Abstract

At this time, many students think that learning mathematics is difficult to understand. While Powtoon animation video-based mathematics learning media is still rarely applied, students feel bored. They do not understand the concept of material when the learning process uses the lecture method. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using Powtoon animation video-based mathematics learning media on the material for the Two-Variable Linear Equation System in Junior High School. The type of approach used is a pre-experimental quantitative approach by applying a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research population includes all students of class VII-A at SMP NEGERI 1 NGIMBANG for the academic year 2020/2021, with 32 students consisting of 8 male students and 24 female students. Data collection techniques using tests and questionnaire sheets. While the data analysis technique used is normalized gain. The data obtained show differences in students' test results using the Powtoon animated video and before using the Powtoon animated video. The difference was seen from the average score of the students' test results before using the media of 36.41 and after using the media of 92.58. In addition, the research results from the N-Gain Test results show that the use of Powtoon animation video media is effective in learning mathematics. It is evidenced-based on the results of the expert test and media validation by obtaining 85% and 83.75%, which means that it belongs to the outstanding category. In comparison, the results of the student response questionnaire of 81.29% belong to the outstanding category. Students' test results get an average of 0.88% from the n-gain, which shows a high classification. This study indicates that Powtoon animation video media is effective in learning mathematics compared to learning that only uses the lecture method. 29% of it belongs to the outstanding category, then through the test results, students get an average of 0.88%, which is obtained from the n-gain, which means it shows a high classification. Abstract

Critical thinking skills are one of the main objectives of learning Mathematics. HOTS questions are needed so that students are familiar with international standard questions. This study aims to describe the mathematical critical thinking skills of students in the Regular, Accelerated, and Olympic class. Qualitative descriptive research approach with case study design. The subjects of this study were three students who came from different class programs. The research instruments used were tests and interviews. Data analysis used the following procedures: reduction data, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the Regular class students had 'low' critical thinking skills. Regular students are still confused about understanding the main idea of the problem, so the strategies used are not appropriate. Acceleration class students have 'good' critical thinking skills. Accelerated students can answer questions briefly and concisely, less thorough in drawing final conclusions. Olympiad class students have 'very good' critical thinking skills. Student answers are complete and clear. Olympiad class students understand the main purpose and objectives of the questions so that they lead to correct procedures and calculations.

Abstract

Symbol sense is crucial in the understanding of mathematical problems comprising various symbols. The misuses of symbols happen due to misinterpretation, which is considered the constraint to learn algebra more comprehensively, including in linear programming. The term ‘metaphor’ is defined as a means to carry over symbol sense, and is used to improve mathematical understanding. This present research was aimed at analyzing errors on mathematical symbol as a metaphor in linear programming. This research was conducted by means of descriptive qualitative design, with a test and interview as the instruments. The test was made essay, and its results were analyzed qualitatively. The test, further, was administered to five eleventh graders selected according to highest rates of errors committed. This research has shown that the students committed a number of errors in some cases, such as representing symbols as variables, representing numbers, and interpreting symbols as relational operators. In addition, errors which the students committed in constructing mathematical models covered defining the final value, representing numbers, applying inequality system, and interpreting symbols as operation counts. This present research has provided some ways for symbol sense, and thus the errors on mathematical symbol as a metaphor could be lessened. Next, this research can be further followed up by reviewing the effectiveness of remedial instruction according to the committed errors on mathematical symbols.

Abstract

This article describes junior high school students' literacy numeracy skills in solving story problems on algebra. The research was conducted at private-junior high school located in Batam with 25 female students' research subjects. The data were obtained through the literacy numeracy skills test and interview results, and then the data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive study. The results showed that the literacy numeracy skills of 25 female students showed an excellent category with an average score of 84.7. Students with the highest score can fulfilled two to three indicators, while students with low score of literacy numeracy skills’ test only fulfilled one indicator. The unfulfillment of indicators is caused by student errors include: 1) Not writing known data information and asked, 2) Wrong in solving the problem, 3) Wrong when calculating, and 4) Not writing conclusions on the results of the answers obtained.

This research uses a quantitative approach, with a correlational design of ex post facto research. Sampling in this study was carried out by proportional random sampling. Data collection techniques in this study were questionnaire and test. The questionnaire sheet used in this study was divided into two, namely the mathematical-logical intelligence questionnaire sheet and the learning independence questionnaire sheet. The test is used to get data on learning outcomes in mathematics. Data analysis techniques using the F-test. The results of the analysis of research data indicate that mathematical-logical intelligence partially has no significant effect on student learning outcomes. Student learning independence is also partially there is no significant effect on mathematics learning outcomes. There is no effect of logical-mathematical intelligence and learning independence on mathematics learning outcomes.

Abstract

High energy requirements result in increased fuel prices. It is quite an impact on all sectors mainly engaged in the business world, because the cost of increasing production without increasing the purchasing power offset market. One effort that can be done is the use of alternative fuels economical. The question is bioethanol fuel, methanol and ethanol that requires an appropriate stove design for the fuel. To determine the level of fuel efficiency is needed stove heaters called “HD”. The purpose of this study was to determine the economic value of fuel use of methanol and ethanol on the stove “HD”, particularly in heating the chicken coop. The me thod used to determine the level of efficiency in the use of methanol and ethanol fuel is amethod of boiling water. Measurements carried out on several parameters, namely: the volume of water in a saucepan, water temperature before it is heated, the use of heavy fuel, fuel density, temperature difference, the total energy absorbed, the amount of energy absorbed, the minimum energy required, and the amount of water boiled. Based on mathematical analysis, concluded that the use of fuel ethanol has a boiling speeds higher than methanol. Although the time of boiling methanol fuel longer, but the use of methanol fuel is more economical. The use of methanol fuel content of 85% is more economical because of savings significantly which is Rp 544,984, 00 for broiler farms per 1000 larvae in one period of 40 days.

Abstract

Relational understanding constitutes students’ awareness of appropriate procedures to solve problems along with logical reasoning.  Itis pivotal to help students solve problems in mathematics. It is necessary that the teaching of mathematics be directed to achieve relational understanding. Accordingly, students are capable of solving complicated problems in mathematics. This current research aims at analyzing and describing relational understanding and the patterns of answering questions of the fifth graders on integer operation. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study as the research design. Further, three students belonging to the fifth grade of Elementary School in Malang City, Indonesia, were set up as the research subjects. A test was administered to measure the subjects' relational understanding. All collected data were analyzed using an interactive technique. The result has indicated that the highly-proficient student was able to show excellent relational understanding. Besides, it was shown that the fairly-proficient student could show good relational understanding. The lowly-proficient student was shown to be able to achieve only half of the holistic criteria set for relational understanding. The patterns of answering the questions demonstrated by all students in all levels included jotting down the models, completing the models, and answering the questions. The highly-proficient student understood the information and wrote it down. Whilst the fairly-proficient student understood the information without translating it into the written form. At last, the lowly-proficient student did not pronounce any signals of understanding of the information
