Abstract

This article aims to analyze the application of the principles of Islamic moderation (wasatiyyah) in addressing the challenges of identity politics, particularly in mitigating social polarization based on religion and ideology. The study employs a qualitative approach with data collection through literature review. The findings show that the values of Islamic moderation, such as balance, social justice, and compassion, play a significant role in creating inclusive and peaceful politics. The principles of wasatiyyah promote dialogue between groups, prevent identity-based conflicts in Indonesia, and establish fair and harmonious political policies. These findings also confirm that the implementation of Islamic moderation values can strengthen social and political stability in diverse societies. This research contributes to the development of theories and practices in politics based on the values of religious moderation and offers new perspectives for formulating strategies to address political polarization in multicultural societies.

Abstract

This paper will discuss online media sites implementing religious moderation campaigns in Indonesia. The case study in this paper is the online media Harakatuna.com. The research method is qualitative, collecting data through virtual ethnography or online observations of the Harakatuna.com media page and Harakatuna Media's Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook social media accounts. This research found that it is not appropriate if the religious moderation campaign has only been carried out through conventional methods such as seminars, recitations, and workshops. Therefore, Harakatuna.com is present as a campaign agent for religious moderation by taking a role in social media. Consequently, Harakatuna.com carries out counter-narrative radicalism by introducing peaceful religious moderation in Indonesia with digital methods such as webinars, scientific publications, and opinion writing. Furthermore, Harakatuna.com also carries out a counter-ideological role against the Khilafahism ideology that Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) echoes. Harakatuna.com carries out the counter-ideology through the Pancasila ideology campaign as the foundation of the nation and state by the values of religious teachings, including Islam. The roles carried out by Harakatuna.com are the actualization of the concept of a Cyber Islamic Environment, a new virtual world environment that can be used for the benefit of Muslims, one of which is the delivery of messages of religious moderation.

Abstract

Sociological studies on religion have predominantly focused on macro-sociological approaches, emphasizing structural-functional aspects or conflicts. Consequently, these studies often center on religious movements or organizations and their roles in religious life, neglecting the dynamics of social interaction in everyday religious practices. Such dynamics illustrate how individuals and groups actively shape their religious experiences. However, a different perspective has been offered by Christopher M. Donnelly and Bradley R.E. Wright, who examine religion using a micro-sociological approach, specifically symbolic interactionism. Their study focuses on the dynamics of interruptions during Christian worship services and how congregants respond to such disturbances to uphold the proper conduct of worship. These responses aim to maintain a “self-image” and safeguard the church's reputation, as conceptualized by Erving Goffman. This review aims to inspire similar explorations in other religious contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the study of religion and radicalism in the realm that focuses on religion as conflict resolution and peacebuilding in an effort to ward off radicalism. This research method is qualitative in nature to describe and systematically interpret the facts of radicalism, using relevant literature study methods, which examine library sources such as research reports (thesis, journals), books and other supporting data related to the topic of religious radicalism, in addition to a descriptive analysis approach that places more emphasis on reviews related to the theme that has been determined and then described according to the formulation, and the results are summarized briefly and clearly. The discussion of this research includes the understanding of religious radicalism, indications and implications of radicalism, and religion as conflict resolution and peace. This study concludes that radicalism is an understanding that requires major changes and reforms by using violence. So there is a ned for conflict resolution to overcome or prevent the occurrence of radicalism, namely the concept of a religion of peace that presents the concept of inter-faith dialogue.

Abstract

Poverty is a social reality in the dynamics of human life in the world. This social reality is also part of the Church's concern. The Church pays attention, cares, and conveys its teachings about poverty and ways to overcome it through its dynamic structure, which includes Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium. This study is literature research, with Indonesian contextualization. By textual analysis, this paper shows that in reflecting on various realities related to poverty, especially by using the scalpel of Theology of Liberation, the Church has concluded that poverty, especially structural poverty, is the fruit of social sin. Social sin is an individual sin built in such a way with various kinds of conditioning to become a massive structure. This study recommends the need for personal and communal repentance to destroy this structure of sin and, at the same time, lift people out of structural poverty.

Abstract

This study examines and highlights the relevance of Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum in addressing injustice within the context of environmental degradation. The researcher argues that these documents provide profound moral perspectives that frame environmental issues not merely as ecological challenges but as manifestations of injustice affecting humanity as a whole. A qualitative approach was employed, combining descriptive qualitative and comparative methods. The study involves an in-depth exploration of Pope Francis's thoughts on justice in Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum, utilizing literature reviews of Church documents and the Pope's personal history. The findings reveal that Pope Francis integrates social and ecological justice within a framework of integral ecology, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humanity and creation. Drawing from John Rawls's distributive justice and Brian Baxter's ecological justice theories, the study explores how these perspectives are reflected in the papal encyclicals. While Rawls focuses on the fair distribution of rights and duties within social institutions, Baxter extends justice to non-human entities. Pope Francis synthesizes these ideas, advocating for social inclusion and ecological stewardship as responses to exploitation and inequality. The study underscores the holistic approach of Pope Francis, where justice encompasses the dignity of the marginalized and the protection of the environment. His teachings challenge technocratic paradigms and call for collective responsibility to create a more just and sustainable world. By bridging social and ecological concerns, Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum offer critical insights for addressing environmental degradation as an issue of moral and social justice.

Abstract

This qualitative research explores the theme of hatred, which has become a new interdisciplinary field called hate studies and which still requires academic contributions from different disciplines. The author uses the perspective of religious studies as well as peace and conflict studies, in which the phenomenon of hatred is examined in a descriptive-comparative way from two Islamic movement figures, namely Bediüzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960) in Turkey and K. H. Ahmad Dahlan (1686-1923) in Indonesia. Comparison of thoughts and movements of these two Islamic figures is significant within the framework of ‘Muhammadiyah’. Muhammadiyah is part of the nation’s strength that has been actively involved in national political movement and in the nation-building process through “Amar Ma'ruf  Nahi Munkar” preaching since 1912 in Indonesia. Ahmad Dahlan's progressive thoughts were confronted with hate incidents from religious and community leaders because they were considered contradictory to the Islamic tradition and religion. This article compares the thoughts of Said Nursi and Ahmad Dahlan in how hatred was transformed into nonviolent practices. It shows a different perspective in criticising as well as complementing various nonviolent ways and peacebuilding movements today. This perspective offers contribution to the Islamic movements and the Muhammadiyah in responding to the challenges of plurality, nonviolence, and peace in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the concept of religious tolerance in the history of Islamic civilization. This study uses a qualitative approach by applying analytical descriptive methods. The results and discussion in this study show that the dynamics of religious tolerance in the history of Islamic civilization cannot be separated from the understanding of Muslims of the concept of tolerance and inter-religious relations sourced from the Qur'an and the instructions of the Prophet Muhammad, as reflected in the Charter of Medina, the Pact of Umar, the birth of Comparative Religion, the concept of Ahl Al-Dhimma, to the Caliphate system that regulates tolerance and religious freedom. The study concludes that the concept of religious tolerance in Islamic teachings has been realized in the historical reality of Islamic civilization.
