Abstract

This research aimed to find out the student's problems and practical needs in learning speaking. It employed qualitative methods that gathered responses from 40 out of 233 students in the second semester of the English Department at the University of Mataram. The questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data needed. The questionnaire consisted of 20 questions and was distributed using Google Forms, and the interview utilized 5 questions to elicit more detailed responses from the respondents. The collected data were analyzed systematically through the data reduction, display, and conclusion stages. The findings of this research showed that the students not only had linguistic problems, such as lack of pronunciation, grammatical knowledge, and vocabulary mastery, but they also faced psychological problems including fear of making mistakes, shyness of speaking in front of the class, anxiety, and not having enough confidence. Further, to improve their speaking skills, the students required more practice and exercises inside and outside the classroom with suitable speaking materials for their level. Additionally, focusing on activities rather than just materials and providing constructive feedback whenever they make mistakes will be crucial for their learning.

Abstract

Vocational high school students need to learn the English language tailored to their specific majors. It is necessary to design the specific module for their chosen field, especially in fashion majors. This study aimed to design an interactive English teaching module using Quizizz for a fashion major in a vocational high school, along with discovering the feasibility of the English teaching module in supporting teaching-learning in English for fashion majors. This is a Research and Development (R&D) study with the ADDIE model consisting of five phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Interviews, documentation, and expert validation questionnaires were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative analysis. The developed English teaching module using Quizizz resulted in three sections: introduction, main lessons, and assessments with different variations of feature tasks such as slides, poll, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blanks, match, reorder, drag-drop and drop-down, draw, audio responses, and open-ended enriched the interactivity of the module. The results of expert validation for the module showed high feasibility for the module to use in the classroom, with an average percentage score of 96% for content and 94% for media. Based on the result, it can be shown that the English teaching module using the Quizizz application is very good to be applied in English teaching and learning for fashion majors.

Abstract

This study explores the development of English learning materials using Quizizz-based interactive design for tenth-grade students of Office Management and Business Services (OMBS) at SMKN 1 Mataram. Vocational high schools aim to equip students with both specialized skills and essential competencies, such as English, which is taught as a foreign language tailored to meet the specific needs of the OMBS curriculum. The integration of technology, particularly through the use of Quizizz, enhances the learning experience by promoting engagement and motivation among students. The study employs the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) for material development, ensuring alignment with student needs and curricular goals. Expert validation and student-teacher feedback reveal that the materials are highly effective, with students demonstrating increased motivation and improved learning outcomes. The interactive elements of Quizizz, including polls, open-ended questions, and various quiz formats, foster an engaging and interactive learning environment. The findings suggest that Quizizz-based learning materials can significantly enhance the learning process, making it more enjoyable and effective for vocational high school students. This research serves as a reference for future studies on material development and highlights the potential of Quizizz as a valuable tool for interactive education.

Abstract

Basic Mandarin Training for Tourism for Lombok Tourism Polytechnic students was held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. This community service program, organized by University of Mataram's Language Academic Support Unit, aimed to introduce Mandarin to students. Participants were students who would be undertaking internships in the hotel industry in Taiwan. The training consisted of two stages: program socialization and the training sessions themselves. The material provided covered Mandarin phonetic basics, Hanzi character writing, and simulation-based conversation practice. Participants learned through role-playing activities in tourism scenarios, such as hotel room bookings and restaurant services. Despite the program's limited duration, participants showed high enthusiasm and actively participated. They were also introduced to using the Pleco application as a tool to support independent learning. Evaluation results indicated that this program was quite effective in providing a basic understanding of Mandarin for Lombok Tourism Polytechnic students, though independent practice in pronunciation is highly needed. Therefore, after the training, participants were advised to integrate applications and AI to support their self-study efforts. With improved Mandarin skills, students are expected to compete in the global tourism industry and provide higher-quality services to Chinese tourists.

Abstract

This study analyses how student-teachers at the University of Mataram’s English Education Program view the benefits of the microteaching course to get ready for their Teaching Apprenticeship (PLP). Applying a mixed-method strategy, data were collected from 30 student-teachers through a Likert-scale questionnaire and in-depth interview with six selected participants. Findings indicate that the majority of participants (76%–93%) perceived microteaching as highly beneficial for developing practical teaching skills, building confidence, designing student engagement strategies, and fostering reflective practice. Nevertheless, only 40%–57% felt adequately prepared to handle real-world classroom challenges such as managing disruptive student behavior, addressing distractions, coping with emotional stress, and delivering extended lessons—issues largely absent in the idealized microteaching setting. These results reveal a persistent gap between the structured safety of microteaching simulations and the unpredictable dynamics of authentic school environments. The study recommends enhancing microteaching by incorporating unpredictable classroom scenarios, integrating classroom management and emotional resilience modules, using role-plays that simulate authentic student behaviors, and facilitating post-PLP reflection seminars. While microteaching remains a valuable foundational component of teacher education, these improvements could better align it with the multifaceted demands of real classroom teaching.

Abstract

Situated in a disadvantaged condition in Lombok, Indonesia, the present study looks at the enactment of an emergency EFL course after earthquake and aftershock circumstances in a public university in the region. For such a purpose, forty-two non-English department students who attended the course in four face-to-face and nine asynchronous meetings were recruited using a convenience sampling technique. A set of questionnaire was disseminated to document participants’ responses on the course implementation. Observation and semi-structured interviews were also conducted to portray the pedagogical praxis. The findings suggest that the course delivery did not utterly reflect an effective teaching-learning process accordingly due to various factors. Barriers to using the WhatsApp tool also existed. Interestingly, the students positively reflected the course as the best way to learn in a disadvantaged condition. However, they were not confident with their attainment in English skills and components. Further considerations on how to design materials and assessment instruments and build a decent interaction are needed in learning under such disadvantaged condition. HIGHLIGHTS : The findings evince that the course delivery did not utterly reflect an effective teaching-learning process accordingly due to various factors. Barriers to using the WhatsApp tool also existed. The students positively reflected the course as the best way to learn in an emergency learning milieu. The teacher appeared to be able to maintain students’ motivation. Further considerations on how to design materials and assessment instruments and build a decent interaction are needed in learning under such disadvantaged conditions.
