Abstract

This study, entitled “An Analysis of Abraham Maslow's Humanistic Psychology in the Character Ale in Brian Khrisna's Novel Seporsi Mie Ayam Sebelum Mati,” aims to identify the forms of need fulfillment carried out by the main character in accordance with Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology theory. Maslow's hierarchy of needs includes physiological and psychological needs. Physiological needs include food and drink, clothing, shelter, rest, and sexual needs. Psychological needs include the need for safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The method employed in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, aimed at understanding and describing the phenomenon in depth. The research data sources comprise the dialogues, sentences, phrases, and words of the main character found in the novel Seporsi Mie Ayam Sebelum Mati, published by Gramedia Widiasarana Indonesia (Grasindo) in 2025. The researcher acted as the primary instrument, while data collection was conducted using the read-and-record technique. Based on an analysis of Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology theory, 30 related data points were identified, indicating that the character Ale made various efforts to fulfill his hierarchy of needs. However, not all of these needs could be fulfilled, particularly the needs for clothing, rest, and sex. Meanwhile, other needs were gradually fulfilled as the story progressed.

Abstract

This article discusses the personality of Wayan in the drama "Bila Malam Bertambah Malam" by Putu Wijaya using a literary psychology approach based on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques in the form of text analysis and literature study. The main data is in the form of dialogues that reflect Wayan's personality. The results of the analysis show that Wayan's personality structure is dominated by the id aspect, which reflects his desire to fight the injustice of the caste system and regain the love of Gusti Biang. The dynamics of Wayan's personality are influenced by his interactions with other characters and the conflicting instincts of life and death. The anxiety he experiences is largely caused by social pressure symbolized by the character of Gusti Biang. In facing conflict, Wayan relies on defense mechanisms such as aggression, rationalization, and regression, which help convey his anxiety and maintain emotional stability. This study provides new insights into the relationship between character personality and social context in literary works. Abstract

This study developed and validated a digital multimodal student worksheet that integrates Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and the PISA reading literacy framework for Indonesian middle school reading instruction. Although HOTS and literacy outcomes are emphasized in curriculum policy, teachers still have limited access to classroom-ready worksheets that systematically operationalize PISA cognitive processes (locating information, understanding, and evaluating/reflecting) within a single coherent learning tool. Addressing this gap, the study employed a Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model to design an LKPD that maps national competencies to PISA-oriented reading tasks supported by multimodal texts (e.g., infographics and charts). The product was reviewed by expert validators and piloted with seventh-grade students in a classroom setting. Validation results indicated that the LKPD met high standards of didactic, constructional, and technical quality and that the accompanying assessment items were appropriate for eliciting higher-order reading responses. The try-out data further showed that the LKPD can function diagnostically by revealing students’ recurring challenges in inferential comprehension and information integration, while also supporting engagement with evaluative and reflective prompts through multimodal task design. Overall, the findings suggest that the developed LKPD is a valid and feasible tool for implementing HOTS-oriented, PISA-aligned reading activities and for informing instructional decisions based on students’ domain-specific reading profiles. Future studies should examine broader implementation across diverse school contexts and evaluate learning impact over sustained use.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fading of oral traditions amid modernization, particularly the mantras of the Pandeglang community, which have been viewed solely as ritual texts without literary value. The main problem this research addresses is how the representation of cultural values, power relations, and ideology is manifested in mantras, and how these texts can serve as a medium for critical literacy in secondary education. The purpose of this research is to uncover the linguistic structures, discursive practices, and social contexts that shape the discourse of mantras, while also proposing their use in strengthening cultural literacy in schools. The research uses a critical constructivist paradigm with an interpretive, qualitative approach, drawing on Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis model and discourse ethnography. Data in the form of 11 Sundanese-Banten mantra texts were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation. The analysis shows that mantras function not only as spiritual means but also as ideological discourses that reproduce the moral, spiritual, and social values of the Pandeglang community. Socially, mantras become a cultural literacy practice that strengthens local identity and power relations. At the same time, pedagogically, they have the potential to become a source of critical literacy learning in high schools. The research conclusion confirms that mantras are performative texts that contain educational, spiritual, and ideological power—a form of local literacy that remains relevant for fostering reflective awareness and cultural identity among the younger generation.

