Abstract

Linear pattern is the primary material in learning number patterns in junior high schools, but there are still many students who fail to generalize the linear pattern. The students’ failure in generalizing the pattern occurred when the students ended to view the problems globally without breaking them into the constructors’ components such as the experience of field-dependent type students. For this reason, this study was carried out to explore the thinking process of students who fail and investigate the thinking processes of students who succeed in generalizing linear patterns. The results of this study provide an effective learning strategy solution for field-dependent students in generalizing linear patterns. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design to junior high school students. The results indicated that students in the field-dependent cognitive style looked at pattern questions represented in the form of geometric images globally without looking at the structure of the image. Two strategies for generalizing linear patterns used by field-dependent students were examined, namely recursive and different strategies.

Abstract

The errors of the first-semester students in solving the angular velocity problem in trigonometry courseAbstractThis qualitative research that used case study approach aimed to describe the errors of the first semester students in solving the angular velocity problem. Seven students of the mathematics education study program at a university in Malang City involved as the research subject. The data collected in this study consisted of the subject’s work on the midterm test which contains angular velocity problems and transcripts of interviews with the subject. Data analysis of the subject’s work was carried out by classifying based on the types of errors. Meanwhile, the transcript analysis of the interview results was carried out by coding the words that indicated the cause of the subject’s error. The results showed that the errors of the first semester students in solving the angular velocity problem consisted of conceptual and principle errors. The conceptual errors were caused by a lack of understanding of angular velocity concept and the factor causing principle errors was the misunderstanding that the linear velocity formula is the same as the angular velocity formula. Therefore, to avoid this error, the learning of angular velocity is suggested to emphasize the understanding of the concept of angular velocity and the difference between the angular and linear velocity formula.

Abstract

Thinking dispositions are also needed so that a student can succeed in learning. The results of the preliminary research indicate that the knowledge of the thinking dispositions of 84 respondents who are teachers and preservice teacher candidates is still in the low category, which is 38.45%. The problem of low knowledge about this thinking disposition is important to overcome. This is because a teacher must understand the disposition of thinking, to be successful in carrying out learning in class. One of the ways that this service is carried out is by holding a national webinar on a philosophical and psychological review of thinking dispositions. Therefore, the purpose of this webinar activity is to increase the knowledge of webinar participants about thinking dispositions. This webinar activity consists of three stages, namely material presentation, question and answer, and evaluation of activities. The results of this service through this webinar showed that there was an increase in participants' knowledge of thinking dispositions by 23.99%, from the very low category (38.45%) to the high category (62.44%). This increase in knowledge also occurs in each material about the disposition of thinking presented in this webinar. In general, it can be said that this webinar was successful in increasing participants' knowledge about thinking dispositions.

Abstract

Patterns generalization learning at the junior high school is more emphasis on the generalization of linear patterns. One problem in generalizing linear patterns is that students do not know the process of using trial and error strategies to generalize linear patterns. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to analyze the thought processes of 2 junior high school students who succeeded in generalizing linear patterns using trial and error strategies. The results show that there are two trial and error strategies that can be used to generalize linear patterns, namely: (1) Trial and error strategy by looking at the relationship of quantity consists of three steps. The first step is called relating, namely, the subject connects between the first term, the term in question, and difference. The second step is called searching, where the subject finds similarities by using addition and subtraction operations to obtain the nth term formula. The third step is called extending; the subject expands the pattern into more general structures by looking at the relationship between quantities. (2) Trial and error strategy by looking at patterns that consist of three steps. The first step is called relating, namely, the subject connects small positive integers by using arithmetic operations to obtain the first term and the second term. The second step is called searching, where the subject finds similarities by finding the formula for the first, second, and third terms. The third step is called extending, where the subject expands the pattern into more general structures by looking at the pattern that applies to the first, second, and third terms.
