bald-on-record strategies, and 3 instances of off-record strategies. The politeness mentioned in the speech is beneficial, considering the film is about a cultural romance in a rural area of Indonesia.
