Abstract

Language learning, including grammar learning, requires social strategies involving interaction. The study explored the prevalence of social strategy use, patterns of social strategy use employed by English Language Learners (ELL) in learning English grammar, and the rationale behind their use. Using purposive sampling and a mixed-methods design (Grammar Learning Strategies Inventory – GLSI – and follow-up semi-structured interviews) with 194 Indonesian undergraduate respondents showed that social strategies were most employed, followed by metacognitive, cognitive, and affective. The findings also illustrated three social strategy use patterns: (a) involving teachers and more proficient others, (b) practicing with peers, and (c) involving peers as motivators. The rationales for social strategy use were further demonstrated: (a) to understand and avoid mistakes in the use of grammar, (b) share and enhance understanding of grammar materials, (c) know errors and correct them to participate more in learning, and (d) improve grammar usage. These findings provide practical and theoretical insights into students' social strategy use in the ELL context. Limitations and opportunities for additional research are also presented.

Abstract

The cultivation of 21st-century competencies within a constructivist learning environment opens avenues for students to discover their distinct strengths. Unfortunately, educators frequently neglect effective teaching models, hindering the creation of an ideal learning environment in literary education. This study examined how the 7E Learning Cycle Model impacts student performance in Popular Fiction classes. Additionally, it sought to uncover challenges faced by instructors teaching the Popular Fiction course and explore how they employ the 7E model to establish a conducive learning environment, ensuring successful outcomes in Popular Fiction classes. This study adopted Classroom Action Research. Data gathered through popular fiction analysis test, interview, observation, peer assessment, and other relevant documents. The study was conducted in the English Language Education Study Program of UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu. 39 third semester students actively involved in seven week-learning popular fictions by using 7E Cycle Model. The research demonstrated notable improvements in Cycle I and Cycle II, with post-test scores rising from an average pre-test score of 63.23 to 79.59. In Cycle II, 82.01% of students achieved "Good" and "Very Good" ratings, indicating substantial progress. Positive outcomes encompassed active engagement, collaboration, independent knowledge construction, skill development, profound understanding, heightened critical thinking, and real-life context application. These results fostered sustained interest and motivation in the continuous learning cycle. Pedagogically, the study recommends the ongoing integration of the 7E Learning Model into the Popular Fiction curriculum, refining collaborative learning, and integrating technology for enhanced teaching effectiveness while addressing any limitations.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines students' views on the use of Basic Reading Comprehension materials developed with the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and a multicultural-based approach. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of PBL with a multicultural approach to improve students' reading comprehension, motivation, and learning engagement in a diverse educational environment. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach involving 300 Indonesian students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires, then analyzed thematically to produce the effectiveness of this approach. Results: Students felt more motivated and active in discussions when the material combined problem-solving tasks and culturally relevant content. PBL improved the ability to understand texts through critical thinking and collaboration, while the multicultural approach helped students integrate the material with their cultural background, thus encouraging inclusivity and awareness of diversity. Challenges found include the need for more assistance for students who are not familiar with PBL. Conclusion: The integration of PBL with multicultural-based materials can significantly improve reading learning by making it more interactive, inclusive, and meaningful. It is recommended to provide additional support for diverse learners and develop more culturally responsive teaching materials.

Abstract

Grammar learning strategies (GLS) play a crucial role in successful language acquisition; however, this area remains understudied in the Asian English as a foreign language context. To address this gap, this mixed-methods study explored the English GLS employed by Asian (Indonesian) undergraduate participants (N = 194), examining differences in frequency of use (most and least used), as well as gender, semester, and the rationale for implementation. Participants completed the Grammar Learning Strategies Inventory (GLSI), a 70-item, closed-ended, five-point Likert scale questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that participants were high users of social strategies, followed by metacognitive, cognitive, and affective strategies. The exploration also identified various rationales for the high use of strategies, including understanding and avoiding grammar mistakes, correcting errors, improving grammar usage, sharing knowledge, and enhancing comprehension. In contrast, rationales for the low use of affective strategies included stress hindering focus, lack of motivation, insufficient practice, low confidence, fear of making mistakes, neglect of self-rewards, limited feedback, failure to maintain a learning diary, and infrequent self-reflection. The article concludes by discussing the studys limitations and offering suggestions for further research. These findings enhance the understanding of the social strategies used by English language learners and, consequently, inform pedagogical practices while contributing to the scholarly literature.

Abstract

Studies on research gap presentation only focused on certain field of studies, whereas there are no studies that try to compare different field of studies. Therefore, this research aims to fill the gap and investigate how authors from different field of studies present research gap in their research articles. As the research gap presentation are mainly occurred in the beginning sections of an article, 100 article introductions from 10 journals have been analyzed. The journals were divided into two major fields which are Hard Science and Soft Science. Analysis was done to find out what types of research gap strategies that is used by the authors following the seven research gaps framework: evidence gap, knowledge gap, practical-knowledge gap, methodological gap, empirical gap, theoretical gap, and population gap. The results show that authors from both Hard Sciences and Soft Science used knowledge gap as the most frequently used strategy and theoretical gap as the least frequently used strategy. Other result is authors in Hard Sciences use more varied strategies than in Soft Science. Furthermore, both fields seem quite similar regarding the occurrence of research gaps while still has differences in some parts.
