Abstract

Wildlife hunting is important in satisfying people’s need for meat as a source of dietary protein as well as being of economic value to the studied communities. Many people in Indonesian New Guinea rely on the benefits obtained from the extraction of plants and animals in the tropical forests, including hunting. This review aims to synthesise existing knowledge and identify areas that are fundamental to the body of knowledge on Indigenous hunting that has been integrated into many forest people societies in Indonesian New Guinea. People keep a relationship with nature by harmonising Indigenous hunting and cultural background. Available food source from wildlife and limited access to livestock were the major reason to acquire wild animals for consumption through hunting. Throughout of Indonesian New Guinea, the commercial hunting provide more opportunities for income generation. Indigenous hunting has long been part of cultural life of forest, providing a source of dietary protein to the household, and offer forms of income generation to the studied communities. Abstract

Stakeholders and their networks play prominent roles in developing the agricultural sector. For instance, the economic, social, and environmental indicators of farms are sustained by the involvement of stakeholders and other relevant parties. Therefore, exploring the importance and roles of actors has become strategic and vital to recognize. This research aims to determine the strategic stakeholders' typology and mapping using their network analyses on integrated crops-livestock farming systems in West New Guinea. The study was carried out in Manokwari using the focus group discussion on twenty various represented individuals, groups, and mass institutions. The queries discussed were based on background, resources delivery, inter-connectivity amongst actors, intervention, and innovation. The result showed that the stakeholders in mixed crop-livestock are dominated by individuals' that privately manage the farms officially in accordance with the laws. The result also showed that the farming systems in West New Guinea, experience real threats which need to be lowered to mitigate the turn-back effect. The top five shared resources are access, satisfaction, power, knowledge, and time allocation. These resources tend to stay longer to sustain the strong needs of the farms, which are dominated by positive similarity with varying ranges of correlation ranging from negative, neutral to positive. This is because the stakeholders are reluctant to deliver the intervention and innovation, therefore, those with low interest and power need to be promoted to high interest and power by using aids, guidance, and services from each actor in the mixed crop-livestock farms business.

Abstract

Pakan ternak perlu diintensifkan ketersediaannya. Potret bisnis masih belum optimal karena akses pasar belum dikuasai peternak. Dengan demikian pendampingan teknis perlu diberikan. Kata kunci: potret peternakan pesisir, akses pasar, persepsi beternak, veteriner, swill feed, Fakfak Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the portrait of livestock production in the neighborhood environment as a basis for livestock commodity development and animal husbandry development, to determine the needs and potential of animal husbandry development in Fakfak Regency. The method in this research is descriptive survey technique. The sample of respondents selected as many as 35 heads of families who do livestock raising work in the village of Pasir Putih. The object of observation is the socio-cultural aspects of the farmer, livestock production and perceptions and needs of livestock development. The results of the study showed that the socio-cultural portrait of farmers in the Pasir Putih village was sufficient in terms of age (age) and experience, while the level of education needed to be pursued by attending training / counseling related commodities. Livestock and animal pens need to be provided by the government with an alternative village fund program. Portrait of livestock production is not optimal, marked by the low number of livestock production per parent per birth of several commodities. Animal feed needs to be intensified. The business portrait is still not optimal because market access is not yet controlled by farmers. Thus technical assistance needs to be provided. Keywords: portrait of coastal farming, market access, livestock perception, veterinary, swill feed, Fakfak

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate opportunities for improving pig farming systems both in urban and rural areas of Manokwari, Papua Barat province-Indonesia. The research started by assessing the perspectives and perceptions of farmers in group meetings. A number of 386 pigs in cummulative was weighing and measured for life body weights and body condition scores. Papuan pig farmers were represented by Jayapura, Biak, Ambai and Ansus(Serui), Mee(Nabire), Arfak(Manokwari)and Ayamaru(Sorong)tribes. Non-Papuan pig farmers identified with ethnic groups of Batak, Toraja, Manado and Flores. The highest numbers of pigs kept were by semi-penned pig farmers, followed by pen and restrained pig farmers. About two hours per day was devoted to work in the restrained, semi-penned and pen pig keeping systems, while less than 1.5 hours per day was allocated by free-range pig farmers. In urban areas, feeding sources were kitchen and restaurant waste, and likewise crops and agriculture residues were in rural areas. Supplements and concentrates were used on a limited scale. Agricultural residues used were cassava, banana, taro, corn, grain and vegetable wastes. Litter sizes in the four pig farming systems were in average of 6 piglets/farrow/sow. Body condition scores were higher in pen pig keeping, i.e. 2.9 to 3, followed by semi-pen pigs, i.e. 2.1 to 3, free-range pigs, 2.1-2.8 and restrained pigs, i.e. 1.8 and 2.5 at different age levels. Economical and social quantitatives need further studies.

Abstract

. Abstract Cattle is one of the top priority animal agriculture in Indonesia. It has played significant roles in economical aspect of Total revenues. Those are due to stakeholders’ involvement. Abstract

The research was conducted in the Maruni limestone forest habitat. The observation plots were carried out at an altitude of 35 masl to> 212 masl. Observations were made 2 times every day (day and night). The method of calculating diversity is done using the Shannon-Wieners Index and the species population is calculated using the Alikodra formula. 11 species were found that belong to the Varanidae, Boidae, Gekkonidae, Ranidae, and Hylidae families. The diversity of wildlife in the Maruni limestone location follows the altitude of the habitat. Reptiles do not differ according to height. The most common types are in the class of lizards, monitor lizards, and frogs. The types of herpetofauna that can be found are carnivores and are not protected. This type of monitor lizard can be found in abundance in low areas to an altitude of> 200 meters above sea level. Meanwhile, monitor lizards can be found in wet forests and near water sources. Similar to lizards, frogs inhabit wet or watery areas. The diversity of wildlife species in limestone habitats in each class of Reptiles is 18%. The population of herpetofauna species found varied between 25-1200 individuals.
