Abstract

Ultraviolet light, especially ultraviolet B (UV-B) light, can cause the formation of free radicals, namely reactive oxygen species (ROS). Jackfruit leaves are rich in phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, have good antioxidant properties, and can act as UV-protectors. Several studies using natural materials have been carried out to determine the protective activity of Jackfruit Leaf Extract (Artocarpus heterophylla Lamk.) as a UV-protector based on the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value. This research was conducted using the in vitro method using spectrophotometry by first macerating the jackfruit leaves, then concentrating them with a rotary evaporator. The extract obtained was formulated into a stick and then dissolved into several concentrations, namely 2,500 ppm, 5,000 ppm, 7,500 ppm, and 10,000 ppm. The results showed that the SPF value at a concentration of 2,500 ppm was 8.09 (maximum protection), at a concentration of 5,000 ppm was 16.83 (ultra protection), at a concentration of 7,500 ppm was 14.34 (maximum protection), and at a concentration of 10,000 ppm (maximum protection). Based on the results of the study, a 2% stick of jackfruit leaf extract (Artocarpus heterophylla Lamk.) had the highest SPF value, namely 16.83 in the ultra-protection category at a concentration of 5,000 ppm, so it has the potential to be a UV-protector.

Abstract

Telepharmacy describes the use of technology in interactions between pharmacists and patients. Given that telepharmacy is the most recent development in the delivery of digital pharmacy services, the question of how prepared pharmacists are to provide high-quality services frequently comes up and receives attention. The purpose of this study was to determine the viewpoints of pharmacists in telepharmacy services. From February to April 2023, a cross-sectional survey was done using a Google form. The study population included 111 pharmacists in charge of network pharmacies in Bali Province. Their thoughts were assessed using a credible and reliable questionnaire created by the researchers. The questions were split into two sections: a professional demographic items, and a section describing the perspectives, benefits, and challenges of telepharmacy. To get a more detailed or comprehensive response, open-ended questions were added. In general, especially during a pandemic, pharmacists were aware of being involved in remote services (non-face-to-face interaction) and telepharmacy services. This study makes clear that pharmacists' involvement is essential for creating a long-distance relationship between them and their patients. Therefore, pharmacists should learn how crucial communication is to increase patient satisfaction.

Abstract

The cocoa seeds of the Gumbrih-Bali region are a natural commodity with great potential for development or processing by local communities. The purpose of this research is to provide information about the antioxidant potential contained in cocoa seeds. Testing the antioxidant capacity in this study uses the Uv-Vis spectrophotometry method at 517 nm wavelengths. Free radical scavanger is measured with control absorption and samples was analyzed with regression curve. The research results proved that the antioxidant (AAI) in the n-butanol fraction show result very strong ability of 4.64 compared to the 0.42 ethyl acetate fraction and 0.46 n-hexane fraction. These results prove that the potential chemical content of cocoa seeds is high in polar solvents (n-butanol fractions) such as flavonoid compounds. Furthermore, this research will be used as a basis for developing natural herbal ingredients such as cocoa which can be consumed in the community to prevent degenerative diseases.

Abstract

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a critical-priority group of MDR bacteria and its spread can occur in hospital inpatient settings. Several studies showed that antibiotics consumption for inpatients can cause E. coli resistance to other antibiotics called cross-resistance. The aim of this study to determine the cross-resistance in E. coli to antibiotics in the inpatient installation of the regional general hospital "X" in Bali, Indonesia by analyzing the relationship between the antibiotic consumption and the percentage of antibiotic resistance of E. coli. This research is an ecological study with the independent variable is the antibiotics consumption defined as defined daily doses/100 bed-days and the dependent variable is the percentage of E. coli resistance during 2017-2020. The correlation between the level of antibiotic consumption and the percentage of E. coli resistance to antibiotics was analyzed using the Pearson correlation tests. The results showed that the consumption of tetracycline had a significant correlation with increased resistance of E. coli to meropenem and piperacillin-tazobactam (r=0.8-1.0; p<0.05). This showed that there is cross-resistance in E. coli. This incident is associated with selective pressure, horizontal and vertical gene transfer in E. coli. The consumption of tetracycline, apart from inducing the production of the tet gene which is the cause of resistance to tetracycline, can also induce the production of resistance genes to broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics such as piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem.

