Abstract

Literary work and movie have their own characteristics even though both have the same storyline. Literary work reveal the story in narrative form while movie, reveal the story through audio and visual.Today many literary works adapted into movie.One of literary works adapted into movie is Twelve Years a Slave. Twelve Years a Slave is a work was written by Solomon Northup which is based on his journey life when he was become slave for twelve years. This work was adapted into movie, in 2013 with the same title. This study aims to find the differences and similarities of both version of literary work and its movie and to identify the process of adapting  of literary work (narrative slave)  into  adaptation work (movie). The method used was document analysis and showcase the screenshot with using the structuralism which focus on the intrinsic elements of the story and comparing it with intrinsic elements on movie adaptation.This data analysis shows that there are many changes that occur in the adaptation work during the adaptation process.That was because the changes of medium and how to deliver the message be adjusted with duration and the existence of other supporting things such as the addition, reduction and improvisation of the scene.

Abstract

Flowers For Algernon, a novel by Daniel Keyes, is one of his most renowned literary works. It had won Nebula and Hugo awards. The story centers on Charlie, a 32-year-old man with a debilitating mindset who undergoes surgery to boost his IQ. The goal of this research is to elucidate the main character's description in Flowers for Algernon. The writer utilized a structural technique to analyze Daniel Keyes' more deeply since this method exposes as precisely, as thoroughly, as precisely, and as deeply as possible the connections and entanglement of all parts and aspects of literary works. The study demonstrates that each human being is born with unique characteristics, abilities, and impairments. Additionally, individuals should embrace who they are and be themselves, even though most of them seek to alter various parts of their lives.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the general patterns of linguistic configuration and socio-pragmatic functions of Indonesian-English code switching. It also explored the communication strategy that the Indonesian elites aim at when they do both IECS and EICS. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis. The data was collected from various speech interactions on TV program. The result shows that the linguistics configuration of Indonesian-English code switching are switch segments such as Noun Phrase (NP), Single Noun, Independent Clause, Verb and Adjective. The combinations of switch points of Indonesia-English code switching mostly occur between NP and HL suffix, between N and NP, between NP and Independent Clause, between V and NP, and Adj and N. In terms of types of code switching are namely; intraclausal (Iracla), Intraphrasal (Iraphra), Intralexical (Iralex), Interclausal and Tag. The socio-pragmatic function of Indonesian-English Code Switching based on the data using Gumperz’s model are interjection or sentence-filler, message qualification, personalization, and morphological adaptation. Furthermore, the communication strategy of code switching by Indonesian Elites is to adjust the message which they convey in order to emphasize the statement, also to attract their interlocutor so that they pay the attention to the speaker.

Abstract

AbstractThe researcher discovered that the second-grade students at SMPN 1 Watopute struggled with vocabulary mastering. The teacher reported that several words were not understood by the students during teaching-learning exercises. They were also unable to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, due to a lack of vocabulary competence. As a result, the researcher advised working with the instructor to fix the problem using the Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) strategy. The research topic was "How can the ESA (Engage, Stimulate, Action) strategy increase students' vocabulary acquisition in the second grade of SMPN2Ranteangin?" This was a classroom action research that included the following steps: basic research, planning, action, observing, analyzing, and reflecting in each cycle. The goal of this study is to help students enhance their vocabulary mastery. This study was divided into two rounds. The first cycle was a failure since only 60.8 percent of the students achieved the required score (75). After the second round, 86.9 percent of the students were able to pass the minimal score, indicating that the research was effective. Furthermore, the students demonstrated behavioral gains. They were more engaged in learning and ready to inquire and answer to the teacher. Consequently, the researcher decided to end the research.Keywords: ESA method; improving; mastery; vocabulary.

Abstract

Comprehension is the main goal of reading. Reading comprehension is an attempt to understand, evaluate, and also recognize the author’s ideas in reading text. A reader needs comprehension to catch the content of message or information from the text. One of the alternative methods to improve the students’ reading comprehension is with Experience Text Relationship method. The purpose of this study is to improve the students’ reading comprehension, by implementing Experience Text Relationship (ETR). The method in this study is  Classroom Action Research (CAR) which has several sequenced procedures including planning, action, observation, and reflection. The technique of data analysis is divided into two namely quantitative which came from the reading tests, and qualitative data which came from the observation sheets. The result of the study shows that the ETR technique is one of the most effective strategies for teaching English especially to improve students’ reading comprehension  because the students had more chance to tell their stories that might be related to the materials that were taught.

