Abstract

Citizenship and moral education face persistent global challenges, particularly in vocational secondary schools where students tend to prefer practical and contextualized learning experiences over abstract and teacher-centered instruction. Within this broader concern, the effectiveness of innovative pedagogical models in improving learning outcomes in citizenship education remains an important empirical question. This study examines the impact of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) on student achievement in Pancasila (citizenship) education. A quantitative approach employing a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was used. The participants consisted of two Grade X classes in an Indonesian vocational school: an experimental group receiving instruction through Project-Based Learning and a control group experiencing conventional teacher-centered instruction. Learning achievement data were collected using standardized achievement tests and analyzed through inferential statistical techniques to determine the significance of differences between groups. The findings indicate a statistically significant difference in posttest scores between students exposed to Project-Based Learning and those receiving conventional instruction, with the experimental group demonstrating higher learning achievement. These results provide empirical support for the instructional value of project-based pedagogies in citizenship education contexts, particularly within vocational settings that require more contextual and participatory approaches. This study contributes to the growing body of research on innovative pedagogy in moral and citizenship education by offering quasi-experimental evidence of Project-Based Learning’s effectiveness in enhancing academic achievement. The findings have broader implications for rethinking instructional strategies in citizenship education, especially in educational contexts seeking to bridge moral theory with authentic and practice-oriented learning experiences.

Abstract

Design-based learning (DBL) is widely promoted in engineering education, yet there is limited evidence on how students experience DBL when a common framework is implemented across multiple programs. This study examined support for four DBL phases—problem exploration (PE), design generation (DG), prototype iteration (PI), and reflection and evaluation (RE)—in undergraduate engineering programs at an application-oriented university in China. A 12-item DBL phases scale was developed from this framework and prior work in design-oriented engineering education and was completed by 407 students who had taken at least one DBL-based course in 12 programs. Partial least squares confirmatory factor analysis supported a four-factor structure with satisfactory reliability and convergent validity. To capture heterogeneity that is often obscured by average scores, a person-centered profiling approach was adopted. K-means cluster analysis of the four phase scores yielded three DBL experience profiles—high, moderate, and low intensity—that differed mainly in level rather than in shape across phases and were distributed across all programs and year levels. Grounded in engineering design and experiential learning perspectives, the phase-based scale and profiles offer a pragmatic tool for monitoring DBL implementation and for targeting professional development where students most often report low-intensity DBL.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to conduct a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the implementation of the Learning Factory (LF) model in physics education, particularly for the development of 21st-century competencies among preservice physics teachers. Method: Using the PRISMA framework, the review analyzed literature published between 2020 and 2025. Articles were identified using Publish or Perish software with Google Scholar as the primary database. A total of 32 relevant journal articles were systematically screened, extracted, and synthesized using thematic narrative analysis. Results: The review reveals that the Learning Factory (LF) is a promising instructional approach that effectively integrates theory and practice through project-based and experiential learning in simulated real-world environments. LF enhances critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and digital literacy, which are core competencies in 21st-century education. However, its implementation in teacher education still faces several challenges, including limited infrastructure, lack of faculty training, and misalignment in assessment systems. Novelty: This study contributes by systematically mapping the role of the Learning Factory model in physics teacher education, which remains relatively underexplored in existing research. The findings highlight LF’s strategic potential to bridge the gap between theory and practice and provide recommendations for curriculum design, faculty development, and institutional collaboration.
