Abstract

This research examines the empirical model of external debt, exchange rate, and unemployment in selected ASEAN Countries during 1980-2017. The countries included Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. The data were collected from the World Bank publications. The ARDL-ECM and Granger Causality Test (GCT) were employed to address the research objectives. The findings indicated that there were short-term effects on each empirical model (external debt, exchange rate, and unemployment). Furthermore, the stability test exhibited that the models were precise and stable. The GCT result showed that there was a causal between external debt, exchange rate, and unemployment, especially in Indonesia. Moreover, the linkages between external debt, exchange rate, and unemployment in selected ASEAN Countries were co-movement. Therefore, the governments are expected to emphasis on macroeconomic policies, such as pro-stability of the exchange rate, external debt risk management, and pro-poor.

Abstract

The digital economy (e-commerce) is an important tool to enhance SMEs, with various limitations, including digital literacy and SMEs owner characteristics. The novelty of this study is to provide a deeper understanding and new evidence of the linkage between digital literacy and e-commerce for SMEs. The future expected impact of this study is the government should facilitate and improve the level of digital literacy and e-commerce for SMEs. In particular, this study sets a question, namely: Does technology literacy lead the digital economy (e-commerce) for SMEs? Therefore, this study investigates the determinant factors of e-commerce by moderating variable of digital literacy among SMEs in the Malang region (Malang City, Malang Regency, and Batu City). The sample size is 43 respondents actively involved in business training and mentoring by SME associations, business incubators, and local governments. The respondents have social media and e-commerce to stimulate their sales. The sampling method was purposive sampling. The sample was collected through a survey during March - April 2024. Path analysis was applied to elaborate the study objectives. The findings reveal that the indicators constructing digital literacy and e-commerce are valid and reliable. The digital literacy was influenced by the age of SME owner and economic media. Besides, the digital literacy has a positive and significant impact on e-commerce at the 1% level. E-commerce is also determined by firm establishment. This condition means that an increase in the quality of digital literacy can lead to a rise in e-commerce utilisation. The implications of this study suggest that SME associations, business incubators and local governments facilitate the improvement of SMEs' digital literacy and their ability to utilise e-commerce appropriately to grow their businesses in the long term. In addition, SMEs should improve their digital business skills through various training and business mentoring conducted by local governments and business incubators.

Abstract

Fiscal sustainability can be determined and assessed using financial technology (FinTech). Consequently, a new indicator of fiscal sustainability can be constructed. This study also estimates threshold levels of public debt and budget deficit by considering institutions for 88 developing and 35 developed countries in 2014 and 2017. The principal component analysis (PCA) and the cross-section threshold regression are employed. The main findings revealed that the threshold levels of public debt-to-GDP ratio for developed and developing countries in 2014 were 100.37% and 63.04%, while that in 2017 were 90.09% and 84.28%, respectively. Moreover, the threshold levels of budget deficit-to-GDP ratio for developed and developing countries in 2014 were -3.04% and -1.24%, while those in 2017 were -0.97% and -5.75%, respectively. Therefore, policymakers should emphasize a certain public debt and budget deficit level to warrant a fiscally sustainable level.JEL Classification: C13, E62, H60 How to Cite:Cahyadin, M., Sarmidi, T., Khalid, N. & Law, S. Abstract

Farmer competence is the ability of farmers to think, behave, and act in managing farming businesses. The competence can involve various stakeholders (actors) and types of farmers’ competencies. Therefore, this study investigates the role of stakeholders in farmers' competencies and assesses the rank of farmers’ competencies in Magelang Regency (highland) and Pati Regency (lowland). Both regions have a significant number of millennial farmers in Central Java Province. The sample for this study was 12 people (institutions) selected using purposive sampling. They provided their perceptions of farmer competencies through in-depth interviews. The interviews were conducted during July–August 2023. MACTOR and AHP methods were applied to measure the stakeholders’ role and rank the types of farmer competencies. The findings reveal that all actors agreed on developing farmer competencies through collaboration and business partnerships. Some stakeholders have the strongest level of convergence, consisting of local government agricultural agencies, local government industry agencies, farmer communities, and the banking industries. In contrast, the strongest divergence occurs with sellers of agricultural products and local public figures. In addition, the ranking or priority of farmer competencies from the top is innovative, communication, and entrepreneurial competencies. Policy implications emphasize increasing the level of collaboration and partnership between agricultural business stakeholders and local governments to enhance and guarantee the quality of farmer competencies.
