Abstract

The increasing volume of produced water from oil and gas production requires effective handling before reinjection or disposal. Produced water contains minerals, oil, and other contaminants, making separation processes at refineries insufficient. This study investigates the use of reverse demulsifiers, specifically surfactants (Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylate – APEOs and Natrium Lignosulfonate – NLS), to separate emulsions in produced water. Surfactants reduce surface tension between oil and water, facilitating contaminant removal. Using a jar test apparatus, experiments varied surfactant dosage, stirring speed, and stirring time to determine optimal conditions for achieving water quality standards. Results indicate differences between APEOs and NLS in removing contaminants. APEOs, at 5 ppm, 130 rpm, and 5 minutes, achieved a COD concentration of 80.33 mg/L, while NLS, at 5 ppm, 220 rpm, and 10 minutes, yielded 77.48 mg/L. Both are well below the quality standard of 200 mg/L, proving the effectiveness of this approach. This study highlights the potential of APEOs and NLS as reverse demulsifiers for produced water treatment. Proper application could enable safe reuse or environmentally sound disposal, providing an effective solution to managing produced water in the oil and gas industry.

Abstract

Indoor thermal comfort in tropical urban houses is important to manage because it determines the quality of life for the inhabitants. However, it is prone to sudden changes of temperature, especially in a developing country, such as Indonesia, where indoor air circulation is mainly supported by windows. This research aims to evaluate the indoor thermal comfort in Indonesian urban houses, and to analyse the correlation of outdoor temperature and the number of windows on the indoor temperature. This study took place in the Greater Bogor Area with a total of five houses. Outdoor and indoor temperatures were monitored in four areas for each home, which are the living room, bedroom, toilet, and terrace. The dry and wet temperatures were analysed to determine the indoor thermal comfort status based on ASHRAE (The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers)-55. The correlation between outdoor temperature and the number of windows on indoor thermal comfort was analysed using multiple linear regression. Three of the five houses had areas that met the standard for thermal comfort. The areas were mainly the terrace and the bedroom. The average (standard deviation) of outdoor dry and wet temperatures was 27.79 oC (1.03 oC), and 25.59 oC (1.56 oC), respectively. While for the indoors, the average for dry and wet temperatures were 27.96 oC (1.87 oC), and 25.39 oC (2.31 oC). Outdoor temperature and number of windows showed insignificant correlation with indoor temperature (R2: 0.1448; adj R2: 0.08145; p>0.121), opposing the previous studies on the effect of outdoor temperature and number of windows on indoor temperature. Apart from this finding, the effect of windows/ventilation's presence on indoor thermal comfort cannot be undermined. As ventilation serves as a part of human adaptation to heat, it is becoming more important amidst the increased extreme heat caused by climate change.

Abstract

Deep sea water (DSW) has the potential characteristics for nutrient supplement in hydroponics cultivation. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the application of DSW as a nutrient supplement for tomato cultivation in hydroponics system. Tomatoes were grown on 4 beds in nutrient film technique (NFT) system circulated with 1.5 dS m-1(control), 10 dS m-1 15 dS m-1 and 20 dS m-1 of nutrient solution, respectively.  DSW was supplemented into nutrient solution of control to obtain high EC level. Fresh weight of fruits decreased varied from 10-20% by increasing DSW concentration in nutrient solution, but the effect of the treatment was not found on size of 3rd truss fruits.  The density of fruits increased as the DSW concentration increased in nutrient solution. Tomato stiffness of treated plants had almost the same value among EC levels although different among 3 trusses.  Fruit quality parameters increased by increasing the DSW concentration in nutrient solution. Treated plants circulated with EC 20 dS m-1 supplemented nutrient solution for 2 weeks produced tomatoes with highest soluble solids, 8.0% Brix or increased 30% of control (1st truss).  However there were no significant effect on fruits of 2nd and 3rd trusses.  DSW could be used as nutrient supplement for hydroponics cultivation of tomato.     Key words :   Deep sea water, fruit quality, electrical conductivity, tomato
