Abstract

This systematic review examines the efficacy of WhatsApp in language learning by synthesizing existing literature and identifying key themes, trends, and gaps in research. WhatsApp, a widely used instant messaging application, offers unique opportunities for language learners to engage in authentic language practice and interaction beyond traditional classroom settings. Through a systematic search of electronic databases and manual screening of reference lists, relevant studies published between January 2010 and December 2023 were identified. The findings reveal that WhatsApp is utilized for various language learning purposes, including informal practice, peer interaction, and collaborative learning activities. Positive outcomes associated with WhatsApp use include enhanced speaking proficiency, vocabulary acquisition, and learner engagement. However, challenges such as technical issues and privacy concerns hinder its full potential. Recommendations for future research include longitudinal studies to explore long-term effects, addressing technical barriers, and comparative studies to assess WhatsApp's relative efficacy. Overall, this review contributes to our understanding of WhatsApp's role as a versatile and effective tool in language education, offering insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers.

Abstract

Grammarly is an online tool that helps users improve their writing by correcting errors in grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. With its growing use among students, it is important to understand their perceptions of the tool. This research investigates the perceptions of SMAN 4 Palangka Raya students regarding Grammarly's feedback on their writing skill during the 2024–2025 academic year. Using a descriptive quantitative design, a survey was distributed to 91 students who regularly used Grammarly. The questionnaire gathered data on students' perceptions of Grammarly's feedback features, quality and impact, and overall usage. Analysis was conducted using frequency distributions, percentages, and mean scores in Microsoft Excel. The results show that students have a positive perception of Grammarly, with a mean score of 4.19, highlighting its effectiveness in improving grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Students value its ability to identify errors, suggest vocabulary, and correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Grammarly's feedback not only enhances writing quality but also boosts confidence and motivation. The tool's accessibility and user-friendly interface, even in the free version, further reinforce its positive perception. However, individual factors such as prior writing ability, learning preferences, and technical issues influenced how students perceived its effectiveness.

Abstract

The research investigates the effectiveness of the Reverso online application in improving grammar in narrative text writing among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Palangka Raya. The study compared the improvement in grammar abilities between the experimental group using Reverso and the control group using conventional methods. Data was collected through pre-test and post-tests, focusing on narrative writing abilities. Normality tests showed significant differences, necessitating non-parametric tests for further analysis. The hypothesis testing results indicated a significant enhancement in the experimental group relative to the control group, with a p-value of .000, which is less than the significance threshold of 0.05, or the post-test of class XI IPS 2 as the experiment group was 93.33 and the post-test of control group XI IPA 4 was 81.40. This suggests that the Reverso application had a positive effect on students' grammar improvement in narrative texts. The study concludes that the Reverso online application is effective in enhancing students' grammar in writing narrative texts. Based on the findings, suggestions are made for teachers to integrate similar technological tools in their teaching practices, for students to practice grammar using educational applications regularly.

Abstract

Teachers have essential roles in facilitating ELT, and their attitudes towards the approaches applied will contribute to the success of language learning. The objective of this research was to examine teachers' attitudes towards the implementation of Extramural English (EE) in ELT. One-shot survey research was conducted in rural areas of a regency in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, with 60 high school English teachers participating as the sample. A survey incorporating both closed- and open-ended questions was administered to gather data. The data analysis involved calculating the percentages from the closed-ended responses, followed by a detailed explanation of the teachers' answers to the open-ended questions. The findings indicate that most teachers have integrated Environmental Education (EE) activities throughout all phases of English Language Teaching (ELT). They employ EE, particularly in conjunction with Technology, due to its ability to broaden their knowledge, improve their skills, effectively engage students' interests, and facilitate English learning. Furthermore, the advantages of utilizing EE significantly surpass the associated challenges. Therefore, developing English Language Teaching (ELT) to meet students' English as an additional language (EAL) needs is crucial, as EAL plays a significant role in students' language development. In conclusion, teachers have a positive attitude towards implementing English Education (EE) in English Language Teaching (ELT) since it positively contributes to ELT.

Abstract

The integration of the scientific approach into English Language Teaching (ELT) has played a transformative role in Indonesian education since the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum. This systematic literature review explores how the scientific approach aligns with student-centered learning principles and its pedagogical implications in the Indonesian ELT context from 2013 to 2025. A total of 52 peer-reviewed journal articles indexed in SINTA 1 to 3 and international databases were analyzed using the PRISMA model. The review focuses on the pedagogical strategies, learning outcomes, teacher readiness, and classroom practices associated with the scientific approach. Findings indicate that the scientific approach supports learner autonomy, critical thinking, and communicative competence when implemented with contextual sensitivity and adequate teacher training. However, various challenges persist, including misalignment in assessment, limited resources, and superficial understanding of scientific stages. The paper provides implications for curriculum designers, teacher educators, and policymakers to strengthen scientific pedagogy in Indonesian ELT

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the role of electronic media in enhancing English language learning among high school students in Banjarmasin, Indonesia. The research focused on students’ perceptions and their experiences with digital platforms, apps, and social media. The rapid advancement of technology has made electronic media essential tools in Education, offering students flexible, engaging, and interactive learning opportunities. Despite these benefits, challenges such as limited internet access, insufficient digital skills, and lack of direct teacher interaction were also noted. The findings revealed that students found electronic media motivating and enjoyable, particularly in developing listening and speaking skills. They appreciated the easy access to learning materials and the flexibility to learn anytime and anywhere. However, the lack of in-depth teacher explanations and the dependency on a stable internet connection remained significant barriers. The research suggested that while electronic media could significantly enhance language learning, their full potential could only be realized by addressing technological challenges and promoting digital literacy.

Abstract

The application of gamification in English language learning aims to overcome the low motivation and student engagement that often occurs due to conventional teaching methods. This research uses a gamification approach through interactive educational video media designed to deliver vocabulary and grammar materials in an engaging manner. The method was applied in teaching and learning activities and observed to assess student responses and learning outcomes. The results showed an increase in students' enthusiasm, active participation, and understanding of the material taught. Students are more likely to remember vocabulary and understand grammar concepts, and show positive responses to learning that becomes more fun and less boring. The findings confirm that gamification through educational videos is effective in creating an interactive learning atmosphere and improving the quality of English learning.
