Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication patterns of the Medan Tuntungan District Religious Affairs Office (KUA) in preventing early marriage. Early marriage remains a social problem in urban areas, influenced by social, cultural, economic, and religious factors, necessitating effective communication strategies. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies with purposively selected informants including the Head of the KUA, religious instructors, community leaders, parents, and adolescents. The results indicate that the Medan Tuntungan KUA implements a multidimensional communication pattern consisting of linear, interactional, and transactional patterns. The linear pattern is used in mass outreach through lectures and counseling, the interactional pattern is applied in dialogical premarital counseling, and the transactional pattern is seen in cross-sector collaboration with schools, community health centers, and community leaders. These three patterns operate simultaneously and complement each other in raising public awareness about the dangers of early marriage. Furthermore, the results also indicate that the rate of early marriage in this area is relatively low. The conclusion of this study confirms that the success of communication to prevent early marriage is influenced by the KUA's ability to build adaptive, participatory, and collaborative communication. The main obstacle identified was limited facilities, but this can be overcome by utilizing community social spaces. This research contributes to the development of development communication and organizational communication studies in the context of preventing social problems.

Abstract

This study examines the negotiation process between traditional leaders and religious leaders in addressing the controversy surrounding same-clan marriages in Aek Nabara Barumun, which are perceived as conflicting with Islamic law. The issue arises because the local community continues to uphold customary regulations prohibiting marriages between individuals of the same clan as a form of respect for cultural values and ancestral heritage, while Islamic teachings permit such marriages as long as no mahram (prohibited kinship) relationship exists. These differing perspectives have generated social dynamics that require resolution through communication and deliberation to prevent conflict within the community. This study aims to understand how the negotiation process is carried out by traditional and religious leaders and to examine the role of negotiation in maintaining a balance between customary values and Islamic principles. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving traditional leaders, religious leaders, community members, and other supporting informants in Aek Nabara Barumun. The findings reveal that deliberation and persuasive approaches constitute the primary mechanisms for resolving the controversy over same-clan marriages. Traditional leaders seek to preserve customary practices as an essential component of the community’s cultural identity, whereas religious leaders emphasize the importance of conformity with Islamic law. The study also finds that the community is more receptive to social compromise than to direct prohibition, as customary traditions continue to hold strong cultural significance. Therefore, negotiation serves as a crucial mechanism for maintaining social harmony and balancing customary traditions with religious values within the community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the instructional communication patterns of the flag-raising team coaches in fostering student discipline at SMA Negeri 1 Hamparan Perak and to identify communication barriers that arise during the training process. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the coaches' instructional communication patterns are structured through providing directions, delivering instructions, corrections, as well as evaluation and feedback. The communication applied not only serves to convey training instructions, but also fosters student discipline through instilling the values of responsibility, compliance with rules, and self-awareness. Discipline that initially emerged due to external control develops into internal awareness that is applied in academic and daily life. Communication barriers found include differences in member characters, varying levels of understanding, lack of focus, physical fatigue, and environmental factors. Therefore, structured and consistent instructional communication plays an important role in fostering student discipline in flagraising team extracurricular activities.
