Abstract

The elderly experience a decline in immune function, making them susceptible to dental and oral diseases, one of which is gum bleeding. Improper tooth brushing techniques can cause gum bleeding because brushing in the wrong direction can make the gums bleed easily and leave food residues uncleaned. Problem: The high percentage of gum bleeding during tooth brushing in the elderly at the Posyandu Lansia Kampung Mustika Baru Ngagel Surabaya in 2024. On average, the elderly have poor tooth brushing techniques. Objective: To analyze the relationship between tooth brushing methods and gum bleeding in the elderly at the Posyandu Lansia Kampung Mustika Baru Ngagel Surabaya in 2024. Research Method: This research is an analytical cross-sectional study. Sampling was done using purposive sampling with a sample of 36 elderly individuals. The data collection instruments used were observation sheets to measure tooth brushing methods and examination sheets to identify gum bleeding. The analysis technique used was the Chi-square test. Research Results: On average, the elderly's tooth brushing methods, after observation, were categorized as poor. There is a significant relationship between tooth brushing methods and gum bleeding in the elderly at the Posyandu Lansia Kampung Mustika Baru Ngagel Surabaya, with an asymp.sig (α) value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The better the elderly brush their teeth, the less likely they are to experience gum bleeding, thereby reducing the risk of gum bleeding

Abstract

ABSTRACT School-age children aged between 6-12 years are one of the groups most vulnerable to experiencing dental and oral health problems. In school-age children, consuming sticky foods tends to stick to their teeth and can cause dental problems. Debris is food waste that contains bacteria. Different from plaque and white material, debris is easier to clean. Chewing fibrous foods is a natural way to control plaque or debris. Fibrous and watery foods such as pineapple and jicama fruit can clean the surface of the teeth by chewing them. because these fruits have the ability to clean teeth which have self-cleaning capabilities. Research Objective: This study aims to determine the difference in the effectiveness of chewing pineapple and jicama fruit on reducing the debris index in class V students at SDN Pagerwojo Sidoarjo. Method: The type of research carried out was Quasi Experimental with a pretest and posttest design. The subjects of this research consisted of 86 class V students at SDN Pagerwojo. The data collection method uses a debris index inspection sheet by making direct observations of respondents. The data analysis technique used is the Shapiro-Wilk test if the data is normally distributed, if the data is not normally distributed using the Wilcoxson test. Results: The results of the research that has been carried out can be concluded that there is a difference in the effectiveness of chewing pineapple and jicama fruit in reducing index debris, that chewing jicama fruit is more effective in reducing index debris than chewing pineapple fruit.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental and oral health issues remain a global challenge, with rising dental caries cases, particularly in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and Indonesia, where 57.6% of the population is affected. Among Indonesian children aged 3-9, caries and toothache are prevalent, highlighting the need for early plaque detection and targeted interventions. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of disclosing solution gel formulated from Karamunting fruit (Melastoma malabathricum L.) as a dental plaque identifier in children attending the Special Education School under the Surabaya Foundation for Children with Disabilities. Methods: This study utilized a quasi-experimental design using a post-test with a control group framework. A total of 24 respondents were selected through random sampling and divided into four groups. The first three groups were given Karamunting fruit gel at concentrations of 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5% respectively, while the fourth group received a chemically-based disclosing solution as the control. This design allowed for a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of the natural and chemical formulations in detecting dental plaque. Results: The result of the analysis, conducted by using Kruskal-Wallis revealed a p-value of 0.004 (<0.05) indicating a statistically significant effectiveness among Karamunting gel concentrations of 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5% when compared to chemically-based disclosing solution. These findings demonstrate that Karamunting gel is effective in identifying dental plaque, with its efficacy varying significantly according to the concentration used. Conclusion: The disclosing solution gel derived from Karamunting fruit (Melastoma malabathricum L.) showed a potential as an effective alternative for dental plaque notification.

MCH which is a form of Puskesmas main activity is not only tasked with recording or knowing early all abnormalities or cases or complaints found in hard tissue and soft tissue in the oral cavity of pregnant women, but MCH also provides referral efforts to the Dental and Oral Health room for oral health care which involves the role of dentists and dental nurses. This community service aims to increase the knowledge of dental nurses in supporting integrated ANC at the Lamongan Regency Health Centre, various factors that affect the performance of dental nurses in the implementation of integrated ANC. From the results of the research, a fik performance model was found and can be taken into consideration by dental nurses in supporting the implementation of integrated ANC at the Puskesmas. The method used was to provide training for dental nurses working at Puskesmas in the Lamongan District Health Office working area, using lecture and discussion methods and questions and answers. The targets and outcomes achieved in this service are: 1) Increased knowledge of dental nurses about Ante Natal Care (ANC) and dental and oral diseases as well as systemic diseases related to pregnancy in increasing K1 visits of pregnant women at Puskesmas. This knowledge is expected to increase the visits of pregnant women to the dental clinic of the health centre. 2) Final report and article that will be included as a scientific publication in an accredited journal after the service. 3) Obtaining Haki for this module and community service. After this activity is completed, dental nurses can make efforts to increase integrated ANC visits at the Puskesmas where they work, which so far have not reached the target of visiting pregnant women in the dental clinic (Integrated ANC) not 100% so that the oral health status of pregnant women becomes better

Abstract

Oral health is an important aspect of comprehensive health and plays a significant role in children's growth. If disturbed, this condition can affect children's overall development and physical health, as well as reduce their quality of life. Dental caries in early childhood is a major concern because it reflects the effectiveness of dental health maintenance efforts. The problem in this study is the high percentage of dental caries in group B students at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten, which is likely caused by a lack of knowledge about dental caries, frequent consumption of cariogenic foods, minimal motivation, and irregular access to health services, especially dental health services, at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using the Dental Coloring Book media on changes in knowledge about dental caries among Group B students at Al Barokah Kindergarten in Blega sub-district, Bangkalan district. This research is a quantitative study with a pre-experimental design of the one-group pretest-posttest type, in which a pretest will be given before the intervention and a posttest after the intervention. This study involved 30 respondents from group B of Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan kindergarten. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon test, with a result of sig = 0.000 < 0.05. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, indicating that counselling using the Dental Coloring Book medium was effective in improving the knowledge of Group B students at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten in 2025.

Data were collected using questionnaires administered before and after the education session. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test. The results of the study showed a significant difference in the average knowledge score before the intervention, which was 58.47 ± 9.770, and increased to 84.44 ± 6.947 after the pop-up book intervention (ρ=0.000). Conclusion: there was a difference in dental health knowledge before and after the intervention using pop-up books.
