Abstract

This study explores the history of one of the important symbols in the Christian tradition, namely the history of the fish symbol. This study argues that the fish symbol is one of the survival strategies for Christians to survive and contest with other groups in the socio-religious context at that time. Thus, this study formulates research questions such as how is the history of fish in the Christian tradition? How does the fish symbol become a medium of survival and resistance? Does the fish symbol have any relevance in the history of Christianity in Indonesia? This research uses literature study, which means relying on written literature discussing fish symbolism in Christianity's history. The results of this study indicate that the symbolization of fish in Christian history can not only be seen from the theological aspect but also from the socio-historical aspect as a survival strategy. Furthermore, the research material is structured with the following framework: the first part discusses the history and meaning of the fish symbol as a savior and unifier in ancient Christianity; the second part discusses the symbolic significance of fish as the spread of Christianity in Indonesia; the third part, symbolism as a strategy to survive both in the form of acculturation and religious-cultural identification in the context of religion and culture. In short, the symbolism of fish in the Christian tradition is very complex, containing theological content and historical-social-cultural. By understanding how symbolization works in religious traditions, we, therefore, can understand how religion in all its aspects developed from the past to the present, and also to the future.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate whether the idea of ultimate reality in world religions contributes to the characteristics of the world religion paradigm, which is hierarchical cosmology or “subject-object cosmology.” Several research on this topic claims that one of the characteristics of the world religion paradigm is its hierarchical perspective. Discussing this issue is important to distinguish the world religions as the paradigm and the world religions as the most widely embraced religion. This study argues that the hierarchical perspective of the world religion paradigm can be rooted in the idea of ultimate reality, that there is a supreme, foremost, and most principal reality in the continuity of this universe, namely the supernatural or God. The hierarchical cosmology consists of three main domains: supernatural/God, culture/human, and nature. This study uses a literature study methodology, relying on books, journals, and texts related to research questions. This study finds that the world religion paradigm or hierarchical cosmology or “subject-object cosmology” is prominent, especially in Abrahamic religions such as Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, even though the concept of ultimate reality in these three religions is different.

Abstract

The design of this smart greenhouse prototype is one of the implementations of artificial intelligence controlled by the Arduino uno microcontroller, which has actuators in the form of lights and pumps and is equipped with DHT22 sensors, Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensors. The method used in making this smart greenhouse prototype is the Prototype method. There are seven stages in the prototype method that guide the process of making robots, namely gathering requirements, building prototypes/prototypes, evaluating prototypes, programming systems, testing systems, evaluating systems, and using the system. The most important stage in making this smart greenhouse prototype is the stage where at this stage testing is carried out on the results of the design and programming of the robot that has been made to prove the robot prototype is in accordance with what is desired or not. The testing process is carried out in tandem with the assembly process and programming process. In the process of assembling and programming the robot prototype, it is done with system errors. Testing with system errors is carried out to get a robot prototype that works optimally.

Abstract

The global ecological crisis demands an interdisciplinary approach that goes beyond technical solutions to include spiritual dimensions. This study explores Pasang ri Kajang, the ancestral teachings of the Ammatoa Kajang Indigenous People in South Sulawesi, as a source of ecotheological values integrating ecological awareness with religious belief. Employing a qualitative approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, the research was conducted within the Kajang customary territory, focusing on the Ammatoa (customary leader), their teachings, and daily practices. The findings reveal that Pasang ri Kajang functions not only as a customary normative system but also as a contextual theological framework that defines human–nature relations in both ecological and spiritual terms. The principles of simplicity (kamase-masea), prohibitions against environmental exploitation, and rituals of reverence toward sacred forests embody the local praxis of ecotheology. Furthermore, the Ammatoa is identified as an “ecological imam,” a spiritual and ecological leader who interprets Pasang as an “ecological revelation” that safeguards harmony among humans, nature, and the Creator. This study asserts that the local wisdom of Pasang contributes significantly to global ecotheological discourse by offering an alternative narrative to anthropocentric models of development. It demonstrates that faith, culture, and ecology can engage in meaningful dialogue to construct a new, context-sensitive, and spiritually just paradigm of environmental preservation

