Abstract

 ABSTRACT This study is aimed at exploring teachers’ techniques in teaching reading comprehension at one senior high school in Bandung Barat and investigating exploring the problems that the teachers encountered in teaching reading. This study employed a case study research design which used two data collection, observation and questionnaire. Two English teachers were purposively selected to participate in this research. Then, they were analyzed and reported descriptively. After being analyzed, the data revealed that the respondents used the teaching reading comprehension techniques in three reading stages: pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading stages. In pre-reading stage, they applied Previewing technique and Vocabulary Instruction Technique; Pre-Reading Questions and Brainstorming Technique and discussing text type. Then, in while reading stage, they used Question-Answering Techniques, Vocabulary Instruction Technique, Recitation and Reading aloud. In post-reading stage, they conducted reviewing technique and follow up strategy. The data also indicated that in teaching reading comprehension, there were four problems encountered by the respondents in teaching reading: lack of students’ vocabulary mastery, lack of motivation in reading, students were not used to read a lot on a regular basis and teaching time allocation. With reference to the findings, it is recommended for English teacher to select appropriate technique in teaching reading which is relevant to the students’ needs. In addition, the teachers also are expected to improve their ability in teaching practice. It can be done through joining some trainings and workshops about techniques in teaching, reading a lot of sources, and sharing information with others teachers. Key Words: Teacher’s Techniques, Reading Comprehension and Problem.  ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi teknik guru dalam membaca pemahaman mengajar di salah satu SMA di Bandung Barat dan menyelidiki menjelajahi masalah yang dihadapi guru dalam membaca mengajar. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian studi kasus yang menggunakan dua pengumpulan data, observasi dan kuesioner. Dua guru bahasa Inggris secara sengaja dipilih untuk berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Kemudian, mereka dianalisis dan dilaporkan secara deskriptif. Setelah dianalisis, data menunjukkan bahwa responden menggunakan teknik membaca pemahaman ajaran dalam tiga tahap membaca: pra-membaca, sementara-membaca, dan tahap pasca-membaca. Pada tahap pra-membaca, mereka menerapkan teknik dan Teknik Kosakata Instruksi Meninjau; Pre-Reading Pertanyaan dan Brainstorming Teknik dan mendiskusikan jenis teks. Kemudian, di saat membaca panggung, mereka menggunakan Pertanyaan-Menjawab Teknik, Kosakata Instruksi Teknik, Zikir dan Membaca dengan suara keras. Pada tahap pasca-membaca, mereka yang dilakukan meninjau teknik dan menindaklanjuti strategi. Data ini juga menunjukkan bahwa dalam membaca pemahaman ajaran, ada empat masalah yang dihadapi oleh responden dalam membaca ajaran: kurangnya penguasaan kosakata siswa, kurangnya motivasi dalam membaca, siswa tidak digunakan untuk banyak membaca secara dan pengajaran waktu yang teratur alokasi. Dengan mengacu pada temuan, disarankan untuk guru bahasa Inggris untuk memilih teknik yang tepat dalam membaca mengajar yang relevan dengan kebutuhan siswa. Selain itu, guru juga diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam praktek mengajar. Hal ini dapat dilakukan melalui beberapa bergabung pelatihan dan lokakarya tentang teknik dalam mengajar, membaca banyak sumber, dan berbagi informasi dengan guru lain. Kata Kunci: Teknik Guru, Pemahaman Membaca dan Masalah.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to investigate the kind of activities take place during the processof teaching writing recount text through picture series and to identify the benefits that the students obtained from writing recount text through picture series. This research used a qualitative descriptive research method. The respondents of the research are an English teacher and seven grade students of Mts Nurul Hidayah Batujajar. The data were obtained from observation and interview. The results of the study revealed that the teaching writing by using picture series can improve students’ ability in writing recount text. Specifically, they showed some improvement on process of writing and vocabulary. Moreover, the data from observation and interview showed that there are some benefits, which are the development of students’ writing ability, the increasing of students’ participation in the class, fun learning’s atmosphere and the increasing of students’ writing interest.

