Abstract

This study aimed to explore and identify egg parasitoids associated with maize (Zea mays) in Keleyan Village, Bangkalan Regency, Madura. Field observations were conducted during both vegetative and generative growth stages using a direct survey method. Eggs of lepidopteran pests were collected and reared under laboratory conditions to observe the emergence of adult parasitoids. The results showed that only one genus of egg parasitoid was found, namely Trichogramma spp., which parasitized the eggs of Spodoptera frugiperda at a parasitism rate of 17.3%. This rate was low for a biological control program. These findings indicate that the presence of natural parasitoids in the study area was not sufficiently effective in suppressing pest populations under natural conditions. Nevertheless, Trichogramma spp. still shows potential as a biological control agent, particularly if supported by augmentative or conservation-based approaches. This results can be used as foundation for the development of ecological-based environmentally friendly, and sustainable pest control strategies in lowland maize cultivation systems, especially in the Madura region.

Abstract

Pemanfaatan NEP sebagai APH memiliki beberapa keunggulan karena dapat bertahan di dalam tanah tanpa adanya inang. Terdapat 30 famili nematoda yang menjadi parasit bagi invertebrata dan tujuh diantaranya berpotensi sebagai NEP seperti Mermithidae, Allantonematidae, Neotylenchidae, Sphaerularidae, Rhabditidae, Steinernematidae, dan Heterorhabditidae. Kediri memiliki potensi yang cukup besar sebagai sumber isolat NEP mengingat kondisi agroekosistem yang memungkinkan keberadaan NEP dengan luas lahan pertanian sebesar 82.884 ha setara dengan 64% total luas lahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mempelajari pola persebaran kerapatan NEP pada lahan tebu berdasarkan titik pengambilan sampel. Lahan dengan luas 600 m2 dibagi menjadi 5 titik sampel secara menyilang. Pengambilan sampel tanah asal 5 titik sampel dibagi menjadi 10 titik sub-sampel dengan pola bintang. Isolasi dilakukan dengan metode baiting dan white trap, sedangkan perhitungan kerapatan dilakukan sebanyak 3 kali pada setiap ulangan. Analisis statitik menggunakan pengujian Kruskal-Wallis dilanjutkan dengan visualisasi menggunakan ArcGIS. Kerapatan terendah berada pada titik 1 dan 2, meningkat sedikit pada titik 4, lalu meningkat kembali di titik 5 dan paling tinggi terletak di titik 3. Secara visual, agregasi NEP di lapangan mengikuti pola distribusi terpusat. Perbedaan kerapatan ini dapat disebabkan oleh berbagai faktor seperti intensitas penyinaran yang berpengaruh terhadap suhu dan kelembaban tanah.

Abstract

Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a major insect pest of horticultural crops, causing significant yield losses.The efficacy of Beauveria bassiana, a potential biocontrol agent, can be influenced by growth media composition. This study examined the effects of cricket and fruit fly flour on B. bassiana growth and pathogenicity against Z. cucurbitae. The methods added B. bassiana growth media with different concentrations (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) of cricket and fruit fly flour and assessing its pathogenicity against Z. cucurbitae at a spore density of 10⁶ and 10⁸ spores/mL. The results showed that 1% cricket flour combined with a spore density ofspores/mL resulted in the highest mortality rate (29.33%) and the fastest infection (2 days). The lowest average mortalities were found in treatments without flour addition which were 21.3%, 19.3%, and 19%, respectively. The longest time to cause infection was observed in 7 days. Infection symptoms are marked by the emergence of white fungal mycelia covering the cuticle, while infected adults exhibit deformed, wrinkled, and smaller wings. These findings highlight the potential of growth media optimization to enhance B. bassiana virulence, contributing to the development of more effective and sustainable biocontrol strategies against Z. cucurbitae.

