Abstract

This research problematizes the law of interfaith marriage in Indonesia and its application. By presenting some cases of interfaith marriages that occurred during 2022, through literature searches and media reports, this research shows the tendency of violations of human rights, particularly the right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB), especially by using the argument of the Marriage Law No. 1, 1974. This study found that marriage law in Indonesia does not provide legal certainty for interfaith marriages, thus allowing certain groups to discriminate against interfaith couples accessing legal marriages. Furthermore, this research argues that one way to make marriage law in Indonesia inclusive is to use the human rights paradigm as the basis for formulating marriage law.

Abstract

Suicide, a global health challenge identified in Goal 3 of the global agenda for enhancing worldwide well-being, demands urgent attention. This study focused on predicting suicidal thoughts using machine learning, leveraging the 2021 National Women's Life Experience Survey (SPHPN) involving women aged 15 to 64. Analyzing 11,305 ever-married women, 504 (4.5%) reported experiencing suicidal thoughts. The outcome variable was binary (1 for suicidal thoughts, 0 for none). The study used seven predictors: age, education level, residence type, physical and sexual violence, smoking frequency, alcohol consumption, and depression. Ordinary logistic regression and SMOTE-based logistic regression were applied. The former identified physical violence, depression, and sexual violence as crucial factors, while the latter emphasized physical violence, sexual violence, and age. In cases of class imbalance, the SMOTE-enhanced model exhibited improved performance in terms of sensitivity, false positive rate, balanced accuracy, and Kappa statistic, with lower standard errors of parameter estimates. The findings highlight the importance of addressing violence and mental health in policies aimed at reducing suicidal thoughts among women. Policymakers can use these insights to develop targeted interventions, and healthcare providers can identify high-risk individuals for timely interventions. Community programs and public health campaigns should promote mental well-being and prevent suicidal behaviors using these findings. Future research should include more predictors, diverse populations, and longitudinal data to better understand causal relationships and timing. Interdisciplinary collaboration and advanced machine learning techniques can enhance predictive accuracy and model interpretability.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the concept  of educational entrepreneurship as a transformational approach in designing an education system that is more adaptive to the challenges of the 21st century. This approach was born out of the need to overcome the limitations of the conventional education system which is often bureaucratic, rigid, and less responsive to social, economic, and technological dynamics. Using descriptive qualitative methods based on literature studies and case studies, this study analyzes various models of educational innovation built by education entrepreneurs in Indonesia, such as digital platforms, community-based schools, and nature-based learning. The results of the study show that educational entrepreneurs play an important role as agents of change who are able to create an alternative education ecosystem that is participatory, contextual, and solution-based. The models developed have proven to be effective in improving access, curriculum flexibility, and community participation in the educational process. In addition, they are able to combine social values, technological innovation, and economic sustainability in one integrative framework. In conclusion, educational entrepreneurship is a promising strategy to improve the inequality and stagnation of the formal education system. Therefore, this approach needs to receive structural support through policies, multi-sector partnerships, and strengthening the leadership capacity of entrepreneurship-based education

Abstract

By borrowing Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, this study argues that religious discourse is one of the instruments often used by the dominant class (the majority, who are in power) to carry out symbolic violence against the dominated class (the minority, who are ruled). For example, through religious discourses that seem plural and open, the power and domination of the dominant class are continuously perpetuated. This study aims to analyze the symbolic violence that occurs in religious discourse in Indonesia, especially in the study of religion, by reviewing the discourse of “Agama vs. Kepercayaan” and “Moderasi Beragama.” According to Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, the symbolic violence referred to here is violence that does not appear as violence and is latent. Victims of this type of violence do not feel they are victims of violence as if what happened was natural and should have been. This study also argues that symbolic violence in religious discourse in Indonesia is widely produced in educational institutions, primarily through the hands of academics, because through educational institutions, discourses of “Agama vs. Kepercayaan” and “Moderasi Beragama” are formulated and then implemented in government policies, as if the discourse has accommodated all religions and beliefs, but only perpetuates the interests of the dominant class. In short, this study argues that religious discourses such as “Agama vs. Kepercayaan” and “Moderasi Beragama” are (re)produced for the interests claimed to be for the majority through educational institutions and so on and produce symbolic violence.

Abstract

Human rights are an aspect of social existence. Human rights also include the right to religious freedom in retaining faith and belief in human beings. By comprehending the right to religious freedom, we may identify the rights of belief in all individuals. This study aims to inform readers about the Ahmadiyya minority group’s religious freedom abuses in West Kalimantan due to discriminatory policies. This study argues that Ahmadiyya in Sintang has encountered forms of discrimination against the rights to religious freedom in Indonesia. Thus, this study formulates research questions such as (1) what is the chronology and form of persecution against Ahmadiyya? (2) what is the role of actors in discriminating against the Ahmadiyya minority group in West Kalimantan? (3) What is the policy on religious freedom toward the Ahmadiyya minority group in West Kalimantan? This study employed qualitative methods to describe the chronology of Ahmadiyya events in West Kalimantan through interviews and documentation. The findings of the study indicate that religious freedom discrimination against Ahmadiyya in West Kalimantan demonstrates: 1) the existence of violations of the right to freedom of religion; 2) the existence of contradictory policies; and 3) the existence of religiously motivated violence in West Kalimantan. This study’s findings demonstrate that the violation of religious freedom against the Ahmadiyya in West Kalimantan is a type of religious-based discrimination.

Abstract

Previous studies claimed that arranged marriages occur in underdeveloped societies, among the uneducated and low social classes. However, in Indonesia, especially South Sulawesi, arranged marriages also occur among young educated Muslim women. This study aims to answer why young educated Muslim women accept arranged marriages by their parents or families instead of marrying their boyfriends. This study also elaborated further on the issue of their feelings and experiences, such as feelings after marriage, dating experiences, and the reasons their parents matched them. This study used a postcolonial approach to analyze why young educated Muslim women accept arranged marriages. By conducting in-depth interviews with five young educated Muslim women who have married through the arranged process, this study found several reasons why young educated Muslim women accept arranged marriages, including the family system, religious teachings, economic considerations, and personal reasons that they consciously choose

Abstract

For thousands of years, the Dayak Ngaju people in Central Kalimantan have practiced a traditional rice cultivation system called Manugal, which involves planting rice directly on the ground without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. This method relies on rainwater and natural materials, and it is guided by the teachings of the Kaharingan belief system, recognizing rice as a divine manifestation, and adhering to the traditional calendar. However, the Green Revolution and the globalization of modern food production, initiated in the late 1960s, introduced intensive agriculture, chemical inputs, and high-yielding crop varieties. This modernization marginalized local traditions, including Manugal, in Central Kalimantan. This qualitative descriptive case study examines the background of the Green Revolution and its impact on Manugal, the ecological consequences of agricultural modernization, and the comparison between Manugal and modern monoculture farming systems. The study aims to propose strategies for maintaining the Manugal tradition and achieving ecological sustainability.
