Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of regional language backgrounds on the communication styles of students at Gorontalo State University (UNG), as well as to identify adaptation strategies and potential misunderstandings that occur in intercultural interactions on campus. The approach used in this study is qualitative descriptive with a sociolinguistic perspective. Research data were collected through direct observation and interviews with students from diverse regional language backgrounds, including Gorontalo Malay, Suwawa, Bolaang Mongondow, and Javanese. The results indicate a strong unconscious language transfer, both in word choice (such as the use of affixes like “to” and ‘ndo’ or local terms of address like “ana,” “ngana,” and “kita”) and in vocal intonation. Students from Sulawesi tend to use a firm, high-pitched intonation as a sign of openness, while Javanese students tend to speak more softly to uphold the value of politeness (unggah-ungguh). Differences in interpretation and linguistic norms occasionally lead to cross-cultural misunderstandings. Nevertheless, students successfully minimize conflicts and social distance through communicative accommodation, such as the use of Indonesian, adjustment of speech tone, and direct clarification. This study concludes that the UNG campus environment can function as a small-scale multicultural space, where linguistic diversity does not weaken communication but rather strengthens tolerance among students.

Abstract

Language is a crucial element in communication used to express ideas and maintain social relationships. Politeness strategies (Brown & Levinson, 1987) play an essential role in protecting the interlocutor's "face" and avoiding conflict, particularly within university academic environments. (Lakoff, 2004; Holmes, 1995) indicate that women tend to use more polite language compared to men, research exploring gender-based differences in politeness strategies at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo (UNG), This study examines politeness strategies and gender differences among English Department students at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo.  Drawing on Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, the study examines four strategies: bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving ten English Department students, consisting of five male and five female participants from the 2024 and 2025 cohorts. The data were collected through individual online interviews and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings show that positive politeness was the most frequently used strategy, followed by negative politeness and bald on-record strategies, while off-record strategies did not appear in the data. Female participants tended to use more positive and negative politeness strategies, whereas male participants used more direct forms in some situations. However, these differences should be interpreted cautiously because the study involved a small number of participants. The study suggests that politeness in student interaction is shaped not only by gender, but also by context, social distance, and communicative purpose.

Abstract

This study examines dialectal variation and communication strategies among Banggai and Gorontalo students at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews and observations of students’ informal interactions. The findings show that dialectal differences appear in vocabulary choice, pronunciation, particles, forms of address, and intonation. These differences sometimes create misunderstanding, particularly when directness or high intonation is interpreted differently by students from another regional background. However, students also employ several communication strategies, including switching to Indonesian, clarifying meaning, adjusting tone, and using familiar expressions to maintain solidarity. The study suggests that dialectal variation in campus interaction is not merely a linguistic difference, but also a marker of identity, solidarity, and intercultural negotiation.

Abstract

This study looks at how students use formal and casual ways of speaking during their presentations in the classroom. The study aims to recognize the features of formal speaking style and examine how students use informal speaking style during their academic presentations. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and looked at it through a sociolinguistic lens. The information was gathered from a video of a classroom presentation held by second-semester students in the English Education Program. The researcher looked at what students said during their presentation times. This included their opening talks, explaining the materials, asking and answering questions, and interacting with their classmates. The study looked at Martin Joos’ ideas about different ways of speaking, especially paying attention to formal and casual styles. The results indicate that students often used a formal way of speaking at the beginning, while explaining their materials, and when wrapping up their presentations. They did this by using polite phrases, well-structured sentences, and academic words. At the same time, a casual way of talking came up during conversations and interactions with classmates. This included using informal phrases, mixing different languages, and communicating in a laid-back manner. Many things affected how speech styles were used, such as the mood in the classroom, the connection with the audience, the students' confidence, and the subjects they were presenting on. The research also discovered that a relaxed way of speaking helped students feel less anxious, connect better with others, and explain topics more clearly. But using too many casual phrases can lower the academic quality of presentations. So, students should find a good balance between formal and casual ways of speaking when they communicate in school. This research backs up the idea in sociolinguistics that the way we use language varies based on the social situation and the goals of our communication.

