Abstract

This paper explores how nature is depicted by two poets of different nationality using ecocriticism. Ecological approach is used as framework to focus more on the connection and relationship between human and their environment and the possible impact on the disruption of human-nature relationship. People living in different environment will have different reception toward their surroundings. The aim of this paper is to explore how both poets describe nature in their selected works. Ayurzana and Yong ShuHoong represent two poets exposed to different environment;hence, this paper seeks to present how different Ayurzana who lives in a rural area portray his surrounding compared with Hoong as an urban dweller. As a native Mongolian, Ayurzana explores the close connection between Mongolian people and nature. On the other hand, Hoong’s poetry elaborates life in cities and people that become detached from the natural environment. By analyzing two poets from different living conditions, this paper acknowledges that ecological issue might differ from one region to another.

Abstract

This paper compares and contrasts two short stories, Guy De Maupassant’s Two Friends and Arturo Arias’ Toward Patzun. Both stories have the same thematic structure as the harshness and brutality during wartime situation is a similar concern to the aforementioned writers. Although both writers foreground the savagery of war, the different cultural background, nationality, literary tradition cause differences in the way both writer narrate their short stories. While De Maupassant depicts the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), Arias squares his narration in the Guatemalan civil war (1960-1996). The differences of canonical status between De Maupassant and Arias is also scrutinized in this paper. While De Maupassant is a household name in Western literary tradition, the popularity of Arias remains obscure. This paper argues that the differences in canonization is linked also with the status of Two Friends in the hypercanon, on the other hand Toward Patzun is located in the countercanon. It is hoped that this paper can contribute toward questioning the privileged status of Western literary works compared to the non-Western author.

Abstract

The research aims to examine the form of maxims violation in “Markobar” activity, review the factors of violations, and identify the main reasons from a socio-pragmatic perspective for cultural education. The research design is descriptive-qualitative approach. The data were obtained from sentences on Markobar activities in the book “Panduan Markobar dalam Budaya Mandailing” comprising 25 texts as well as interviews with participants. Violations of the cooperative principle in the oral tradition of Markobar occur for several reasons, i.e., 1) Flouting maxim. This occurs by expressing gratitude to God and greeting the Prophet Muhammad. Speakers tend to hide things due to cultural factors; 2) Infringing maxim is not found; 3) Opting out of maxim, the speaker is not willing to provide information to the interlocutor in a straightforward manner; 4) Suspending maxim, listener should not expect to hear but the speaker clarifies what he means to make the interlocutor understand. Research in socio-pragmatic studies needs to be carried out to explain its intentions, objectives as a cultural education and revitalization.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of local wisdom values in Deli Malay pantun, especially those used in traditional wedding ceremonies, as well as efforts to preserve them through the telangkai profession in North Sumatra. Using semiotics and structuralism theories, this study found local wisdom values in 18 pantuns that are preserved in each stanza. These pantuns reflect the principles of politeness and respect in social interaction, where the ethics of speaking with pantun becomes a symbol of respect between individuals and groups. Respect for culture is also evident in the spirit of preserving Malay customs to be remembered and passed on to the next generation. The symbolism of nature in pantun, such as the rambai tree and mango fruit, teaches people to appreciate time and process in life. This research also highlights the role of the telangkai profession as the guardian of Malay pantun preservation. As professional pantun speakers, telangkai play an important role in maintaining this oral tradition in traditional ceremonies. However, this profession faces great challenges due to the influence of mass media and popular culture. To survive, some telangkai in North Sumatra have started to adopt digital media to disseminate pantun and involve the younger generation in the preservation of this oral literature. Preservation efforts through training, workshops, and pantun competitions are also carried out by cultural communities to arouse public interest in Malay pantun.
