Abstract

Background: Indigenous knowledge about medicinal plants used in cosmetics is an important cultural heritage that needs scientific documentation and preservation. In Terunyan Village, Bali, Indonesia, traditional ethnobotanical practices have been passed down orally through generations. Objective: This study aims to systematically record, identify, and analyze the plant species used by the community for natural cosmetic purposes, and to assess their cultural significance using ethnobotanical indices. Methods: An ethnobotanical survey was carried out using semi-structured interviews with 328 informants selected through purposive sampling. Plant specimens were collected, identified, and voucher samples stored at the Herbarium Hortus Botanicus Baliense (THBB). Quantitative analysis used Use Value (UV) and Fidelity Level (FL) to measure cultural importance and consensus. Results: A total of 24 plant species from 18 plant families were documented for cosmetic use. The most frequently cited species were Aloe vera (UV = 0.180), Cocos nucifera (UV = 0.174), and Solanum lycopersicum (UV = 0.169). Leaves were the most used plant parts (40.85%), and pounding was the main processing method (20.43%). Six species had a fidelity level of 100%, indicating strong cultural agreement. The most common applications were for hair care (35.2%), skin moisturizing (28.7%), and skin brightening (24.1%). Conclusion: This research provides the first detailed documentation of traditional cosmetic plant use in Terunyan Village. It highlights significant ethnobotanical diversity and strong cultural consensus for key species. These findings support the preservation of indigenous knowledge and lay the groundwork for sustainable development of natural cosmetic products.

Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs due to high levels of sugar in the blood, this can occur when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar or glucose), or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Management of DM patients can be carried out with non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies. The method used in the journal review was to search for the keyword "diabetes mellitus herbal medicine" for clinical studies on plant-derived products for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Search terms included “phytotherapy”, “phytochemicals”, “medicinal plant products”, “herbal medicine”, and “diabetes mellitus”. Involving plant-derived compounds and pigmentation as outcome measures were included. In this review article, 30 journals were collected from which the objectives and results of the research in the journal were obtained. The goal is as an alternative management treatment to control blood sugar levels. For some of the compounds we discuss, among others: Flavonoids, Allicin, Lectins, Alkaloids, Andrographolid, Curcumin, Cinnamaldehyde, peptides, Phenolics, Tannins.

Abstract

Liver damage can occur due to infection, viruses, drug use, and the environment. Paracetamol is a drug that has analgesic and antipyretic effects, but on the other hand the use of paracetamol in excessive doses (15/day) can cause liver damage. This can occur because the process of paracetamol metabolism in the liver forms a reactive metabolite known as N-acetyl-pbenzoquinonemine (NAPQI). The hepatoprotective mechanism can be seen from the ability of Ichnocarpus frutescens to ward off free radicals formed from the process of lipid oxidation due to the reactive metabolite of paracetamol, namely NAPQI. The method used is a literature review which is a systematic, explicit and reproducible method for carrying out identification, evaluation and synthesis of research works and ideas that have been produced by researchers and practitioners. The data base used is National and International Journal Websites such as Google Scholar.

Abstract

Providing information when dispensing medicine is a pharmaceutical service that must follow applicable regulations. The best service makes patients satisfied and loyal to the pharmacy. Many things influence patient satisfaction due to varying patient perceptions regarding the quality of pharmacy services. This study aims to analyze the relationship between providing drug information and patient satisfaction, as well as confounding variables. Cross-sectional research was carried out by distributing Likert scale questionnaires and a checklist of types of drug information provided by pharmaceutical staff at the Indobat Padangsambian Pharmacy. The questionnaire was developed from literature studies and has been tested for validity and reliability. A total of 118 respondents who met the criteria were taken using convenience sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and logistic regression. The chi-square test shows that the type of drug information conveyed by pharmaceutical staff is not related to patient satisfaction at the Indobat Padangsambian Pharmacy (p-value 0.580, CI 95%). All variables that are thought to be confounding variables do not have an independent effect on the dependent variable. However, it is known that occupation (health workers and non-health workers) and the patient's proximity to pharmaceutical workers interact and influence patient satisfaction. Pharmacy personnel should provide drug information according to regulations. To make patients satisfied and loyal to the pharmacy, pharmaceutical staff must pay attention to the patient's work background and personal relationship with the patient when providing drug information.

Abstract

Peel-off gel masks made from extracts of banana stem (Musa paradisiaca L.) and widuri flower (Calotropis gigantea L.) are natural cosmetic products that contain flavonoids, a secondary metabolite that acts as an antioxidant. The evaluation by consumers is important to understand the level of product acceptance and preference in the market. This study aims to evaluate consumer acceptance of peel-off gel masks made from banana stem and widuri flower extracts, using a quantitative descriptive survey. The sample was collected using an accidental sampling technique from panelists aged between 20 and 40 years old at Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The survey was conducted through a Google Form that contained questions about consumer preferences (hedonic test) for aroma, viscosity, texture, color, stickiness, and overall product. A total of 40 panelists participated in the hedonic test, while the irritation test was conducted on 9 panelists to observe the possibility of redness or itching reactions on the skin after use. The banana stems peel-off gel mask scored 21.1 in the hedonic test, while the widuri flower peel-off gel mask scored 20.3. The results indicate that the banana stem peel-off gel mask was accepted by 84.4% of the participants in the hedonic test, while the widuri flower peel-off gel mask was accepted by 81.5% of the participants. The irritation test results indicate that neither type of peel-off gel mask caused any irritation after use. Panelists preferred the banana stem peel-off gel mask over the widuri flower peel-off gel mask, with a score of 21.1 and a percentage of 84.4%. Both types of peel-off gel masks are safe to use.
