Abstract

Sonneratia alba or rambai leaves are a plant from East Kalimantan that the community has used for generations as a cold powder. Antioxidants are needed to ward off free radicals, while bacteria are one of the causes of acne. Propolis also shows potential as an antioxidant and antibacterial agent. This research evaluated whether the combination of Sonneratia alba leaves extract and Heterotrigona itama propolis can increase antioxidant and antibacterial activity and whether this combination has synergistic potential. The S. alba leaves and H. itama propolis were macerated using ethanol as the solvent. The antioxidant activity test using the DPPH method with three comparisons of 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 produced IC50 values of 12.669 µg/ml, 32.756 µg/ml, and 19.694 µg/ml, respectively. The IC50 value for ascorbic acid is 12.293 µg/ml. The results show that the combination of S. alba leaves and H. itama propolis ethanol extract has very strong antioxidant activity. The antibacterial activity test against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with three concentrations of 60%, 80%, and 100% showed inhibition zones of 10.5 mm (medium category), 16 mm, and 17.5 mm (strong category), respectively.

Abstract

Free radicals are molecules that are inconsistent and reactive because they have a portion of the electron that does not have a mate. Free radicals in the body that exceed their capacity will result in oxidative stress. Oxidative Stress can induce damage to various instruments in cells, such as carbohydrates, proteins, DNA, and fat. If oxidational stress is not handled properly, then it will cause degenerative disease. Free radicals can be overcome with antioxidant compounds. Dayak onions (Eleutherine americana (L.) Merr) are suspected to contain flavonoids and phenolic substances that can be antioxidants. The study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolites, total phenolic levels, as well as the flavonoids of the water extract and the ethanol extract of Dayak onions (Eleutherine americana (L.) Merr) obtained from Tenggarong Seberang (L3), East Kalimantan. The method used to determine total phenolic levels using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, the determination of total flavonoid levels using the colorimetric method, as well as phytochemical screening tests using the tube method. Results obtained at the total phenolic content of dayak onions water extract 0.45±0.07 mg GAE/g and dayak onions ethanol extract 1.21±02.02 mg GAE/g, as well as the total level of flavonoids in dayak onions aquatic extracts 1.17±0.66 mg QE/g and dayak onions etanol extraction 1.33±0.41 mg QE/g, from such results indicate higher total levels of phenolics and flavanoids found in dayak onions ethanol extracted.

Abstract

The standardization of raw materials from nature is essential before they are made into products. Until now, there is still limited information regarding the standardization of propolis from stingless bees. This research aims to determine the bioactivity with standardized specific and non-specific parameters of ethanol extracts from Homotrigona apicalis and Homotrigona fimbriata propolis. The methods include organoleptic tests, tests for water-soluble and ethanol-soluble compound content, drying shrinkage tests, specific gravity tests, water content tests, metal contamination tests, phytochemical screening, and determining total phenolic and flavonoid content. The free radical scavenging capacity was measured using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method, and antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans, Propionibacterium acnes, Streptococcus mutans, Salmonella typhi, and Escherichia coli was assessed using the agar well diffusion method. The results indicated that the standardization parameters tested on H. apicalis and H. fimbriata propolis met the standard criteria. Both species contain alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, and saponins. Generally, the propolis extracts from these two stingless bees exhibit potential antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. The total phenolic content for H. apicalis was 0.963 ± 0.041 mg GAE/g, while for H. fimbriata, it was 0.345 ± 0.004 mg GAE/g. The total flavonoid content for H. apicalis was 12.066 ± 0.465 mg QE/g, and for H. fimbriata, it was 9.325 ± 0.031 mg QE/g. All these results can be used as a reference for developing products derived from stingless bees.

Abstract

Wounds are a common health issue caused by various types of injuries, burns, or infections. Although several wound healing methods are available, many rely on synthetic chemicals that may have side effects. Therefore, there is a need for safer and more effective alternatives. Piper crocatum leaves and Geniotrigona thoracica propolis are known to contain flavonoid compounds that have the potential to accelerate wound healing naturally. However, limited research has explored the combination of these two substances to enhance wound healing effectiveness. This study aims to provide scientific evidence regarding the potential of the combination of ethyl acetate extract of P. crocatum leaves and G. thoracica propolis as a more effective, safe, and natural alternative for wound healing treatment. The research involved creating wounds on the backs of male rabbits, which were divided into seven groups. Each group received different treatments, including ethyl acetate extract of P. crocatum leaves and G. thoracica propolis, combinations of both (P1-P5), and a positive control (bioplacenton), while the negative control received no treatment. The preparations were applied topically, and wound healing was monitored daily. The results indicate that the combination of ethyl acetate extract of P. crocatum leaves and G. thoracica propolis (1:3) promoted faster wound healing compared to other combination.
