Abstract

The recent phenomena of moral degradation of Indonesian youth are responded by policy in moral and character education. Character education in schools is included in the curriculum and it must be integrated into the subjects matter. This study aims at investigating how English teachers perceive character education in the context of teaching English as well as the strategies in inserting character education into the lesson by conducting explanatory sequential mixed method design. The participants of this study were seventh and eighth grade English teachers in SMPN 6 Singaraja. The data were collected by means of questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview guide. As the result, this study revealed that English teachers had sufficient knowledge of Character Education concept. The way they implemented the character education did not really represent how character education should be inserted. Furthermore, they also were not sure of its impact to the students’ character development. It indicates that they had lack understanding of character education and the implementation of character education. The way English teachers integrate character education into further learning is discussed in a research discussion. Furthermore, enriching their knowledge of the character education should be the first step done.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This study was aimed at analyzing and describing the authenticity of assessment implementation by teachers in vocational school in Buleleng Regency. The analysis of assessment authenticity in this study was seen from teachers’ assessment planning and assessment implementation as well as how teachers and students perceive the assessment implementation. This study used exploratory method as the design involving 35 vocational English teachers and 35 classes of vocational students in Buleleng Regency. The data was gathered through document study, questionnaire, and interview and analyzed qualitatively. The results tend to point on a sufficient level of teachers’ assessment implementation. Its level was also found to be sufficient based on how teachers and students perceived its implementation. It was because most of the lesson plans designed by the teachers did not include relevant assessments yet to the expectation of the syllabus. The assessment instruments planned such as rubrik, blueprint, and test was found to be less appropriate. Although some assessments seemed to fulfill the criteria of authentic assessment well, inappropriateness of its implementation was still found. It indicated that the assessments implementation did not represent students’ competency yet as required in their real-world life.

Abstract

During teachers' adaptation to online learning, the Covid-19 case has shown a decline indicating that general health conditions are starting to improve. This has encouraged the government to re-implement face-to-face learning while still paying attention to health protocols. During the transition from online to onsite learning, teachers must adjust their strategy, especially the assessment strategy, because onsite learning differs from pre-pandemic onsite learning. Therefore, this research aims to describe the assessment strategies applied by teachers during the transition period. This research is descriptive qualitative research. Researchers used observation sheets, and interviews as instruments, and data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman models. The findings from this study are that teachers use an assessment strategy based on three assessment approaches according to the 2013 curriculum: assessment as learning, assessment for learning, and assessment of learning. However, in this transitional period, teachers are considered to need to improve in applying technology to assessment. Besides that, the strategies used by teachers also tend to be monotonous. The results of this study are expected to be a reflection for teachers in determining the right strategy in the transition from online to onsite learning.

Abstract

Previous studies have revealed that social media (SM) was implemented in EFL (hereafter, EFL) students’ online informal learning of English (OILE). However, the information about learning goals, pros, and cons of doing these activities remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to explore (1) the learning goals of online informal learning of English via SM and (2) the students' perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of using SM to facilitate OILE. This basic qualitative study recruited 14 EFL students at a university in Indonesia to join in semi-structured interviews. The interview results were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings revealed that EFL students engaged in OILE via SM for various goals (mostly for form-focused and meaning-focused goals), focusing on learning and practicing language skills. However, those learning goals primarily focused on form than meaning. In addition, the participants confessed that doing OILE brought advantages to cognitive and affective domains. Unfortunately, the participants also perceived that doing such OILE also brought some disadvantages. From the findings, we offered some implications to advance EFL learning through OILE via SM.