Abstract

Teachers often have difficulties in finding the appropriate learning materials in teaching reading. Without appropriate reading texts that suit them, students spend long hours in the classroom with poor achievement in reading comprehension. This research, therefore aims to find out whether the use of the authentic material can improve students’ reading comprehension. With regard to the purpose of the research, an experimental research is applied where twenty-five pairs of students from two groups are observed. The data are obtained from pre-test and post-test. The data are statistically analyzed and then compared by using mann whitney U test. The result of the study reveals that the use of authentic material in teaching reading does not significantly improve students’ reading comprehension.  Nevertheless, it is recommended that teachers use authentic reading materials for a change. In addition, when bringing authentic materials into classroom, they should be used in accordance with students' ability, as well as with suitable tasks being given. Keywords: Authentic Material and Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This research is based on the importance of listening skill for students at Senior High School especially twelfth grade, because they will face the National Examination. As one of English skill, listening is the most difficult skill to be taught and  this process cannot be avoided by all teachers who teach English. Moreover, some teachers still get difficulties how to teach listening to students and this research is focused on Analyzing Teacher’s Difficulties in teaching listening. In this research, the writer used case study and qualitative research method.  The subject of this research was one of an English teacher at MA Islahul Aqidah Cikalongwetan West Java. The instruments of this research are observation, interview and questionnaire. In short, the results of this research showed that teacher’s difficulties divided into two factors, those are internal and external factors. Internal factors which came from the respondent himself such as; he feels the difficulties in teaching, preparing listening materials, choosing method, technique, and strategy. External factors are; sound from environment activities like woodcutter machine, module, media problem as cable injector of sound system to laptop, English laboratory, electric off, and the difference of listening materials in syllabus 2013 curriculum and National Examination materials.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify techniques that the lecturers use in assessing readingcomprehension and to find the way English lecturers construct classroom-based reading assessments.Three English lecturers were selected as the respondents of this research. The data were obtainedthrough classroom observation and interview. Then, they were analyzed and reported descriptively.The results of this research revealed that in assessing reading comprehension all respondents usedvarious techniques such as short answer question, matching test, multiple choice and observation(teacher made method) and summary and retelling (students conducted method). In addition, they usedthe different sources in designing assessment instruments. The sources were taken not only fromtextbook but also from internet, journals and other textbooks. Abstract

This paper sheds some lights on the practice of lesson study conducted in higher education level in relations to teacher professional development. This study employed an explorative research design which involved a team of three English teachers of STKIP Siliwangi and one class of English Department. The team was involved in jointly designing, teaching, researching, refining a research lesson. The research was conducted in three cycles, in which each cycle was evaluated. The data were collected through two instruments: classroom observation and teachers’ reflective notes. The result revealed that the practice of lesson study can create multiple pathways for teaching improvement, especially in terms of collaborative activities done by teachers involved in the lesson study team. The result also revealed that the practice of lesson study the practice of lesson study can improve not only students’ academic skills, but also students’ social skills.

Abstract

Using an effective practice of comprehending English text is another effort to improvereading comprehension of EFL students, especially the Indonesian students. Thus, thisstudy aims to see whether there is a difference in performance when students practiceregularly with cloze passages and practice with passage in full but followed by carefully written comprehension questions. Regarding the purpose of the research, anexperimental research is used where thirteen pairs of students from two groups areobserved. The data are collected from pre-test and post-test. Quantitative dataobtained is statistically analyzed and then compares by using t-test with paired samplestatistics. The result of the study reveals that Students treated by cloze passagessignificantly better than students treated by full passages in terms of readingcomprehension ability. It is evidently clear that cloze is an essential teachingtechnique that fosters reading comprehension. Therefore, it is recommended thatKeywords: Cloze Passage and Reading Comprehension

Abstract

The aims of this study were to describe the implementation of snowball throwing in teaching grammar and to investigate the benefits of applying snowball throwing. The research was conducted at STKIP Siliwangi Bandung. This study employed qualitative research involving one class consisting of second semester students in English department who were taking the subject of foundation of English grammar. The data were obtained from classroom observation and students’ interview. The findings showed that there are seven stages in implementing snowball throwing in teaching grammar. The stages consist of preparing teaching material, forming group, re-explaining the material to the member of the group, formulating question, tossing the ball, answering questions and evaluating teaching and learning process. In addition, the findings also revealed that there are some benefits from applying snowball throwing in teaching grammar such as improving of students’ comprehension in learning grammar, creating enjoyable learning’s atmosphere, increasing students’ vocabulary mastery, developing students’ speaking skill, developing of students’ cooperation skill and increasing of students’ participation in the class. Abstract

Mixing two languages in Indonesia is currently happening. Communities in big cities often combine the use of two languages in life and influence others to do so. This phenomenon can be called code-mixing. The purposes of this study, researchers to analyze the types of code-mixing Cinta Laura’s vlog and to identify the most dominant types of code-mixing. This research used Musyken (2000) theory about code-mixing. The data were taken from Cinta Laura’s vlog updated from Ferbuary until March 2020. The researchers used descriptive qualitative method. There were types of code-mixing, found in Cinta Laura’s Vlog namely insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization. In addition, the data also showed that insertion is the dominant type of code-mixing that is most found.  . Keywords:  Factors Motivation, Code-Mixing, Vlog

Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify students' difficulties in reading using Question-Answer Relationship. The researchers employed descriptive qualitative research. The participants of the research were seventh-grade students of SMPN 2 Parongpong. To collect data for this study, questionnaire and test were used as the instruments of this research. Then, the data were analyzed qualitatively.
