Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected educational practices worldwide, including English language teaching and learning practices like teaching speaking courses. It has also shifted face-to-face learning into distance learning modes. Implementing e-portfolios in assessing students' speaking performance seems to be an alternative as this technique could be implemented fully online. However, how well e-portfolios facilitate students' learning engagement in speaking courses, especially during online learning, has been little documented. Thus, this study aims to explore the students' learning engagement and the challenges of implementing e-portfolios in an online speaking course. Using a single case study in an English Language Department at a public education university in Indonesia, the study involved ten participants selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected from various resources, such as phone interviews, videos, and reflection journals, as data/source triangulation. The data were then analyzed using a theoretical thematic analysis technique. The findings revealed that the participants had active participation and showed almost similar engagements in cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains during the online speaking course. However, the students also faced several challenges that inevitably affected their feelings. Few implications are also discussed pertaining to conduct English language teaching practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The English teacher does not involve a net meeting during online English learning. The net meeting is vital because it becomes a space for students to communicate and interact with their friends and teachers. It can trigger feelings, and they do not want to be actively involved in learning English online because they cannot experience the actual teaching experience and interact with their peers and teachers directly. This study aims to analyze student interactions and the difficulties involved in online English learning. This research uses mixed research methods by following a sequential explanatory research design. The sample in this study consisted of 140 students and was selected using the cluster random sampling technique. The process of collecting data in this study was carried out by distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews. The results of this study indicate that the involvement of students during online English learning is included in the high level seen from every aspect. However, there are some difficulties involved in learning English online, including internet connection problems, boredom, and loss of concentration, which psychologically affect motivation. Then, the slow response makes it difficult for students to contract online. In addition, the limited knowledge of English and the lack of direct interaction with the teacher, which makes students understand English subject matter independently, and the lack of direct interaction with fellow students also establish friendships with other students.

The students preferred the teacher’s feedback after the practice since it would make them feel safe. The students also suggested anonymous peer feedback practice since they could give the comments honestly, with details, and specifics. Through this study, students can learn to improve their skills in communicating and collaborating with their peers. The study also provided the teacher information to create more effective and efficient online peer feedback practice. Abstract

The Indonesian government policy due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic requires all students and teachers to carry out the learning process online. Starting from various learning strategies to the assessment process must be carried out by applying an online system. In line with this policy, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the implementation of one type of assessment, namely formative assessment in online learning situations. This study focuses on students’ perceptions of the implementation of formative assessment in English learning. By using a mixed-method research design, data collection was carried out through survey and interview methods. The samples of this study were 215 students of a Junior High School in Bali, Indonesia and involved 8 students from the entire sample as participants in the interview. The survey results showed that students had a positive perception of the implementation of online formative assessment. This is also supported by information obtained in the interview process, in which students feel that this type of online formative assessment is comfortable to carry out, especially because of the use of simple and easy tools. In addition, students also feel that there are things that make online formative assessment less effective, such as the unavailability of feedback which also causes students to be less interested in this type of assessment. Through this study, it is hoped that it can provide various information for students and teachers for the purpose of improving the quality of the implementation of formative assessment in English learning.