Abstract

This study examines the lexical variation between the regional languages of Bolangitang and Sangkub in North Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi. This study aims to identify the differences in vocabulary between the two languages, and analyze the use of these variations in everyday communication, as well as explain the social and geographical factors that influence the emergence of lexical variations. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data was collected through live interviews and online interviews with native speakers from both regions. The research instrument consists of a list of 30 basic vocabulary related to daily life, such as body parts, household activities, food, nature, and greetings. The data collected was analyzed by comparing similarities and differences in vocabulary between the two languages. The results of the study showed several lexical differences in the vocabulary commonly used by the Bolangitang and Sangkub people. Some words were found to have the same shape, while others showed differences in form and pronunciation. This variation is influenced by geographical factors, patterns of social interaction, and local language customs. This study shows that lexical variation is not only a linguistic differentiator, but also reflects the social and cultural identity of the people in North Bolaang Mongondow. Therefore, this research is expected to contribute to the documentation and preservation of regional languages in Indonesia, especially in North Bolaang Mongondow.

Abstract

The Tip of the Tongue (TOT) phenomenon is a condition when someone temporarily cannot recall a word even though they already know it. This phenomenon often occurs in bilingual speakers because two language systems are active at the same time, which can cause difficulties in lexical retrieval during speaking activities. In academic settings, especially oral presentations, students may experience TOT because of nervousness, language interference, and pressure while speaking spontaneously. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of the Tip of the Tongue phenomenon among bilingual students during oral presentations and to identify the strategies they use to overcome lexical retrieval difficulties. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through observation and recording students’ oral presentations. The findings show that TOT frequently appears when students experience high cognitive load and speaking anxiety. To deal with these difficulties, students commonly use strategies such as phonological cues, semantic associations, and code-switching. These findings indicate that bilingual lexical processing plays an important role in students’ speaking performance. This study is expected to provide useful insights for improving students’ fluency and confidence in academic speaking contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the patterns of Indonesian-English code-switching in digital communication among general social media users across four platforms: Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter), and WhatsApp. In contemporary digital environments, bilingual users frequently alternate between languages to communicate and express their identities online. This study aims to identify the structural types of code-switching and explore their communicative motivations. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research analyzed forty linguistic data points collected from social media posts, comments, and chats. Poplack’s (1980) typology was used to classify the structural types of code-switching, while Myers-Scotton’s (1993) Markedness Model was applied to interpret their communicative functions. The findings reveal that intra-sentential switching is the most dominant type (65%), followed by inter-sentential switching (25%) and tag switching (10%). The analysis shows that code-switching functions as a strategy for identity expression, rhetorical emphasis, social connection, and participation in global digital culture. These findings suggest that language alternation is not merely a result of linguistic limitations but a deliberate communicative resource employed by bilingual users in digital interaction.

Abstract

Developmental language disorder (DLD) creates persistent difficulties in language learning, but evidence about its implications for formal EFL education remains fragmented. This systematic literature review with structured narrative synthesis examined English-learning outcomes among school-aged learners with DLD, factors associated with variation in attainment, classroom interventions, and limitations of the available evidence. Searches completed on August 19, 2026 covered ERIC- and PubMed-indexed records and selected publisher platforms, supplemented by backward and forward citation tracking. Peer-reviewed empirical studies published from January 2015 to August 2026 were screened against predefined eligibility criteria. Ten reports met the broader criteria: nine learner-focused studies formed the primary analytical corpus, while one teacher-awareness study provided supplementary contextual evidence. Data were extracted using a structured framework and synthesized narratively across EFL attainment, learner and exposure factors, multilingual and cross-linguistic relationships, and classroom interventions. The findings show that DLD does not preclude EFL learning, but development was often slower or less stable across vocabulary, grammar, word recognition, and narrative production. Outcomes varied with first-language abilities, cross-linguistic similarity, cumulative exposure, affective factors, task demands, and instructional support. Explicit grammar teaching, cognate instruction, multimodal support, repetition, and plurilingual comparison produced promising gains, although transfer to spontaneous communication and long-term retention remained limited. The evidence base was methodologically heterogeneous and concentrated in a small number of European special-education settings. The review therefore supports inclusive EFL provision based on bilingual-informed assessment, differentiated instruction, and stronger teacher preparation while highlighting the need for longitudinal classroom research in more linguistically and geographically diverse contexts.