Abstract

The Covid-19 had changed the educational system in Indonesia. The students must be survived with the change of educational system. They are required to use the internet-based media and technology during covid-19 pandemic. This study aimed to explore how the students experience of the change of learning system from face to face learning to online learning and finding deep information from the students who life in the rural area. The present study applied qualitative research to explore how the students in Maluku Utara survive in distance learning by examine how their experience in online learning. The result of this study gives several contributions about the how the students experience in online learning in Maluku Utara. The first, in conducting online learning the students must struggle with the condition of network in Maluku Utara. There were some areas that is not supported by the network so the students must go to the area that has a good network. This phenomenon becomes the main problem of the students in having online learning. The second, the process of online learning conducted both synchronous and asynchronous. They use social media as the media of communication, giving information and instruction. The third, most of the students used smartphone as the device in conducting online learning. However, in some school the student who does not have smartphone used I-pad from their school. The last, the students from Maluku Utara were easy to adapt the new system of learning.

Abstract

This research presented the Effect of Reading Wattpad Toward Students’ Reading Comprehension at Second Grade of MAS. Nurul Yaqin Dawi-Dawi. The design of this research was a quasi-experiment by using a non-equivalent control group design. The variable of this research consisted of two variables, they were Wattpad as the independent variable and the students’ reading comprehension as the dependent variable. The sample of this research were the second grade students of IPA 1 and IPA 2 of MAS. Nurul Yaqin Dawi-Dawi. There were 28 students in IPA 1, and there were 29 students in IPA 1. The instrument of this research was the pre-test and post-test. Data collection techniques in this research were giving pre-test and post-test. It was found out that there was an Effect of Reading Wattpad Toward Students’ Reading Comprehension at Second Grade of MAS. Nurul Yaqin Dawi-Dawi. It could be seen from the mean score of post-test (84,11), it was higher than the mean score of pre-test (79,48). The result showed that T-test > T-table (7,117 > 2,052). The alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The N-Gain score of experimental class had the mean (33,2316) < 40%. It means that the Wattpad application was not effective to be used in the learning process in the class.

Abstract

Digital marketing merupakan kegiatan pemasaran ataupun promosi melalui media internet ataupun digital secara online. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini ialah untuk memberikan pemahaman mengenai peran digital marketing dalam upaya meningkatkan penjualan produk UMKM yang berdampak pada kesejahteraan masyarakat di Kecamatan Kolaka, Kabupaten Kolaka, terutama pada Pelaku UMKM yang ada di Kecamata Kolaka. Dikarenakan masih pemula, pemasaran yang dilakukan belum maksimal yaitu menjual produknya kepada para konsumen yang ada di wilayah sekitarnya saja, sehingga belum dapat menarik konsumen secara lebih luas. Hal inilah yang menjadi tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarkat ini, yaitu untuk memberikan pemahaman mengenai digital marketing dalam memasarkan produk Koowe sehingga dapat meningkatkan penjualan produk.

Abstract

Duolingo adalah platform pembelajaran bahasa populer yang telah mendapatkan daya tarik signifikan. Desainnya berfokus pada penguasaan bahasa yang lebih mudah diakses, menarik, dan efektif melalui gamifikasi dan pembelajaran yang dipersonalisasi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis persepsi mahasiswa terhadap Duolingo sebagai alat pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Subyek dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa jurusan non bahasa inggris yang berjumlah 20 orang. Teknik pengumpulannya menggunakan angket, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Kuesioner diberikan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa dan wawancara dilakukan untuk mengetahui jawaban lebih mendalam sehingga peneliti dapat mendeskripsikan dan mempelajari secara maksimal persepsi mahasiswa terhadap aplikasi Duolingo sebagai alat evaluasi. Sedangkan dokumentasi untuk mengumpulkan dan menyimpan informasi tentang data mahasiswa. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa 91,25% mahasiswa tertarik menggunakan aplikasi Duolingo sebagai alat pembelajaran dikarenakan penggunaan yang mudah, tampilan yang menarik, dan pertanyaan yang bervariasi yang membuat mahasiswa ingin menggunakan Duolingo sebagai untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa.

Abstract

The low mastery of students' skills in learning English and the limited application of explicit learning strategies such as DI in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Direct Teaching (DI) strategy in improving the mastery of understanding of grade VII students at State Junior High School 3 Tanggetada. The method used in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages, namely planning, implementing actions, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 18 students who were selected purposively based on their low mastery of understanding. Data collection techniques include insight tests, student and teacher activity observation sheets, and field notes. Data analysis was carried out descriptively quantitatively and qualitatively to assess the development of student learning outcomes and behavior during the learning process. The results of the study indicate that the application of the Direct Teaching strategy can improve students' mastery of understanding and encourage active involvement in the learning process. Students become more confident, motivated, and able to understand understanding in a more structured way.
