Abstract

Abstract

Agricultural extension officers play a crucial role in increasing knowledge and promoting the adoption of innovations in organic fertilizers among farmers. As educators, innovators, and motivators, agricultural extension officers play a crucial role in promoting the adoption of organic fertilizers among farmers. This study was conducted in the village of Ulapato B from August to October 2024, spanning a period of three months. The objectives of this research are: (1) to analyze the level of adoption of organic fertilizers in corn cultivation during the decision-making process related to innovation among corn farmers, and (2) to examine the diversity of farmers' perceptions regarding the role of agricultural extension officers in the process of adopting organic fertilizer innovations. Primary data were collected through structured interviews with a sample of 77 corn farmers. Data analysis employed frequency distribution and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Frequency distribution was used to categorize the raw data into specific groups for ease of interpretation. At the same time, ANOVA was applied to determine significant differences in farmers' perceptions of the roles of extension officers, namely as educators, innovators, and motivators, based on comparisons of group means. The findings revealed that maize farmers in Ulapato B Village still exhibit low interest in adopting organic fertilizer. The role of extension officers as educators and motivators was perceived positively and contributed significantly to the adoption process. However, their role as innovators was perceived as less effective, particularly in delivering innovations and training related to new technology in organic fertilizer application.

Abstract

Organic farming is crucial for the sustainability of coastal ecosystems, yet its adoption in Bone Bolango Regency remains low due to suboptimal extension strategies. This study employs a mixed methods approach aimed at: (1) identifying priority materials for farmers in Bone Bolango; (2) analyzing extension need gaps; and (3) formulating participatory extension strategies to accelerate the adoption of organic farming. Data were collected through a survey of 366 farmers and in-depth interviews with 20 key informants. The analysis employed the Rank Discrepancy Score (RDS) to measure gap needs and thematic analysis for qualitative data. Results indicate that farmers prioritize technical materials, specifically pest and disease control (RDS = 4.21) and organic fertilization (RDS = 3.87), while institutional aspects are considered less urgent. The Wilcoxon test confirmed a significant gap (p < 0.001) between the importance of materials and farmers’ current understanding. This study recommends reorienting extension strategies to be more participatory and focused on practical technical solutions to enhance organic farming adoption in coastal areas.

Abstract

Gorontalo Province is one of the largest corn-producing provinces on the island of Sulawesi. However, the welfare of corn farmers in Gorontalo is not yet fully guaranteed. This is because the majority of corn farmers in Gorontalo are small farmers who own less than 1 hectare of land. Limited income from corn farming has encouraged farmers to develop survival strategies through income diversification. This study was conducted to identify the forms of alternative income diversification carried out by corn farmers in Gorontalo and to analyze the relationship between alternative income and the increase in total household income of corn farmers in Gorontalo. This study was conducted in Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province, with a sample size of 186 corn farmers from the total number of corn farmers in Bone Bolango Regency. Sampling was conducted using accidental sampling techniques and quantitative descriptive research methods. The results showed that most corn farmers in Bone Bolango Regency had alternative on-farm jobs, namely chili and coconut farming. As for off-farm jobs, they included bentor services, carpentry, and kiosks. In this case, there were different patterns of relationships between socioeconomic factors and the two forms of income diversification. Agricultural diversification is significantly influenced by institutional factors, particularly active participation in farmer groups, while non-agricultural diversification is influenced by household economic factors, namely the number of family dependents. Therefore, a differentiation strategy is needed in farmer empowerment programs (strengthening agricultural institutional capacity) and an approach that focuses on household economic development in off-farm diversification.

Abstract

This community service project aimed to enhance the nutritional quality of processed food products by diversifying those made from sorghum. In Gorontalo, sorghum cultivation and processing into ready-to-eat food products were well-established. Active community participation in developing sorghum commodities was vital, prompting initiatives to process sorghum into widely recognized products. During training sessions, it was emphasized that all team members, from workers to management, needed to be knowledgeable and skilled in implementing Standard Sanitation Operational Procedures (SSOP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to improve cleanliness and sanitation. The participants, primarily mothers from West Tulabolo Village, produced local food items from sorghum seeds, such as sorghum drinks, sorba, onde-onde, and fried bananas. While sorghum seeds were the main ingredient for sorghum drinks and sorba, sorghum flour was used for onde-onde and fried bananas. The program concluded with an evaluation of participants' acceptance of the products, showing high ratings of very much liked for nearly all aspects, including taste, texture, aroma, and color. This training was intended to guide the community in exploring entrepreneurial opportunities and fostering the development of village-based small and medium enterprises (UKM Desa).

Abstract

Abstract

Biochar application has been evaluated for various types of soil including sand, sandy loam, and clay loam such as soil conditions in Gorontalo Province. This community service aims to provide information related to the benefits of corn cob waste and increase the knowledge and insight of the Ulapato B Village community regarding the manufacture of biochar as a soil conditioner. This community service consists of several activities, namely counseling, direct practice related to the manufacture of biochar, assistance to the community, and monitoring and evaluation. Based on the results of the counseling that has been carried out, it has been able to increase the knowledge and insight of the Ulapato B community regarding the manufacture of biochar using corn cob waste as a raw material. In addition, this activity also increases the community's understanding of the benefits of corn cob waste which they initially only considered as goods that had no ecological information value. Judging from the evaluation stage that was carried out, the responses of the community service participants were positive for each material presented. The material for the stages of making biochar from corn cobs produced the highest percentage, reaching 87.5% and the lowest for the material on Data interpretation related to land area, corn production and the amount of cob waste per year of corn production specifically for data in Gorontalo Province and Indonesia in general, with a percentage of only 15%. This means that community service participants are more interested in direct demonstrations compared to data-based materials.
