Abstract

In the past, new mothers were able to consult with their mothers about parenting and health issues. When they are married, many of them live not at home with their mothers. When they need information about childcare and health problems, they switch to using online information sources (Facebook, Instagram, the Health page, and WhatsApp group). This study explores how new mothers in Surabaya use online platforms to search for helpful information related to health during pandemic COVID-19. This study used a qualitative virtual ethnographic method by collecting data through interviews, FGDs, and participating in several online media platforms, including Facebook group Room for Children; id.theAsianparent.com; Instagram account @ruangmom, @kenapaharusvaksin, @obesitas, and WhatsApp “Kulwapp” group. The results reveal that new mothers prefer to enroll in Facebook private groups and only women members with open identities. While on Instagram, they prefer to communicate through questions and answer forums. The Health page that is the primary reference is id.theAsianparent.com. Meanwhile, involvement in the Kulwapp WhatsApp group is for convenience and safety to discuss issues surrounding sexual organs. The shifting information-seeking of new mothers to online platforms because of more theoretical and medically-based health information and experiences need.

Abstract

As an effort to control and handle COVID-19, the government has issued a school from home (SFH) policy. This policy has forced children to stay at home and carry out learning using digital media. This situation has an impact on increasing the use of digital media and the involvement of parents in children's learning significantly. This study explores the use of digital media in children in Surabaya during the pandemic period and how parents can assist the use of these media. This research uses qualitative methods with in-depth interview techniques. Researchers distributed questionnaires about the use of digital media to 66 parents, and nine parents stated that they were willing to become informants. The results show that in addition to a significant increase in the time to use digital media during the pandemic, the pandemic has also changed the parental assistance and supervision of children. Before the pandemic, the assistance model was carried out more with technical restrictions, in the form of time restrictions, content access, application choices, and the number of data packages (restrictive mediation). However, during a pandemic, the mentoring model was carried out with active mediation through discussions and critical thinking, active together with devices, close surveillance, and monitoring on applications and post online activities (active mediation, co-using, supervision, monitoring). One of the pandemic's positive impacts is the opening of discussion spaces between parents and children, the opportunity to use gadgets together, and opportunities for children and parents to learn digital skills.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how to manage the privacy management by Instagram users. Disclosure of personal information on Instagram is a researcher's power to find out how Instagram users, especially early adults, manage privacy on social media, especially Instagram. This study uses the Communication Privacy Management theory developed by Sandra Petronio (2002), which states that everyone has a decision-making system regarding what information he thinks deserves to be shared with the public and which one should be kept for oneself. By using a case study research method in early adulthood in Surabaya using Instagram through interview and observation techniques, 7 informants were obtained in this study. The results obtained indicate that privacy management carried out by early Surabaya adults is in the form of providing information about self-identity such as name, age, year of birth, location, and profession written in the Bio account. In managing the privacy management of Instagram users, it also goes through the stage of private boundaries between public information that can be shared and which cannot be shared. Users also have control over the accounts they have which are intended so that they are not misused by irresponsible people. In addition, there are Instagram users who carry out management dialectics by thinking carefully about what will be shared on their respective Instagram accounts.
