Abstract

This research aims to examine the discursive discourse on the American dream in the novel American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. This novel tells the life of Lydia and her son, Luca as immigrants in the United States. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method supported by Stuart Hall’s represnetation theory and belonging theory. The narrative of Mexican immigrants built by Cummins illustrates the ideals of achieving the American dream for a better life in the existing characters. However, the life that is dreamed of does not go completely as it should. Lydia and Luca are trying to achieve their ideal goals as new citizens. However, minority construction is still a hindrance. With the theory of representation and belonging, the depiction of Lydia and Luca’s lives is a process that immigrants should face. The rejection of the majority by the minority is an ongoing negotiation process and is not easy to achieve. Lydia and Luca are representations of Mexican immigrants who still have to negotiate the search for identity in a new community in the United States.

Abstract

ABSTRAK:Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk Mendeskripsikan tentang penggunaan media pembelajaran audio visual dalam keterampilan menulis teks deskripsi siswa serta untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan media pembelajaran audio visual dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks deskripsi siswa kelas VII SMP Pangeran Antasari . Penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang dilaksanakan sebanyak 2 siklus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1). Penerapan media pembelajaran audio visual dalam pembelajaran menulis teks deskripsi siswa Kelas VII SMP Pangeran Antasari, kota Medan dilakukan dalam dua siklus dan mampu menciptakan pembelajaran yang aktif dan menyenangkan. Terjadi peningkatan dalam prose belajar. Siswa terlihat lebih antusias dan aktif bertanya serta berdiskusi. Saat proses penulisan, siswa lebih terfokus pada pekerjaannya. (2). Penerapan media audio visual sangat efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks deskripsi siswa kelas VII SMP-2 Pangeran Antasari, kota Medan. Efektivitas ini dapat dilihat dari peningkatan dalam bentuk nilai. Peningkatan tersebut terjadi dari nilai rata-rata menulis deskripsi pratindakan hingga siklus II. Pada tahap pratindakan nilai rata-rata siswa 62,5, siklus I nilai rata-ratanya 67,19, dan siklus II sebesar 78 88.KATA KUNCI: Penggunaan; Media Audio Visual; Menulis Teks Deskripsi> ABSTRACT: This study aims to describe the use of audio-visual learning media in students' descriptive text writing skills as well as to determine the effectiveness of the use of audio-visual learning media in improving the skills of writing descriptive texts for grade VII students of Pangeran Antasari Junior High School. This research is a Class Action Research which is carried out in 2 cycles. The results of the study show that (1). The application of audio-visual learning media in learning to write descriptive texts for Grade VII students of Pangeran Antasari Junior High School, Medan city is carried out in two cycles and is able to create active and fun learning. There was an increase in the learning process. Students looked more enthusiastic and actively asked questions and discussed. During the writing process, students are more focused on their work. (2). The application of audio-visual media is very effective in improving the skills of writing description texts for grade VII students of SMP-2 Pangeran Antasari, Medan city. This effectiveness can be seen from the increase in value. The increase occurred from the average score of writing pre-action descriptions to cycle II. In the pre-action stage, the average score of students was 62.5, the average score of the first cycle was 67.19, and the second cycle was 78 88.KEYWORDS: Usage; Audio Visual Media; Writing Descriptive Text

Abstract

Gerakan Literasi merupakan salah satu upaya untuk melakukan revolusi karakter dan memperkuat kebhonekaan serta memperkuat restorasi sosial Indonesia. Salah satu program Gerakan Literasi sekolah yaitu menanamkan rasa kepakaan dan wujud cinta tanah air. Temuan di sekolah SMA Rakyat Pancur Batu yaitu 1).Gerakan literasi dilakukan hanya bentuk literasi baca dan hitung, 2). Minimnya usaha yang dilakukan guru untuk membuat Gerakan literasi kepekaan terhadap cinta tanah air. Tujuan Gerakan literasi dalam wujud cinta tanah air yaitu sebagai penguatan mental, rasa bangaa terhadap tanah air, Pendidikan karakter. Hasil kegiatan ini nantinya menambah referensi dan kebijakan baru terhadap sekolah sebagai upaya untuk menanamkan karakter cinta tanah air melalui Gerakan literasi sekolah. Kata Kunci: Pendidikan Karakter,Gerakan Literasi.

Abstract

This study examines the cultural politics affecting Indonesian literature in the global literary arena. It analyses how literary politics, standardisation, implicit agendas, and validation systems impact international reception. The study investigates how global literary standards reshape Indonesian narratives to match international preferences, often at the expense of cultural authenticity. In addition, several works by some prominent Indonesian authors, including Toer, Anwar and Kurniawan are being analysed. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach with discourse analysis, interview and case studies, the research reveals three key findings: translation challenges for Indonesian literary works, limited international publication opportunities, and underrepresentation in global literary awards and criticism. Based on these findings, the study advocates for more inclusive literary practices to enhance Indonesian literature’s global visibility while preserving its cultural integrity.

