In Indonesia, where different languages co-exist and where English is used as a foreign language, the learners' attitudes and motivational orientation toward English play an important role in formulating effective learning strategies. This article aimed to examine the attitudes of Indonesian students toward learning English as a foreign language and to understand the motivational orientations that result from their attitudes. A secondary objective of this research was to find the appropriate learning strategy that can be used for high school students in Indonesian education based on the result of the research. Fifty high school students in the second grade from sciences and social sciences major were asked to respond to questionnaires that measured their attitudes and orientations. The results indicated positive attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language with a clear instrumental orientation. Hence, the study highlighted that Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) became the appropriate learning strategy. Despite a strong desire to learn English to gain access to international markets, the status of Bahasa remains secure as it is viewed as a symbol of national integration.

Abstract

This study is predicated upon the persistent environmental degradation perpetrated by communities inhabiting the periphery of Batang Gadis National Park (Indonesian: Taman Nasional Batang Gadis [TNBG]). The investigation was undertaken in five villages within the West Panyabungan District, which share a direct boundary with TNBG. The primary objective of this research is to elucidate the impact of da’wah messages and mass media dissemination on the environmental consciousness of the local populace residing near TNBG. Employing a quantitative methodology, the study utilized a structured questionnaire as its principal instrument. The research encompassed a population of 183 individuals, from which a sample of 65 respondents was drawn. Data analysis was conducted using multiple regression techniques and processed through SPSS software. The findings reveal a significant simultaneous influence of da’wah messages and mass media dissemination on the environmental consciousness of the communities neighboring TNBG. However, when assessed individually, it was determined that da’wah messages have a discernible impact on environmental awareness, whereas mass media dissemination does not exhibit a statistically significant effect. To foster heightened environmental consciousness among the local populace, intensifying environmental preservation campaigns through da’wah activities in collaboration with religious leaders is recommended.

In this study, students worked in groups to deliver presentations. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of learning English in presentation material by describing students' motivation, anxiety, and experiences. The researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. The participants of the study were all first-semester students at the Politeknik Negeri Banjarmasin who voluntarily responded to the questionnaire (79 students) and seven students who would represent those to be interviewed. The research instruments are a fifty-item question through Google Form and an interview guide for data triangulation. The results of this study showed that, in general, the students perceived group presentation positively. They have a very positive perception of motivation and a positive perception of presentation experience, although they are also anxious when preparing and delivering the presentation. Speaking anxiety of students was influenced by internal factors such as nervousness, which can interfere with supporting devices and situations in the classroom. All in all, students perceived positively the implementation of the presentation project to finish the presentation. The result of this research study is expected to be used in teaching and learning in the field of learning English as a foreign language and to encourage students to be more motivated and less anxious so that their speaking performance is better.

Abstract

English literacy at early childhood is a crucial foundation for language development, cognitive growth, and academic readiness. TK Desa Bagi 01, despite its high academic achievements, faces several challenges in teaching English, including a busy daily schedule, limited learning time, and restricted access to interactive learning media. This community service program was designed to address these challenges by introducing English literacy to young learners in a creative and engaging manner while simultaneously enhancing teachers’ skills in employing interactive and contextually relevant teaching media. The program employed several methods: observation of current teaching practices, planning and development of creative learning media such as flashcards, posters, storybooks, and puppets, implementation of learning activities through play-based approaches, and evaluation of student and teacher outcomes. The results indicate a significant increase in student enthusiasm, active participation, and comprehension of basic English vocabulary. Teachers also demonstrated improved creativity and confidence in using various teaching media to support literacy learning. This program shows that English literacy can be effectively fostered in early childhood using simple, locally relevant, and sustainable media. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of teacher development in enhancing the quality of English learning in rural school contexts. Overall, the initiative provides a practical model for integrating interactive English literacy education in early childhood settings with long-term potential for rural education improvement.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how stereotypes occur in cross-cultural communication between PMM and PNM students and to examine their impacts on students’ achievement and interaction. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires to capture both behavioral and perceptual aspects of communication. The findings reveal several key points. First, initial interactions shaped expectations and assumptions about each other’s behavior and culture. Second, stereotypes often caused miscommunication, misunderstandings, and confusion in interpreting messages. Third, they influenced group dynamics, including cooperation, participation, and conflict resolution. Fourth, students’ perceptions of identity, both personal and cultural, played a role in shaping their interactions. Fifth, the study identified both positive and negative impacts. Positive effects included enhanced Javanese language skills, increased cultural awareness, strengthened group identity, and cognitive shortcuts that facilitated understanding of others. Negative effects involved communication gaps, misinterpretation, discrimination, cultural barriers, and language difficulties. Overall, the study highlights that stereotypes in cross-cultural communication are a double-edged sword: while they can provide quick cognitive frameworks for understanding others, they can also impede effective communication and collaboration. These findings emphasize the importance of cultural sensitivity, awareness, and reflective practices in multicultural student interactions to maximize learning and minimize conflicts.
