Abstract

Developing a leaf-area estimation model for vegetable cultivars in wetlands is essential to optimizing agricultural cultivation practices. This study aims to develop a non-destructive model for leaf area estimation in wetland vegetable cultivars (velvetleaf (Limnocharis flava) and kangkong (Ipomoea aquatica)) using regression-based models. The plants were cultivated in a wetland system. Measurements of leaf length and width were taken on all leaves of each plant, using the product of length and width (L×W) as predictor. The regression models for estimating leaf area were adjusted from linear, zero-intercept linear, quadratic, and power. The optimal model was evaluated using the determination coefficient (R2) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results showed that the most reliable regression model for estimating velvetleaf leaf area was linear regression with the equation y = 0.881LW - 7.615 (R2 = 0.954; RSME = 7.916), and the power model for kangkong leaf area, with the equation y = 0.9407LW0.9309 (R2 = 0.970; RSME = 1.695). Differences in leaf shape among plant species result in different accuracies of leaf area estimation models. Thus, the model should be useful to guide future research and practical applications in monitoring leaf growth and determining harvest time.

Abstract

Under suboptimal conditions, plants generally respond differently to survive. Plant responses include changes in morphology, anatomy, and physiology. This study aimed to investigate the response of eggplant to lack of oxygen due to shallow water table and waterlogging in the generative stage and explored their adaptability to be cultivated in riparian wetlands. This research was conducted from October 2017 to January 2018 in an experimental pond in the village of Demang Lebar Daun Palembang and at the Postgraduate Integrated Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Palembang. This study used a randomized block design with a shallow water table and waterlogging treatments: control (field capacity), water tables of 13 cm, 8 cm, and 3 cm below the soil surface (bss), and waterlogging 2 cm above the soil surface. The results showed that the water table 3 cm bss and waterlogging decreased the relative rate of leaf expansion, specific leaf fresh weight, and specific leaf water content. On the sixth day of the waterlogging treatment, the chlorophyll content decreased by 31.29%. On the other hand, the proline content in the leaves reached the highest level of concentration. After the sixth day, the chlorophyll content increased while the proline content decreased, and the eggplant recovered. Water table 3 cm bss and waterlogging caused the formation of aerenchyma tissue in the roots, which started one day after the treatment. Eggplant is an adaptive crop with a fairly high tolerance for shallow water tables and waterlogging. Keywords: adaptation, aerenchyma, proline, riparian wetland, tolerance

Abstract

Vegetable cultivation in tropical riparian wetland is currently suboptimal due to unpredictability of water dynamics. Chili pepper is a fruity vegetable that is often cultivated in tropical riparian wetland but is often constrained by conditions of excessive water saturation, such as shallow water tables, waterlogging and submergence in the transition period (dry to rainy season). The aim of this research was to study the morpho-agronomy of varieties of chili peppers under waterlogging stress during the early vegetative stage. A Plot Design was used in this experiment. The main plot consisted of (1) control (field capacity, regularly watering) and (2) waterlogging (simulated by adding water to the growing substrate until a thin layer of water was visible above the substrate surface during four days, followed by a seven-day recovery time during seven days). The subplot consisted of three chili pepper varieties, namely Laris, Romario, and Takanotsume (Japanese variety). Results of this study revealed that waterlogging stress significantly affected root length, number of leaves, total leaf area, chlorophyll content (SPAD), root fresh weight, shoot fresh weight, root dry weight, and shoot dry weight after stress and after recovery time. Meanwhile, chili pepper varieties were only significantly affected the total leaf area and chlorophyll content (SPAD). The total dry weight of Romario and Takanotsume before stress, after stress and after recovery did not significantly increase under waterlogging stress, whereas the total dry weight of Laris was precisely increased, indicating that vegetative growth is continuing. The Laris was categorized as one of chili pepper varieties that had medium tolerance to waterlogging stress at the early vegetative stage. Abstract

There are uncountable research activities and technology development efforts have been carried out in Indonesia; however, very limited economically and/or socially beneficial technologies have been created. Very few indigenous technologies have been used in producing goods and providing services, including in agricultural sector. This problem is rooted on facts that most of the technologies developed are not relevant to real needs and/or problems of domestic farmers. Even if the technologies are substantially relevant; in many cases, they are not finacially affordable by domestic farmers, do not significantly increase profit if used, and/or less competitive compared to similar available technologies in the market. Limited availability of resources, at present and even more scarse in the future, elevates expectation on technology to contribute in establishing inclusive, productive, and sustainable agricultural development. To assure that developed technology will be relevant to the needs and contribute to agricultural development, farmers ought to be play significant active roles during priority setting, planning, and developing the technology. The real issues at present are increase in food demand as consequence of population growth and conversion of arable lands for uses in other sectors. These trends have led to intensifying agricultural activities on suboptimal lands. Efforts to increase agricultural productivity in suboptimal lands should not jeopardize sustainable function of the ecosystem and participation of local farmers. Sustainability and inclusivity should be maintained while increasing productivity. Traditional knowledge and local wisdom have to be treated as reference for developing technology for establishing productive agriculture on suboptimal lands.

Abstract

Lindiana, et al. Rice Cultivation Images by Local Farmers in Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. JLSO 5(2):153-158. Plans and efforts in increasing rice productivity at riparian wetlands can be commenced by introducing relevant technologies; however, the selected technologies should be based on real needs or problems faced by local farmers. As a pre-requisite, if the needs and problems are not comprehensively understood, government intervention to introduce new technology may not be effective since the technology may not be relevant or affordable to local farmers. Objectives of this research are to analyze characteristics of the wetlands, farmer’s adoption capacity, and technological preferences. The research was conducted in five villages at Pemulutan District. Qualitative Grounded Theory and Quantitative Survey were employed through dialogues with 100 local farmers.  Results of the research indicated that any effort to increase riparian wetland productivity should consider the unpredictability of flood occurrences and prolonged drought. These unfavorable conditions have limited local farmers to only grow rice once per year. Local farmers were almost solely depending on rice and cultivation of other crops were rarely observed, except limited vegetables grown on elevated border of paddy fields.