Abstract

The low interest in reading and students' appreciation of poetry at the high school level is an essential issue in learning literature at school. Poetry material is considered abstract and non-contextual, which makes it difficult for students to understand and appreciate its content and values. This research aims to create an anthology of thematic poetry based on traditional Sundanese Tatar cuisine that pays attention to aesthetic values, poetic language, and cultural content relevant to high school students' psychological and social development. The method used is research-based creation research with a qualitative approach. Data was obtained through observation, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of the creative process and the results of poetry products. The study results show that poems that raise local culinary themes can increase students' attraction and emotional involvement with literary texts. The poetic language that uses everyday diction and sensory imagery has been proven to facilitate understanding while strengthening students' aesthetic experiences. In addition, students show a greater interest in exploring local culture through poetry, which has a positive impact on increasing literary appreciation and meaning. Thus, the creation of this culinary-based poetry anthology is not only a creative solution to students' low interest in poetry but also contributes to the preservation of local culture and the development of literary teaching materials that are communicative, contextual, and support meaningful learning.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low motivation and ability of junior high school students to write fantasy texts, which require a high degree of imagination and narrative skills. Students struggle to express their ideas, develop a plot, and write coherently, while teachers' teaching methods tend to be conventional and lack interactivity. This study aims to analyze the need for gamification in fantasy writing instruction to enhance students' motivation, creativity, and writing skills. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a needs analysis approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires involving 29 students and two Indonesian language teachers. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that most students experienced difficulties in developing ideas and had relatively low writing motivation, despite demonstrating a high level of imaginative interest in the world and characters of fantasy. These findings underscore the need for instructional materials that provide structured support and offer engaging learning experiences as a foundation for designing gamification-based fantasy text instructional materials in subsequent development stages.

Abstract

This study is initiated due to the limited review-writing proficiency demonstrated by junior high school students, which remains inconsistent with the critical and evaluative thinking competencies emphasized in Indonesian language learning. This issue is associated with the predominance of less collaborative instructional approaches and the lack of systematic literacy media capable of guiding students in the processes of reflection, idea organization, and critical expression. This study aims to analyze the needs of teachers and students for the development of the GEMAS Literacy Journal based on the Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) model in learning to write reviews in junior high schools. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach in the needs analysis stage as the initial part of the model development. Data were obtained through interviews with three Indonesian language teachers, questionnaires of 37 eighth-grade students, and observation and documentation of learning. Data were analyzed through systematic reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate a gap between the demands of writing review competencies and ongoing learning practices, so teachers and students need media that can integrate group collaboration and literacy reflection in a structured manner. The development of the GEMAS Literacy Journal based on STAD is considered relevant to bridge this need because it is able to combine individual responsibility, teamwork, and reflective guidance in the writing process. Thus, this study confirms the urgency of developing collaborative literacy media as a basis for innovation in learning to write reviews in junior high schools.

Abstract

This study analyzes the short story “Cerita Calon Koruptor” by Galang Gelar Taqwallah as a literary diagnosis of the social pathology of corruption in Indonesia. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a sociological literary approach. The primary data is the text of the short story “Cerita Calon Koruptor,” included in the anthology Merah pada Melati, while the secondary data consists of relevant literature. The analysis technique used is close reading across three stages: text reading, coding, and interpretation. This study found three main findings: corruption is depicted as an aspiration that is inherited and normalized across generations; the crisis of honesty is manifested through moral inversion and horizontal political brutality; and rationalization functions as a psychological mechanism that perpetuates the cycle of corruption. These findings underscore the importance of integrating the social pathology framework, which has been more widely used in sociological studies, into Indonesian literary studies as a more comprehensive analytical perspective compared to partial satirical or sociological approaches, and highlight the potential of short stories on corruption as teaching materials to build critical awareness of the normalization of corrupt values.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze students' difficulties in writing short stories and formulate strategic solutions to bridge the gap between language skill demands and students' low literacy levels. Methods: This descriptive research with a qualitative approach involved 35 eleventh-grade students at SMAN 16 Bandung. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires, followed by systematic analysis including data organization, specific data grouping, narrative description of student constraints, and drawing conclusions. Findings: The findings reveal that the primary root of students' difficulties in writing fiction lies in their low reading motivation. Specifically, empirical data shows that nearly 90% of the respondents experienced a deadlock in determining ideas and developing concepts. This lack of reading motivation directly results in limited vocabulary mastery, static plot development, and instances of plagiarism due to low independent imagination. Research Implications: These results provide crucial implications for pedagogical practices, urging educators to integrate innovative approaches. Solutions include utilizing social media inspirational stories as idea triggers, developing digital teaching materials, and implementing interactive learning methods combined with reward systems to establish a conducive learning environment. Originality: The originality of this study lies in conceptualizing the transition of social media typically viewed as a cause of low literacy into a strategic production modality for literary works. Rooted in the empirical finding of an 88% conceptual deadlock rate among students, this research offers a novel, evidence-based framework that redirects casual digital consumption toward bridging academic writing demands.