Abstract

Interfaith dialogue in Indonesia is generally framed as a formal religious forum oriented toward theological consensus, which may limit more comprehensive engagement across different social contexts. This approach often to overlooks the dynamics of interreligious praxis that grow organically in social spaces, particularly in the context of agrarian movements and struggles for structural justice. This study aims to examine the Omah Tani community in Batang, Central Java, as a manifestation of interfaith dialogue rooted in agrarian solidarity and collective action. Using a qualitative case study design, data is collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation and analysis. The analysis is conducted thematically, drawing on the theoretical frameworks of dia-praxis and the decolonization of religion, to explore how expressions of faith are realized in social actions that transcend doctrinal and institutional boundaries. The research findings indicate that interfaith interaction within the Omah Tani community takes place through collective work in land management, agrarian policy advocacy, and interreligious spiritual practices. This form of engagement creates a participatory and horizontal dialogue space, where solidarity becomes the foundation of inclusive and transformative religiosity. This research offers a conceptual contribution to expanding the paradigm of interfaith dialogue, from one that previously focused solely on theological discussions among elites to one realized through collective action. By examining Omah Tani’s experience, this research demonstrates that faith or religion is not merely an individual expression but also a collective force in the struggle for justice. The case of Omah Tani demonstrates that interfaith dialogue can transcend exclusivity and “colonial” perspectives, growing in a collaborative space grounded in solidarity and commitment to vulnerable groups.

Abstract

This study examines the Catholic Church's resistance to a geothermal energy development project in Flores, Indonesia, by highlighting the theological, ecological, and social perspectives that underlie it. This resistance is motivated by concerns about potential environmental damage, health impacts, and threats to the socio-economic well-being of local communities. For the Catholic Church, preserving God's creation is not only a spiritual mandate but also a moral responsibility related to a commitment to sustainable development. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study method.Data were collected through interviews and supported by secondary sources such as media reports and relevant academic literature. Through thematic analysis, this study examines various forms of advocacy carried out by the Church, including the use of moral discourse, grassroots mobilization, and collaboration with indigenous communities and environmental organizations. This study also examines how the Church plays a role as a religious institution and social agent in challenging the narrative of state and corporate development that ignores ecological sustainability and community rights. The findings show that the Catholic Church in Flores plays a significant role in shaping public opinion, encouraging community resistance, and influencing policy debates related to geothermal energy. This study contributes to a broader understanding of ecotheology and the role of religion in environmental justice movements. The Church’s resistance reflects a contextual theological response that connects spirituality with social-ecological activism and offers a model for just, sustainable, and inclusive development.

Abstract

Graves’ disease is the most common form of autoimmune hyperthyroidism, characterized by excessive thyroid hormone production due to overstimulation of the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor by autoantibodies (TRAb). Beyond genetic and immunological factors, psychosocial stress particularly chronic occupational stress plays a significant role in triggering and exacerbating the disease. Persistent activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis may cause immune dysregulation, contributing to the development of thyroid autoimmunity. A female patient working as a Head of the Accounting Division with a high workload presented with weight loss, palpitations, tremor, and insomnia. Laboratory evaluation revealed elevated T3 and FT4 levels, suppressed TSH, and positive TRAb. Thyroid ultrasonography showed diffuse gland enlargement consistent with diffuse toxic goitre. The patient was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and treated with thiamazole, propranolol, and alprazolam. Her perfectionist work style and chronic occupational stress were considered key triggers for sustained HPA axis activation and autoantibody formation. Numerous studies indicate that psychosocial stress increases the risk of Graves’ disease through complex neuroendocrine–immune interactions. Chronic HPA axis activation alters cortisol secretion and elevates proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α, leading to a loss of immune tolerance to thyroid tissue. This case underscores the importance of addressing psychosocial factors in the clinical evaluation and management of Graves’ disease. Chronic occupational stress may contribute to the onset and progression of Graves’ disease through neuroendocrine and immune dysregulation. Comprehensive management including pharmacologic therapy, stress reduction, psychosocial support, and workload adjustment is essential to achieve optimal remission and improve patients’ quality of life.

Abstract

In Excited Delirium: Race, Police Violence, and the Invention of a Disease, Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús examines excited delirium, a pseudo-racialized medical diagnosis that has been used to explain the deaths of Black and Brown people in police custody. Beliso-De Jesús argues that excited delirium is used to legitimize police violence against people who are stigmatized as “the drug-addled, unhinged, superhuman Black persons.” Through this book, and this is the most important aspect for me in reading this book, Beliso-De Jesús shows that Afro-Latine religious traditions, especially the practices of copresences (taking spirits and spiritualism seriously), can serve not only to understand this racial violence, but also to heal.
