Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a significant effect of using the Cake application on students' vocabulary achievement at the eighth grade of Junior High School 23 Kendari. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental class (VIII A) consisting of 25 students, which received treatment using the Cake application, and a control class (VIII B), which followed conventional teaching methods. A vocabulary test consisting of 45 items was used as the research instrument. The treatment was conducted over four weeks, with three sessions per week, each lasting approximately 30 minutes, combining in-class guided activities and independent practice at home. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20, including tests for normality, homogeneity, and an independent sample t-test. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased significantly from the pre-test 47.88 to the post-test 81.88, and the gain score was 34.00. Meanwhile, the mean score of the control class was 44.08 and become 75.00 in the post-test. It creates 30.92 for the gain score. The independent samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between the groups (p = 0.021 < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in vocabulary achievement between the two groups. The null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, these findings demonstrate that mobile-assisted vocabulary learning through the Cake application can effectively enhance students’ vocabulary acquisition when integrated into classroom instruction.

Abstract

Background. The rapid proliferation of emojis as visual symbols in global digital communication has transformed the way meaning, emotion, and grammar are expressed in online discourse. Once viewed merely as decorative icons, emojis have evolved into semiotic units that participate in syntactic and pragmatic structures across languages and cultures. Purpose. This study investigates how emojis contribute to semantic shifts and grammatical innovation in digital interaction, focusing on their function as modifiers, predicates, and discourse markers in written communication. The research aims to analyze the syntactic integration of emojis within linguistic systems and to explore how users employ them to construct meaning beyond traditional textual boundaries. Method. A qualitative linguistic approach combined with corpus-based discourse analysis was utilized to examine 10,000 social media posts collected from multilingual digital platforms, including Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Results. The findings reveal that emojis operate according to emerging syntactic patterns, functioning as replacements for verbs, adjectives, and punctuation while simultaneously encoding affective and contextual information. The study also identifies cross-cultural variations in emoji sequencing that parallel grammatical rules, suggesting the emergence of a visual-syntactic grammar in digital communication. The results demonstrate that emojis are no longer extralinguistic symbols but dynamic components of evolving global language practices. Conclusion. The study concludes that understanding the syntax of emojis provides critical insights into how digital communication fosters linguistic innovation, cultural hybridity, and multimodal literacy in the 21st century.

Abstract

Background. Language plays a fundamental role in shaping and reflecting identity, particularly in multicultural societies where diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds intersect. The relationship between language, identity, and ideology is complex, as discourse both constructs and reflects social realities, power dynamics, and cultural values. Understanding how language operates in such contexts is crucial for exploring how ideologies are communicated and contested. Purpose. This study aims to examine the interplay between language, identity, and ideology in multicultural societies through a sociolinguistic analysis of discourse. It seeks to understand how language is used to construct social identities, negotiate cultural differences, and reinforce or challenge dominant ideologies within diverse communities. Method. A qualitative sociolinguistic approach is employed, using discourse analysis to examine a range of spoken and written texts from multicultural settings. Data sources include media, political speeches, and everyday conversations. The analysis focuses on how linguistic choices reflect identity construction and ideological positioning. Results. The findings reveal that language is a powerful tool for constructing social identities, with speakers strategically using linguistic features to align themselves with particular cultural or political groups. Ideological discourses are often reinforced through language, but also provide spaces for resistance and the negotiation of power relations. Conclusion. This study demonstrates the significant role of language in shaping identity and ideology in multicultural societies, highlighting the need for continued research into how language practices contribute to social dynamics and political discourse.
