Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of recovery management on the arm muscle strength of the basketball team of SMA Negeri 8 Malang. Using an experimental "one-group pretest-posttest design," the study involved 24 athletes, consisting of 12 male and 12 female participants. The measurements of muscle strength were conducted using an expanding dynamometer before and after the implementation of recovery management techniques, including Cold Water Immersion (CWI), foam rolling, elevation, and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF). The results showed a significant improvement in the pull muscle strength of female athletes, with an average pretest score of 18.66 and a posttest score of 20.58, yielding p = 0.029. However, no significant improvement was found in their push muscle strength, as the pretest score was 16.66 and the posttest score was 19.33, yielding p = 0.056. For male athletes, no significant difference was found in muscle strength for either pull (p = 0.183) or push (p = 0.232). These findings indicate that recovery management was more effective for improving the pull muscle strength of female athletes, potentially due to physiological, hormonal, and muscle adaptation differences. The study concludes that recovery management effectively enhances arm muscle strength, particularly in the pull muscles of female athletes, but is less effective for other conditions, as shown by the pretest and posttest analysis of male athletes, where no significant improvement in arm muscle strength was observed.

Abstract

Coaches need to consider various competencies such as conditioning, training program skills and tactics, when planning sessions, despite the rare impact of the menstrual cycle on the effectiveness of competitive training performance of female athletes in Central Java. The impact of the menstrual cycle of female athletes, the training strategies used by female athletes to minimize the impact of training programs that provide obstacles to large interactions with coaches require consideration. This research aims to determine the experiences of elite female athletes regarding the menstrual cycle while competing in Central Java and to understand female athletes' perceptions of the influence of the menstrual cycle on performance and achievement in sports competitions. A questionnaire containing 36 items was developed. Univariate analysis was used to analyze the data. Thirty-six valid responses from Central Javanese female athletes aged 14 to 27 years, with an average age of 19 years, were received. Menstrual pain (72.3%) and pre-menstrual symptoms (72.2%). Contraceptive use by 2.8% of female athletes. Those reporting heavy menstrual bleeding (25%). Most athletes reported that neither they nor their coaches changed training due to the menstrual cycle (61.1%). Most athletes (50%) discussed with female coaches only. Given the perceived impact on performance and potential risks of contraceptive use during pregnancy, teens, coaches, and athletes need to have a more open dialogue around the menstrual cycle

Abstract

Background: Menstruation can be an obstacle for athletes in sports activities, as female athletes continue to participate in training and competitions despite menstruating. This perception can lead to discrimination and a lack of understanding of the conditions faced by female athletes. Purpose of the Study: This study aims to understand how the menstrual cycle affects the physical performance and achievements of elite female athletes. Method: This research employs a non-experimental quantitative approach. The type of research is descriptive quantitative, using a survey approach. The population of this study comprises female athletes who have experienced the menstrual cycle from various sports disciplines in East Java Province, with sample totaling 103 elite female athletes. The instrument used in this research is a questionnaire addressed to the sample of female athletes. Results: The findings reveal that most elite female athletes in East Java, particularly in combat sports, experience irregular menstrual cycles and menstrual pain. However, these factors do not significantly impact their training and performance, with most athletes neither using hormonal contraception nor experiencing major issues while training during menstruation. Conclusion: Most elite female athletes in East Java experience irregular menstrual cycles and pain on the first day. However, training during menstruation generally does not have a significant impact on their performance. Implications: Training program management should consider the menstrual cycle to help elite female athletes maintain optimal performance and manage pain when competing.