Abstract

This study contextualizes how disease in form of leprosy is represented in literary works by focusing of three novels written by Hawai’ian-American writers. The legacy of leprosy outbreak in Hawai’ian archipelago in the 1800’s challenges the popular imagination of Hawai’i as idealized timeless tropical paradise. This study explores how the policy of isolation exiles leprosy patients in isolated island, Moloka’i, segregated from other citizens. Hawai’ians cultural contexts concerning balance (pono), and identity based on familial ties and sense of place is employed to explore how leprosy disrupts Hawai’ian conception of identity. This study also explores the concept of ecological other as theorized by Serpil Oppermann to contextualize the stigma and harassment associated with leprosy of being unclean and contagious. The object of this study are three Hawai’ian-American novels, Hawai’i (1959), Shark Dialogues (1995) and Moloka’i (2004). This study concludes that the representation of leprosy in selected Hawai’ian-American literature contextualizes the social stigma associated toward its sufferers and disrupts the question of identity through erasure of familial history and genealogy. It further posits the possibility of reclaiming genealogy, history and ancestry lost due to leprosy and how the reclamation results in creating hybrid Hawai’ian identity.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve the ability to write exposition texts of class X students at SMA Eka Prasetya Medan through the application of learning media based on local wisdom of the Batak Tribe. This study was motivated by the low writing skills of students, as indicated by the results of daily tests that were still below the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM). The method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was carried out in two cycles. In each cycle, the researcher implemented a learning strategy that was designed in stages, with a focus on improving the learning approach, providing more specific feedback, and increasing the intensity of writing exercises and group discussions. The results showed a significant increase in students' writing skills. In cycle I, only 17.65% of students achieved scores above the KKM, while in cycle II, the percentage increased to 87.35%. These findings prove that the use of local wisdom-based media is effective in improving the ability to write exposition texts and strengthening students' understanding of the structure and content of the writing.

Abstract

Kajian ini merupakan hasil dari kegiatan kuliah umum yang juga merupakan salah satu bentuk kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Pembahasan berfokus pada pentingnya keterampilan membaca bahan akademik untuk kebutuhan penelitian di kalangan mahasiswa dan cara yang dapat diterapkan untuk mencapai hasil yang baik. Pembahasan tentang keterampilan membaca bahan akademik penting bagi mahasiswa agar mereka dapat berhasil dalam melakukan penelitian untuk tugas dan skripsi. Kegiatan tersebut diadakan dalam bentuk kuliah umum untuk mahasiswa semester 4 program studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Respati Yogyakarta. Kegiatan tersebut dibagi menjadi tiga tahap yakni, pemaparan materi, aktivitas tanya-jawab, latihan membaca bahan akademik dan kesimpulan. Hasil dari forum diskusi tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa membaca bahan akademik yang meliputi artikel jurnal ilmiah, laporan penelitian, buku teks, tesis, disertasi, dan lain-lain bertujuan untuk mengumpulkan sebanyak mungkin informasi (data) mengenai objek yang diteliti. Membaca bahan akademik akan menjadi mudah dengan mempelajari cara memahami jenis-jenis dan karakteristik dari bahan akademik, menemukan kalimat topik (topic sentence) dan menguasai teknik membaca cepat.

Abstract

This research examined the effect of using a language game approach on developing Indonesian speaking skills among students at PG-TK Plus Sutomo 1, Medan. This study was designed using an experimental method using a pretest-posttest format with a control group. The research data showed a significant improvement in students' speaking skills in the experimental group, with an average pretest score of 61.2, which increased to 77.5 after the posttest. The Paired Sample T-Test obtained a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), while the Independent Sample T-Test obtained a significance value of 0.025 (p < 0.05). These results confirm that applying language game techniques significantly improves students' speaking skills. Although the effect size is relatively small (Cohen's d = 0.2), this finding indicates that the influence of language games on improving speaking skills is still limited in practice. However, applying this technique remains relevant because it fosters speaking courage, enriches vocabulary, and encourages active student involvement. It can also serve as a basis for further studies using a larger and more diverse sample range. This study concludes that the language game strategy is a practical approach to improving and developing students' Indonesian oral communication skills at PG-TK Plus Sutomo 1 Medan. Although the effects are relatively small in practical terms, this strategy is still beneficial in building speaking confidence, enriching vocabulary, and increasing active student participation. The implications of these findings suggest the need for further research with a larger sample size to more fully demonstrate the influence of language games on speaking skills.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks eksposisi siswa kelas X di SMA Negeri 1 STM hilir melalui penerapan media pembelajaran berbasis kearifan lokal Suku Batak Karo. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya keterampilan menulis siswa, yang ditunjukkan oleh hasil ulangan harian yang masih berada di bawah Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM). Metode yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dilakukan dalam dua siklus. Pada setiap siklus, peneliti menerapkan strategi pembelajaran yang dirancang secara bertahap, dengan fokus pada perbaikan pendekatan pembelajaran, pemberian umpan balik yang lebih spesifik, serta peningkatan intensitas latihan menulis dan diskusi kelompok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan menulis siswa. Pada siklus I, hanya 17,65% siswa yang mencapai nilai di atas KKM, sedangkan pada siklus II, persentase tersebut meningkat menjadi 87,35%. Temuan ini membuktikan bahwa penggunaan media berbasis kearifan lokal sangat efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks eksposisi serta memperkuat pemahaman siswa terhadap struktur dan isi tulisan.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explore the role and representation of nature in F.Sionil Jose’s Dusk. He explores the journey of a Philippines’ clan who migrates from Northern Luzon into Central Plains to escape the Spanish oppression. Through the presentation of an omniscient narrator who narrates the journey of Istak Samson and his clan, F.Sionil Jose depicts the lushness of Philippines’ wilderness. To explore his representation of nature, this paper applies narratology and ecocriticism. Several narratological concepts used are mainly related with the issue of space, concerning the presentation and the spatial standpoint of the depiction of nature. These concepts analyze how the omniscient narrator of Dusk portrays the wilderness of Philippines interior. Nature is primarily depicted in two aspects. Firstly, nature can provide shelter, nourishment, and also comfort for the humanity. Secondly, nature is also an untamed and even hostile force who can claim the life of people who pass through it.