Abstract

Insect pests can damage plants and act as vectors of diseases such as brown planthoppers which can transmit dwarf virus disease. The presence of insect pests is influenced by the type of variety, planting patterns, and excessive use of chemical pesticides so that insect pests increase and are difficult to control. This research wanted to provide insights into the effectiveness of combining insectary plants and biopesticides as ecological strategies to manage paddy (Oryza sativa Linnaeus) insect pests. The study was conducted in February-April 2024 in Sukodadi Village, Sukodadi District, Lamongan Regency. Method of study was conducted using a combination of direct observation, insect traps, and quantitative analysis to evaluate the impact of refugia plants and biopesticides on insect pest populations in paddy fields. The analysis includes the species diversity index (Shannon-Winner), species evenness index, species richness index (Margalef), dominance index (Simpson) and similarity index (Bray-Curtis). The study obtained 2,687 individual insect pests in paddy fields with refugia and fobio and 1,761 individuals in paddy fields without refugia and fobio. Insect pests were more abundant in paddy fields with refugia and fobio compared to fields without refugia and fobio. Refugia provides alternative habitats and additional resources for insect pests, and the use of biopesticides can create temporary ecosystem imbalances, and increase the population of insect pest.

Abstract

This study compared the pest insect community structure in cocoa plantations shaded by papaya and banana trees. The study was conducted from January to March 2025 using systematic sampling in six cocoa fields, consisting of three papaya-shaded and three banana-shaded plantations. In each field, 19 traps were installed, comprising nine yellow traps, nine pitfall traps, and one light trap, supported by visual observations. Pest insects were identified to the genus level, and community structure was assessed using diversity (H′), evenness (E′), richness (R′), and dominance (C′) indices. Banana-shaded cocoa fields supported slightly more pest insect genera than papaya-shaded fields, with 22 and 21 genera recorded, respectively. Banana-shaded plots also showed higher diversity, evenness, and richness, accompanied by lower dominance. These patterns indicate that the denser banana canopy may create more heterogeneous microhabitat conditions that support a broader range of pest insects. Shade tree type influences pest insect community structure in cocoa plantations. Banana shade was associated with a more diverse and balanced pest insect community, whereas papaya shade showed relatively higher dominance, suggesting a greater risk of specific pest outbreaks. These findings highlight the importance of shade tree selection in integrated pest management, particularly for designing site-specific monitoring and targeted control strategies in cocoa plantations.

Abstract

Trichogramma japonicum is an important biological control agent used against Lepidopteran pests, and its mass production success strongly depends on the quality of the host eggs Corcyra cephalonica used for its development. This study aimed to determine the effect of storage duration of host eggs Corcyra cephalonica and the number of egg cards (pias) on the parasitization performance of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma japonicum. The research was conducted at the Parasitoid Laboratory of BBPPTP Surabaya using a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: egg storage duration (no storage, 1 week, and 2 weeks) and number of pias (3, 4, and 5). Observed parameters included host egg quality and quantity, parasitization rate, percentage of adult emergence, and sex ratio of the parasitoid. The results showed that egg storage duration significantly affected all observed parameters. Fresh eggs without storage produced the highest quality, with normal egg percentages reaching 97%, while two-week storage significantly reduced egg quality to below 68%. The highest parasitization rate was obtained from the combination without storage and three pias (P1V1), reaching 84.57%, whereas two-week storage reduced parasitization to around 66%. The highest adult emergence (87.83%) also occurred in P1V1, while the lowest was observed in P2V3 (74.29%). Similarly, the highest female proportion was recorded in P1V1 (86.67%), and the lowest in P2V3 (71.33%).

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of abiotic factors on the diversity of natural enemies in cocoa fields. The study was conducted from January to March 2025. Various traps were used, including yellow traps, light traps, pitfall traps, and visual observations. Identification showed that cocoa fields with misting applications had a higher number of natural enemies (1,052 individuals) compared without misting fields (658 individuals). The application of misting resulted in higher diversity indices (H'), richness (R'), and dominance (C'), as well as lower evenness (E') compared to untreated fields. These findings suggest that the misting system creates a more favorable microhabitat for natural enemy diversity, thus potentially strengthening the IPM approach in cocoa cultivation. Interestingly, the analysis showed that temperature had a significance value (sig) > 0.05, indicating that temperature did not show a significant correlation with the increase in the abundance of natural enemies, while humidity has a significance value (sig) < 0.05, which shows that humidity has a significant correlation, although statistically relatively small, with the increase in the abundance of natural enemies.

