Abstract

Abstract

The absence of a comparative biochemical analysis between stingless bee pollen and Mangifera casturi leaves prevents the optimization of their synergistic potential in diabetes management. This study aims to evaluate the bioactive profiles and compare the antidiabetic mechanisms of these dua natural products. The investigation utilized a systematic literature review by retrieving peer reviewed articles from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The selection process followed the PRISMA 2020 framework to ensure a transparent and reproducible screening of literature. Data analysis involved a comparative thematic synthesis to evaluate the correlation between phytochemical groups and glycemic control. Results demonstrate that both materials share homologous flavonoid compounds that improve insulin sensitivity and mitigate oxidative stress. Stingless bee pollen provides superior pancreatic β cell protection while Mangifera casturi shows higher inhibition of carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes. This study concludes that both materials offer significant antidiabetic efficacy through complementary molecular pathways. These findings provide a scientific foundation for the development of evidence based complementary medicine. Future research should prioritize clinical trials to determine the optimal dosage for human application.

Abstract

Propolis is one of the natural products produced by kelulut bees and is still not widely used. The type of stingless bee that is the prima donna in the community is Heterotrigona itama. This study aims to determine the phytochemical content of the n-hexane fraction of Heterotrigona itama bee propolis collected from Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. The n-hexane fraction was obtained from the methanol extract of H. itama propolis by the liquid-liquid partition method. After obtaining the n-hexane fraction, the research continued with a qualitative phytochemical test to identify the compound and determine total phenolic. Antibacterial activity was determined by the agar well diffusion method with a serial concentration in Escherichia coli bacteria. Qualitative phytochemical analysis in the form of color changes showed that the n-hexane fraction of H. itama propolis contained flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. Based on the results, the total phenolic content of the n-hexane fraction sample was 490 mgGAE/100 g. It caused the n-hexane fraction to have lower phenolic content than the methanol extract (792 mg GAE100 g). Furthermore, this result indicated that the non-polar fraction was not substantial enough to extracted phenolic compounds. It correlated to the antibacterial activity of the n-hexane fraction, which was very weak (2  mm ± 1.5) at  200µg/mL concentration.

Abstract

Burn injuries remain a significant public health concern due to high morbidity and risk of complications. Natural products such as Singkil leaves (Premna corymbosa Rottl. & Willd.), rich in flavonoids, and stingless bee propolis (Heterotrigona itama), recognized for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities, demonstrate potential to enhance wound repair. This study aimed to formulate a topical gel combining both extracts and to evaluate its physicochemical characteristics and in vivo burn wound-healing activity. Three gel formulations with different extract ratios were prepared and assessed for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, and syneresis. Burn wound healing was evaluated using male Wistar rats. Overall, all formulations fulfilled the physicochemical requirements for topical gels and demonstrated satisfactory physical stability. Formula F1 (75% propolis:25% Premna corymbosa) exhibited the lowest viscosity and acceptable spreadability. Formula F2 (50:50) provided the most balanced rheological profile, with the highest spreadability among all formulations. Meanwhile, Formula F3 (25% propolis:75% Premna corymbosa) showed the greatest adhesion and superior burn wound-healing activity, reducing wound diameter by 42.43%, a result statistically comparable to the positive control. These findings suggest that increasing the proportion of Premna corymbosa extract contributed positively to biological activity while maintaining suitable physicochemical characteristics. These findings indicate that the combined extract gel possesses strong potential as a natural topical therapeutic candidate for burn wound management.

Abstract

Worm infections remain a common health issue among elementary school-aged children in Indonesia, especially in environments where the implementation of Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) is not optimal. This community service activity aims to improve knowledge and PHBS behaviors as an effort to prevent worm infections among students at SD Negeri 015 Samarinda Ulu. The activity was carried out using a participatory-educative approach through several stages: coordination with the school, interactive counseling using educational media, hand-washing demonstrations following WHO guidelines, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test. The results showed a significant increase in the students' knowledge levels. Before the activity, most students were in the medium and low knowledge categories, which then significantly increased to 92.8% in the high category after health education was provided. In addition to the knowledge improvement, this activity also encouraged positive behavioral changes, such as the habit of washing hands before meals and after activities, as well as regularly maintaining nail hygiene. Overall, this activity proved effective in raising awareness, shaping attitudes, and strengthening healthy living behaviors from an early age in elementary school children as a preventive measure against ongoing worm infections in the community.
