Abstract

The HARMONI provides a multicomponent approach to measure Indonesia student well-being adapted from the PROSPER framework. We used the measure to describe the overall well-being and the seven components of HARMONI: outcomes, resilience, relationships, purpose, positivity, strengths, and engagement. A cross-sectional study was conducted with socio-demographic and school characteristics as predictors of student well-being. A total of 1579 students from 511 senior high schools completed an online survey. We found that overall well-being based on the HARMONI profile was positive (M=3.92; SD=0.53), with all components showing a trend of optimal well-being. Student well-being is significantly predicted by gender, school area, and school type but not associated with parent income, parent education, grade level, and student major (R2model 1 = .0299). The effect of gender and school type varies by grade level (R2model 2 = .0342;R2model 3 = .0347). The HARMONI can be used not only for measuring well-being but also as a structure for character education. The findings suggest that designing HARMONI-based character education needs to accommodate gender differences, grade levels, school areas, and school types.

Abstract

Mathematization competencies among prospective teachers, focusing on their ability to construct and communicate mathematical arguments, are crucial for effective mathematics education. This exploratory study aimed to produce qualitative-descriptive data on prospective teachers' competencies of mathematization in teacher education programs. The study employs word problems based on everyday-life problems that are solved by the mathematization process and assessed based on three indicators of mathematization competencies. The data were collected from three groups of prospective teachers in the first, third, and fifth semesters, respectively, in the mathematics education study program at a public University in Kediri, Indonesia. The findings revealed that while all prospective teachers demonstrated basic skills in identifying assumptions and organizing problems, fifth-year students exhibited better abilities in mathematical argumentation, particularly in generalizing mathematical problems. These advanced abilities included the formulation, analysis, and presentation of proficient mathematical arguments, indicating a deeper understanding and mastery of mathematization that developed progressively throughout their education. The results of this study underscore the importance of sustained and structured learning experiences in mathematics teacher education programs to foster higher-order mathematical competencies. This study enriches the mathematics education literature by illustrating the growth of argumentation skills in mathematization among prospective teachers, highlighting the need for educational curricula that emphasize these advanced skills.

Abstract

Problem-solving skills are essential in facing current challenges and developments. This study aims to describe students' ability to solve mathematical problems in the form of matrix story problems. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method and involves 93 eleventh-grade high school students. The instrument used is a written test consisting of two problem-solving questions. Subject selection was based on the results of a problem-solving ability test. Data collection utilized the problem-solving ability test questions and interviews. Qualitative data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The analysis was conducted according to Polya's model. The results showed that 7 students (8%) had very good mathematical problem-solving skills, as they were able to complete all four stages of Polya's model. Another 19 students (20%) were categorized as having good skills, although they only completed three stages of Polya's model without performing the final verification stage. Meanwhile, 30 students (32%) were only able to complete two stages of Polya's model without fully understanding the problem and without conducting a recheck, thus categorized as having adequate problem-solving skills. Additionally, 37 students (40%) were only able to complete one stage of Polya's model without fully understanding the problem, without formulating a plan, executing the plan, and without conducting a recheck. Thus, they were categorized as having poor problem-solving skills. This indicates that each student's ability to understand the problem, develop a problem-solving plan, implement the problem-solving plan, and check the answers is still in the low category. Therefore, it can be concluded that students' mathematical problem-solving abilities are still low. It is hoped that teachers can train students in learning, conduct effective learning, and thus improve students' problem-solving abilities.