JLSO 6(2):126-133.The purpose of this research was to utilize potential  waste of local resource especially mineral bottle as a floating raft, to train farmer to construct it, to increase farm production, to socialize how to produce inexpensive, widely available, good quality and environmental friendly floating raft made of mineral bottle, and to evaluate farmers response. This research was conducted at Pelabuhan Dalam Village, Subdistrict of Pemulutan, District of Ogan Ilir.  The step of this research were socialization to farmers, display the system of floating cultivation and farmers perception evaluation.  The results showed that the system was prospective to be developed based on statements of interested farmers.  One of the important finding was that the system was easy to maintenance. The farmers were optimistic that the system could be developed by them selves.

Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal : Journal of Suboptimal Lands  9(2): 167-174.Study on black sticky rice cultivation in South Sumatera is seldom carry out. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of water table and population density on the growth of rice during seedling preparation at floating seedbed; furthermore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of transplanting time on vegetative growth of black sticky rice. The research was started in May 2018 in Palembang. Black sticky variety used in this research was Toraja variety. The raft used is made from 1,5 l plastic bottles which are arranged to reach  2x1 meters in size. This study was conducted by two stages. The first stage was for water table and population density treatments laid on split plot design. The second stage was for transplanting time utilizing completely randomized factorial design. Statistically, results showed water table and population density significantly influensced root length of black sticky rice and transplanting time 14 DAS haad an effect on the leaf length , leaf width and leaf area.

Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal : Journal of Suboptimal Lands 9(2): 184-191.Riparian wetland is highly available and potential suboptimal lands for an alternative solution in extending agricultural activity, but several constrains need to be resolved. The objective of this study was to improve the diversification of vegetables for increasing riparian wetland with utilizing floating cultivation system. This study was conducted From November until December 2019 in Jakabaring (104°46’4” E; 3°01’35” S) Palembang. The design of experiments used in this study was arranged in split plot-completely randomized design with 2 factors (main plot and sub-plot). Main plot was the height of water table, namely: R1 (1 cm upper raft surface), R5 (5 cm upper raft surface), and R10 (10 cm upper raft surface). Sub-plot was the size of celery tiller, i.e., B1 (big size) and B2 (small size). Each combination treatment consisted of five replication. Results showed that there was no any significant effect on water table and tiller size combination treatments in all observed variables, such as: plant height, leaf area, number of petioles, root length, fresh weight, and dry weight of shoot and roots. But, root length was significant different in water table treatment. Therefore, cultivated celery using floating culture system from tiller of parent plants can be an alternative to increase agriculture activity by shortening the planting period to increase vegetable diversification in riparian wetland.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to study and cluster of Jatropha germplasm belonging to University of Sriwijaya. This research was conducted from September 2007 until July 2008. The research used 14 accessions of Jatropha taken from some regions in Indonesia, namely: Komering, Palembang, Yogyakarta, Indralaya, ATP2, Pontianak, Lahat, Pagaralam, Curup, Lampung, Medan Aceh Besar, Pidi and Gorontalo. Accessions of Jatropha curcas L. were planted at Agro Techno Park (ATP) Bakung village, Indralaya Utara district Ogan Ilir, South Sumatera using Randomized Complete Block Design. RAPD analysis using 20 primers was done at RGCI (Research Group on Crop Improvement), Bogor Agricultural University. Dendrogram based on RAPD analysis produced five groups that were: the first group was Komering, Lahat, Pidi, Indralaya, Aceh Besar, Pontianak and Curup. The second group was Palembang and ATP2. The third group was Pagaralam, Gorontalo, and Medan. Lampung was included in to fourth group. The fifth group was Yogyakarta. Dendrogram from morphological marker had also five groups. First group was: Komering, Indralaya, Pontianak. Lahat, and Pagaralam. Second group was: Palembang, Lampung, Pidi, Medan, and ATP2. Third group was: Curup. Fourth group was: Yogyakarta and Gorontalo. Fifth group was: Aceh Besar. The difference of member from each groups between dendrogram using RAPD and morphological markers indicated that the bands resulted from RAPD did not have relation with characters observed. Abstract

The 3-in-1 vegetable-fish cultivation is an innovative cultivation system that integrates floating and climbing vegetable cultivation with fish culture. This cultivation is a solution to the problem of narrow land in urban areas for vegetable-fish cultivation to create: a) Fish farming in a concrete pool at the bottom position, b) Shade-tolerant vegetables cultivated using a floating culture system, and c) Climbing vegetables on a dedicated netted-frames as high as 2 meters above the pool. The dimensions of the pool correspond to the available land. The floating raft was constructed using 69 units of 1.5 L plastic bottles as floaters, assembled into a raft with a surface area of 2 m2. The buoyancy capacity of the raft is 120 kg. The raft has been patented with Granted patent No. IDP 000065141. The community service activities are a) Open demonstrations for 3-in-1 vegetable-fish farming installations; b) Socialization and assistance to communities interested in implementing it; and c) Collection of data and information for evaluation and publication materials. Static demonstration activities during one cycle of cultivation and socialization to three potential community groups, namely: a) Urban communities as the primary target; b) Journalists for more enlarging coverage of the dissemination; and c) Agricultural students for the learning process. Urban communities can adopt the dissemination of land optimization through 3-in-1 vegetable-fish cultivation on urban land. Community interest in this cultivation system innovation is outstanding, as represented by the community's enthusiasm for this program.
