Abstract

Abstract

Banana peels are often considered waste despite being rich in bioactive compounds with potential as natural antioxidants. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of an ethanol extract combination of Cavendis banana peel (Musa acuminata) and Kepok banana peel (Musa paradisiaca) using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The extraction process was conducted using 96% ethanol maceration, yielding an extraction efficiency of 9.13%. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids/terpenoids in the extract. Antioxidant activity was assessed through the DPPH method, resulting in an IC50 value of 6.47 ppm and an AAI value of 5.40, classified as very strong antioxidants. These results are comparable to the positive control (Vitamin C), which had an IC50 value of 6.29 ppm and an AAI value of 5.56. The findings suggest that the ethanol extract combination of Cavendis and Kepok banana peels has significant potential as a natural antioxidant source applicable in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Recommendations for future research include optimization of extraction methods, isolation of key active compounds, in vivo testing, and functional product formulation development to maximize the extract's potential.

Abstract

Banana peels, often considered agricultural waste, are rich in bioactive compounds with significant antioxidant potential. This study evaluates the antioxidant activity of a combined ethanol extract from Cavendis (Musa acuminata) and Kepok (Musa paradisiaca) banana peels using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The extraction was performed via maceration with 96% ethanol, yielding 9.13%. Phytochemical analysis identified key compounds including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids/terpenoids, which are known to exhibit antioxidant properties. The extract demonstrated strong radical scavenging activity with an IC50 of 6.47 ppm and an Antioxidant Activity Index (AAI) of 5.40, comparable to Vitamin C (IC50 = 6.29 ppm; AAI = 5.56). These results indicate a synergistic effect from combining the two banana peel varieties, enhancing antioxidant efficacy beyond that reported for individual peels. This study supports the potential use of Cavendis and Kepok banana peel extracts as sustainable natural antioxidants for application in food preservation, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. Future work should focus on optimizing extraction methods, detailed phytochemical profiling, stability assessment, and in vivo validation to advance product development and maximize health benefits.

Abstract

Food additives are often found in every processed food product. However, it is not uncommon for business actors to use prohibited food additives in the form of formaldehyde which is used as a preservative in plywood, foam and so on, but is used to preserve food in the form of dried seafood. Dried sea products in the form of anchovies, squid and rebon itself are one of the foodstuffs that are popular with the public and processed into delicious local food. This research aims to carry out qualitative and organoleptic tests for the formaldehyde content of dried marine products in the form of anchovies, squid and rebon obtained from several traders at Pagesangan Market, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara. Sampling was carried out using random sampling technique. The formalin qualitative test on salted fish samples was carried out by adding 1 ml of Fehling A and Fehling B. A positive test was indicated by the color of the blue solution changing to green and the presence of a brick red precipitate. Apart from that, it is also supported by the results of organoleptic tests which include color, aroma, shape or texture. The total number of samples tested was 15 samples obtained from several different traders, where 7 samples were positive for formalin. This can be seen from the physical characteristics of anchovies, squid and rebon with a bright white and fresh color, the odorless aroma of marine products preserved in salt, and the shape or texture is smoother, more intact and does not break easily compared to the sample. negative for formalin.

Abstract

Background: Malaria infection is a disease with significant mortality, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. The rupture of infected red blood cells will stimulate the role of the immune system, CD4+ T cells will release IFN-γ cytokines that play a role in stimulating the activation of CD8+ T lymphocytes, which play a role in controlling parasitemia. Zinc is known to be involved in T cell signaling that can increase the expression of IFN-γ cytokines that play a role in parasite elimination. Methods: 20 minutes after being infected with P. berghei ANKA, were divided into 4 groups. Group 1-2 were given zinc as therapy with a concentration of 10mg/ml with a dose of 50mg/kgBW and 100mg/kgBW. Group 3 was a negative control (NC) given 0.5% sodium carboxylmethyl cellulose (CMCNa). Group 4 was a positive control treated with dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHP) with a concentration of 187.2 mg/kgBW. Therapy was given for 4 days of observation, and parasitemia was observed every day after 24 hours of the first administration until the 4th day after administration. Results: Significant results were obtained in the parasitemia inhibition analysis after zinc administration on day 3 (p = 0.027) and day 4 (p = 0.001). Based on the results of the analysis, it was shown that zinc has anti-malarial activity that can inhibit the growth of parasitemia in test mice. Conclusion: Zinc as an antimalarial showed effectiveness in reducing parasitemia in BALB/c mice infected with P. berghei ANKA.