Abstract

Abstract: White swallow nest (SWP) contains Epidermal Growth Factor, which can increase immunity, and glutathione, which functions as an antioxidant. SWP has a high potential to become an antioxidant-rich immunomodulatory drink. Combining maltodextrin and povidone in a granule formula can protect the active substance from heat and maintain the flavor components. However, the wrong concentration can reduce the quality of the resulting granules. This study aims to obtain a combination of maltodextrin and povidone concentrations in SWP granule formulations that produce granules with the best quality and physical stability. The wet granulation method prepared the ten SWP formulas with combined concentrations of maltodextrin-povidone (code: F1 to F10). Evaluation of the physical quality of the granules (organoleptic, pH, soluble time, moisture content, compressibility index, and flow properties) was evaluated on the first, seventh, fourteenth, and twenty-first days. Linear regression is used to create an equation model of the effect of formulation on granule quality parameters. Formula F6 has the lowest compressibility index and the highest flow rate. There was no significant difference for all physical quality parameters of all formulas during storage (p>0.05). The effect of varying concentrations of maltodextrin is inversely proportional to the effect of varying concentrations of povidone on the physical quality of SWP granules. From the research results, it can be concluded that the combination of maltodextrin (5%) and povidone (1%) in F6 produces granules with the best physical quality. All formulas are stable during storage.

Abstract

Indonesia's high UV-A exposure significantly contributes to skin hyperpigmentation conditions such as melasma. This study investigated the effectiveness of Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk.) leaf serum in reducing dark spots in a guinea pig model of melasma induced by UV-A radiation. Crude extracts were prepared and purified from Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk.) leaves, then formulated into serums at 4% and 5% concentrations. These formulations underwent physical quality evaluations, including organoleptic properties, pH, homogeneity, spread ability, adhesion, and viscosity. Anti-hyperpigmentation effects were assessed using Masson Fontana staining on UV-A-exposed guinea pigs treated for 14 days. The results demonstrated a reduction in melanin content, with mean values of 17.97±1.68 (negative control), 1.17±0.28 (positive control), 3.56±2.77 (4% serum), and 2.56±1.25 (5% serum). Histological analysis showed that fibroblast proliferation and epidermal hyperplasia were significantly reduced with serum treatment. These effects are attributed to the flavonoid content in Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk.) leaves, which exhibit antioxidant and anti-melanogenesis properties. In conclusion, Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk.) leaf serum, particularly at 5% concentration, is effective in reducing melasma-related hyperpigmentation and may offer a safer alternative to synthetic treatments.

Abstract

Free radical compounds are molecules that possess reactive and unstable properties, which can damage biomolecules by disrupting the integrity of DNA, proteins and lipids. This condition can trigger oxidative stress, which can result in degenerative diseases. Humans require antioxidant intake from external sources when their own endogenous antioxidants are insufficient to counteract free radicals. Previous studies have demonstrated the high antioxidant activity of mangrove seeds. However, the antioxidant potential of mangrove seed coats and fruits remains underexplored, particularly when assessed using the DPPH and FRAP methods. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity of seed coat and fruit extracts of Xylocarpus granatum J. Koenig using the DPPH and FRAP methods. This research is quantitative research with laboratory experimental approach. Antioxidant activity testing using DPPH and FRAP methods. Gallic acid was used as a comparison standard for antioxidant activity. The results obtained from the antioxidant activity testing of the ethanol extracts of seed shell, fruit and gallic acid were IC50 values of 10.83 mg/mL, 4.91 mg/mL and 0,793 mg/mL (DPPH) and RP50 of 4,455.63 mg/mL, 15,556.32 mg/mL and 34.04 mg/mL (FRAP). It is acknowledged that discrepancies in testing methodologies can influence the antioxidant activity of each extract, contingent on the nature of the free radical, the solvent, steric accessibility, and the pH of the medium.

Abstract

Pain is a prevalent symptom of various diseases, characterized by subjective sensory and emotional experiences, often triggered by nerve irritation and pain receptor activation. Prostaglandins play a crucial role as chemical mediators in pain mechanisms. Clove oil-based liniment is commonly used for pain relief, with eugenol as its main active compound. This study investigates the antioxidant activity of VCO-clove liniment with different clove proportions using the DPPH method and evaluates the analgesic potential of eugenol through its interaction with the PTGS2 receptor through in-silico analysis. VCO-clove liniment was formulated with varying clove weight ratio (1:10, 5:10, and 10:10 w/v). Antioxidant activity was evaluated in-vitro using DPPH assay, while the interaction between eugenol and PTGS2 (PDB code: 5KIR) was predicted using molecular docking. The results demonstrated that the 10:10 ratio exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 40.33 µg/mL and an antioxidant activity index (AAI) of 0.99, classified as moderate. In-silico analysis revealed strong binding between eugenol and PTGS2, with a binding energy of -5.22 kcal/mol, suggesting its analgesic potential. In conclusion, VCO-clove liniment shows promise as an antioxidant and analgesic agent, with the 10:10 ratio displaying optimal antioxidant properties, and eugenol contributing significantly to its analgesic effects through PTGS2 interaction.
