Abstract

Introduction & Aim: Diabetes Mellitus patients with uncontrolled blood glucose levels for a long time will experience peripheral neuropathy complications with symptoms of tingling, numbness, pain in the feet, and disability in carrying out daily activities. The purpose of this community service was to evaluate Buerger Allen Exercise and 5 Pillars’ education on the knowledge and physical health performance of peripheral neuropathy diabetic patients. Method of Activity: Buerger Allen Exercise and 5 Pillars’ education was conducted on 28 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy who had previously been examined at the Gundih regional health center. This community service was carried out for 6 weeks at Jalan Kedinding RT 10 RW 01 Bubutan Surabaya with several stages of activity, namely: initial survey, education, application, assistance, and evaluation. Evaluated community behavior includes knowledge and physical health performance of diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients through measurement of the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI), peripheral oxygen saturation in the feet (StO2), and physical activity ability. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and Paired t-test to evaluate the results of the service. Results: There were changes in community behavior such as knowledge increased by 21.5% (p=0.000); normal ABI by 57.1% (p=0.004); totally independent physical activity ability 92.9% (p=0.003), and normal StO2 100% (p=0.000). Discussion: Buerger Allen Exercise Education Assistance and 5 Pillars of Diabetes Mellitus provide optimal results in the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients to prevent other complications such as diabetic ulcers, and amputation due to foot tissue death.

Abstract

Introduction & Aim: An unhealthy lifestyle and inactivity are the main causes of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which disrupts the body's ability to metabolize glucose into energy. This community service project aims to assess type 2 diabetes patients' blood glucose levels and level of knowledge regarding Progressive Muscle Relaxation and the Five Pillars of education. Method of Activity: A 5-Pillars teaching program and progressive muscle relaxation were given to 25 type 2 diabetes patients who had previously visited the Bulak Community Health Center. This six-week community service project involved multiple stages of action, including an initial survey, education, application, assistance, and assessment, and it was conducted at Jalan Bulak Setro RT 02 RW 04 Bulak Surabaya. Community conduct is assessed based on knowledge and blood sugar levels. To assess the efficacy of the service, data were examined statistically using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The community behavior that this service can alter is demonstrated by the 100% increase in knowledge (p = 0.000) and the normal blood glucose levels of 64% of respondents (p = 0.004). Disscusion: For individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, progressive muscle relaxation education and the 5-pillars of diabetes mellitus therapy yield the best outcomes in terms of preventing complications like diabetic neuropathy. An extensive strategy to raise sufferers' awareness is to offer information and support so that individuals with DMT2 can adopt a healthier lifestyle in the hopes that their blood glucose levels will return to normal.

Abstract

Introduction & Aim: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence, including in Wonokromo Village, Surabaya, where high-risk factors such as unhealthy eating patterns and low physical activity are common. Spiritual approaches and community-based health education are expected to improve DM management and patients' quality of life. This study aims to optimize DM management through spiritual approaches and community-based health education. Method: The activity was conducted with a participatory community-based approach, involving 85 participants diagnosed with DM or at high risk. The intervention included interactive health education on DM management, spiritual approaches through reflection and prayers, and capacity building for health cadres. Evaluation was done by measuring blood sugar levels and post-tests to assess knowledge improvement and behavioral changes. Results: The results showed that 90% of participants adopted a healthy lifestyle after the education, and 75% felt more motivated to take care of themselves. Additionally, 85% of members of the “Sahabat Sehat Diabetes” community actively participated in the activities, and 100% of cadres were able to conduct early detection and self-management education for DM. Discussion: Continuous health education, spiritual approaches, and social support enhancement proved effective in improving participants' knowledge, motivation, and medication adherence. The capacity building of health cadres is key to the sustainability of this program, which can be expanded to the wider community.
