Abstract

This study's goal is to find out the different result of the students who taught using podcast and conventional in teaching listening. Listening is when someone pays attention to what a speaker is saying and tries to understand and make sense of what the speaker is saying. Since there are still many students think that listening is very hard to them, so the teacher should also be focused on how to create an environment that is conducive, fun, exciting, and fascinating to learn in order to improve learning outcomes for their students. One attempt is to incorporate media into the educational process, the media that could be used in teaching listening is by using podcast. A podcast is an online audio file that may be downloaded onto a personal computer or mobile device. Podcasts are often presented as part of a series, and listeners can sign up to get new episodes of the series automatically when they are released. The researcher used a quantitative method for this work. The study was quasi-experimental: Pre- and post-test, non-randomized control group. The samples are the students from XI IPS 1 dan XI IPS 2, which consist of 70 students. In this study, the research tool was used a test. The test here was multiple choice with 15 items of question. Based on the findings, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which said there is a difference results between classes taught using podcast and classes taught using conventional to develop students’ listening skill at the eleventh grade of MAN Kota Palangka Raya was accepted. The null hypothesis (H0), which stated that there is no difference results between classes taught using podcast and classes taught using conventional to develop students’ listening skill at the eleventh grade of MAN Kota Palangka Raya was rejected. It indicates that the implementation of podcast as a media is more effective in listening activities than conventional style of teaching.

The local culture integration in foreign language (FL) reading classroom can help learners understanding text more easily and quickly. This research took 37 secondary school students in the junior level (11 males & 26 females) as the sample. The quantitative research method was used with a case-study research design. There were three research objectives focused in this study: (1) the influence of local culture-based pictorial narrative texts on students' reading comprehension; (2) the correlation between students' perceptions of integrating local culture into the development of reading materials and students' reading comprehension; and (3) the difference of problems faced by students in understanding pictorial narrative texts in terms of purpose of the story, characters in the story, orientation, complications, and resolution of the story. The results showed that local culture-based pictorial narratives had a significant effect on students' reading comprehension, and were positively correlated to each other. In addition, students do not have discrepancy in terms of problems encountered when understanding the narratives such as the purpose of the story, characters in the story, orientation, complication, and resolution of the story.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of using short movies as a teaching tool on improving writing skills in senior high school students. Writing was often a challenging skill for students, especially in traditional teaching environments, which hindered their creativity and writing proficiency. The integration of multimedia tools, such as short films, offered an innovative approach to enhancing student engagement and writing abilities. This pre-experimental study involved 30 eleventh-grade students from a senior high school in Banjarmasin, Indonesia, who were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using pre-and post-tests, focusing on narrative writing tasks before and after exposure to four short movie-based lessons. The results indicated a significant improvement in students' writing scores, with an average increase of 17.8 points. Statistical analysis using paired sample t-tests revealed a significant positive effect (p < 0.05), supporting the hypothesis that short movies could effectively enhance students' writing performance. The study concluded that short films were a valuable educational tool that not only improved writing skills but also motivated and engaged students, making writing tasks more relatable and enjoyable. These findings suggest that incorporating short movies into the curriculum could lead to better writing outcomes in senior high school English education.

Abstract

This "Transatlantic Divide" between AmE and BrE refers to one of the most prominent sociolinguistic phenomena, especially in slang usage. To date, prior research into slang has commonly been restricted to studying single regional varieties or comparing lists without considering their narrative and sociocultural functions. This paper, therefore, aims to bridge this gap by discussing the sociolinguistic function of the interplay between AmE and BrE slang in the 2008 teen comedy film Wild Child. The research applies a descriptive qualitative method with a content analysis approach to analyze the dialogue in the movie in order to find, categorize, and interpret slang expressions according to their communicative and narrative roles. These results show two different sociolinguistic functions. First, local varieties of AmE and BrE slang serve as linguistic barriers, creating conflict, misunderstanding, and marking social distance between characters. The differences underline the construction of "in-group" and "out-group" identities and focus on cultural dissonance. Second, a category of mutually intelligible expressions or "global slang" serves as a linguistic bridge that fosters mutual understanding, emotional connection, and integration of the characters. In these ways, the movie presents language both as a source of division and as a means of reconciliation. The paper concludes that Wild Child effectively mobilizes the Transatlantic Divide not merely from a stylistic or comedic perspective but as a core narrative mechanism. Slang is used as a means through which social hierarchies, cultural adaptation, and identity negotiation are dramatized, showing how linguistic variation drives both conflict and harmony in cross-cultural communication.
