Abstract

Minimum Competency Assessment is a component of the assessment as an assessment policy established by the Indonesia government in independent learning to assess the success of formal education in schools. The junior high school of Muhammadiyah 8 Batu has implemented learning innovations. However, it still needs to be improved, especially in integrating the involvement of students in creative and critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, and refers to the Minimum Competency Assessment. This Lesson Study mentoring activity aims to improve the quality of learning mathematics by using a contextual approach oriented to Minimum Competency Assessment. This mentoring activity used workshop and simulation methods. Four mathematics teachers attended the workshop and simulation. The results showed that the Lesson Study team produced a Minimum Competency Assessment for six grade 7 groups oriented contextual learning design that integrated students’ involvement in creative and critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, which was realized through lesson design. Model teachers and observers were enthusiastic and carried out Minimum Competency assessment-oriented contextual learning activities through Lesson Study well. Students gave a positive response and were very active while participating in learning. The mentoring activities of Minimum Competency Assessment-oriented contextual learning can be said to be effective. The learning designs prepared by the teacher can be implemented in other classes with relatively the same student characteristics.

Abstract

This study investigates the mathematical representation processes of junior high school students in Indonesia when solving higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) problems, using machine learning-based analysis Given the increasing volume of mathematics education research (PER) literature, traditional thematic analysis methods are inadequate for tracking developments and identifying future research directions. To address this, we applied the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) algorithm, a natural language processing (NLP) technique, to automate thematic analysis of Indonesian PER literature. Our sample comprised six junior high school students, categorized by mathematical ability into high (2 students), medium (2 students), and low (2 students). Data preprocessing included tokenization, stop-word removal, and stemming to prepare the text corpus for LDA modeling. HOTS problems, which require critical thinking and problem-solving skills, were used to assess students' abilities. The findings highlight three primary aspects of mathematical representation: visual, symbolic, and verbal. High-ability students demonstrated a propensity for using and transforming visual representations innovatively, while medium-ability students predominantly employed symbolic representations. In contrast, low-ability students exhibited limited or no changes in their representations. These results underscore the varying approaches to mathematical problem-solving based on ability levels. This study illustrates the effectiveness of NLP methods in thematic analysis, presenting an automated, comprehensive approach to understanding thematic developments in students' mathematical representation processes. By identifying research gaps and suggesting future research directions, our findings can inform scholars and educators aiming to enhance the quality of mathematics education. However, the small sample size limits the generalizability of the results, and future research with larger samples is recommended to validate and expand upon these findings.

Abstract

Relational understanding constitutes students’ awareness of appropriate procedures to solve problems along with logical reasoning. Itis pivotal to help students solve problems in mathematics. It is necessary that the teaching of mathematics be directed to achieve relational understanding. Accordingly, students are capable of solving complicated problems in mathematics. This current research aims at analyzing and describing relational understanding and the patterns of answering questions of the fifth graders on integer operation. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study as the research design. Further, three students belonging to the fifth grade of Elementary School in Malang City, Indonesia, were set up as the research subjects. A test was administered to measure the subjects' relational understanding. All collected data were analyzed using an interactive technique. The result has indicated that the highly-proficient student was able to show excellent relational understanding. Besides, it was shown that the fairly-proficient student could show good relational understanding. The lowly-proficient student was shown to be able to achieve only half of the holistic criteria set for relational understanding. The patterns of answering the questions demonstrated by all students in all levels included jotting down the models, completing the models, and answering the questions. The highlyproficient student understood the information and wrote it down. Whilst the fairly-proficient student understood the information without translating it into the written form. At last, the lowly-proficient student did not pronounce any signals of understanding of the information.

Abstract

Representation can be interpreted as a model or alternative form of a problem situation that is used to find a solution. Mathematical representation indicators describe three main aspects of mathematical representation: visual, symbolic, and verbal. Therefore. With the representation process, students have a good opportunity to solve problems so they can solve the problem correctly. This research describes the process of selecting and changing students' mathematical representations in solving HOTS problems. The research approach used is qualitative research. The subjects of this research were six junior high school students who had high (2), medium (2), and low (2) levels of mathematics ability. The data collection techniques chosen by the researchers were tests and interviews. The research results showed that six students used visual representations to solve HOTS questions. Meanwhile, one student with moderate mathematical ability chose to use symbolic representation. This research concludes that low-level students do not change the representations made into other forms of representation. Meanwhile, students in the medium and high ability level categories changed the representation they created into another representation. Students with high-level math skills can create visual representations in several forms.

Abstract

Background: Understanding the relationship between students' thinking styles and their numeracy literacy, especially in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions, is essential in educational research.Aim: This study aims to explore how students' thinking styles influence their numeracy literacy in addressing HOTS-based questions.Method: A descriptive qualitative approach was employed in this research. The study involved eight students from Larangan 1 Public Middle School, selected through a thinking style questionnaire. Two students were chosen from each of the four identified thinking style categories. Data were collected using tests comprising two HOTS-based questions and interviews. Results: The findings indicate that students' numeracy literacy varies significantly according to their thinking styles when solving HOTS questions. Students identified as SK and SA exhibited higher numeracy literacy, effectively utilizing various symbols and numbers, analyzing tabular information, and interpreting these analyses to make decisions. In contrast, students labeled as RK were only able to fulfill two numeracy literacy indicators and struggled with information analysis. RA students faced challenges in correctly writing numbers or symbols, analyzing information, and articulating problem-solving processes and conclusions. The study also found that students who process information sequentially exhibited better numeracy literacy in solving HOTS-based questions. Conclusion: The study concludes that students' thinking styles play a crucial role in their numeracy literacy, particularly in solving HOTS-based mathematical problems. This insight underscores the importance of considering individual cognitive styles in educational strategies to enhance mathematical problem-solving skills.

Abstract

Thinking is a cognitive way of generating ideas for problem-solving decision-making strategies. This study aims to analyze and describe intuitive thinking processes in solving students' mathematical assignments about geometry based on Van Hiele's theory. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were students of class VIIIA. The research location is one of the Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Pasuruan Regency. Credibility uses source data collection techniques using the VHGT test to determine the level of the subject, geometry problem tests, document studies, and interviews. The main instruments are researchers and supporters of geometry tests and interviews. The results of this study indicate that students who think intuitively through catalytic inference are obtained spontaneously and suddenly in completing the math tasks they face without using prior knowledge, and intuitively appear globally and use shortcuts. Whereas students who think intuitively with common sense are obtained directly and directly using the steps to complete mathematical tasks neatly and neatly, intuitively, the sequence of completing tasks appears by their experience and knowledge. Based on Van Hiele's level, students who think intuitively with catalytic inference are included in level 0 (visualization), and students who think intuitively with common sense are included in level 1 (analysis). Students who think intuitively with common sense can directly and immediately use the steps to complete math tasks neatly and neatly, intuitively appearing in the sequence of completing tasks according to their experience and knowledge.