Abstract

This study aims to characterize the pesticide compounds in garlic (Allium sativum L.) extract nanoparticles and test their mortality effectiveness against armyworms (Spodoptera litura F.) in the laboratory. Nanoparticle synthesis was carried out using the ionic gelation method with chitosan-TPP, which was subsequently characterized using PSA, SEM, FT-IR, and GC-MS. The characterization results showed a particle size of 930.52 nm with a homogeneous distribution (PDI 0.147). GC-MS analysis successfully identified the main bioactive organosulfur compounds, namely diallyl disulfide (20.72%), diallyl trisulfide (14.16%), and diallyl tetrasulfide (5.79%). Bioactivity testing using the sandwich method at five concentration variations (0-1%) showed the highest mortality reaching 70% at a 1% concentration. Probit analysis yielded values of LC₅₀ 1.116% and LC₉₀ 1.720%, as well as LT₅₀ 5.117 days and LT₉₀ 9.893 days. Statistical test results indicated a significant difference (p<0.05) between all treatments and the control group. Thus, it can be concluded that the garlic extract nanoparticle formulation has the potential to be an effective nano-bioinsecticide, with a mode of action that is dose-dependent and time-dependent in controlling S. litura larvae.

Abstract

Pollinating insects are referred as support services, namely services by the processes in the ecosystems that support human well-being by maintaining or enhancing ecosystem services. The availability of flowers, diversity, and behavior of visiting pollinator insects affect the effectiveness of pollination to increase the formation of fruit sets of mango plants. The purpose of this study is to observe the behavior of pollinator insects visiting the mango gadung clone 21 varieties and their effectiveness in increasing the formation of fruit sets. Research has been carried out on two flower seasons: March-May (Off season) and July-September (On season) 2020. Visiting behaviors observed were the number of visits per minute (foraging rate) and the length of visit per flower (flower handling time). Pollination effectiveness was measured from the number of fruit sets formed from the open flower panicles and confined with a tangerine gauze. The results of the study obtained seven species including Apis sp., Trigona sp., Xylocopa sp., Polistes sp. 1, Polistes sp. 2, Chrysomya sp., and Eristalis sp. Visits of pollinating insects on the highest number of mango panicle flowers were (31.69 ± 7.69) flowers / 60 seconds by Trigona sp insects, and the lowest numbers were (2.70 ± 0.67) flowers / 60 seconds by Eristalis sp. insects. The longest visits of pollinator insects on mango flowers were obtained by Eristalis sp for (25.3 ± 8.50) sec/individual/flower and the shortest visits were by Trigona sp for (1.8 ± 0.63) seconds/individual/flower. Screening of quorum quenching activity of rhizobacteria against Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum. Biodiversitas 23: 4336-4342. Quorum sensing (QS) is a mechanism for determining the virulence of the phytopathogenic bacterium Pectobacterium carotovorum. P. carotovorum carries out the QS mechanism with the chemical compound acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) to signal and carry out its pathogenicity and virulence. The pathogenicity of P. carotovorum can be prevented through quorum quencher (QQ) activity derived from bacteria that degrade AHL compounds by producing AHL-lactonase. In the present investigation, AHL-lactonase-producing bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of carrot cultivation in Bumiaji Sub-District, City of Batu, East Java, Indonesia. The isolated bacteria were screened for quorum quenching activity. Out of thirty-seven isolates, 7 rhizospheric bacteria showed QQ activity against the Chromobacterium violaceum bioindicator. The hypersensitivity test on tobacco plants showed that, five strains SRL07, SRL09, SRL15, SRL21, and SRL35 did not cause a hypersensitivity response. The five isolates were able to suppress the virulence of P. carotovorum in carrot tubers. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the five isolates had the highest similarity to Bacillus thuringiensis, B. subtilis, and B. cereus. The five isolates were detected to have the gene encoding AHL-lactonase (aiiA). The present study provides new information about the QQ activity of rhizosphere and its potential as a quorum quencher against P. carotovorum.
