Abstract

This study investigated ELT students in one of the universities in Indonesia’s perspective on their reading comprehension skills according to the aspects on Barrett’s Taxonomy. There are five aspects such as literal comprehension, reorganization, inferential comprehension, evaluation, and appreciation. This study also investigated what reading comprehension they need to study the most. The participant of this study is 36 students from ELE 2021 cohort. Their perception is based on their extensive reading activity using the stories in XReading website. The quantitative survey design is employed in this study and the researcher distributed a questionnaire as an instrument for this study. The researcher calculated the frequency of distributions and percentages, then described and summarized the result of the data analysis in the form of narratives. The study shows that the participants of this study had positive responses towards the use of the stories in XReading website for practicing their reading comprehension skills. Based on the responses given by the respondents, most of them agreed that XReading helps them to practice those five reading comprehension aspects based on Barrett’s Taxonomy. This study shows that XReading website is recommended for the educators who want their students to practice reading comprehension aspects and for the students who want to practice the reading comprehension aspects independently.

Abstract

Evidence has shown that social and emotional learning (SEL) improves students’ behavior, attitudes, peer relationships, and academic outcomes. However, teachers have challenges in promoting SEL due to insufficient professional development and pedagogical strategies. Cooperative learning, a pedagogy promoting student-centered learning, has been suggested to help teachers foster students’ SEL. However, little research has been conducted to investigate cooperative learning alignment with SEL. Thus, this current study explores teachers’ perspectives on implementing cooperative learning to promote students’ SEL. Seven elementary school teachers implementing cooperative learning and SEL in their classrooms joined the study. A qualitative interpretative case study design was used. Teacher interviews as primary data, and field notes, teachers’ artefacts, lesson plans, and teaching videos were collected. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data from the teacher interviews and field notes. Four themes were generated: group roles, exploring potentials and weaknesses, meaningful interactions, and consensus decision-making. The findings suggest that cooperative learning through clear group roles promotes elementary school students’ self-awareness and social awareness, meaningful interactions, and consensus decision-making.

The data were collected in two weeks via two interviews and two field observations. The data collected were in the form of tape recording, field notes, pictures, and videos. Those data were qualitatively analyzed to answer the research questions. The result of the study is categorized in three main points. First, the school offers program that support the implementation of inclusive education, such as self-development program, and extra courses that facilitate SEN students’ development of basic life skills. There are ten classes assigned to accommodate at least one special need student in each class.   Second, when it comes to teaching English in inclusive classrooms, the teachers showed a lack of specific strategies, but they used game-based technology like Kahoot to make enjoyable learning.  The teachers faced challenges, like handling tantrums and moody students. Third, the result also shows that patience and sincerity are important when teaching SEN students.

Abstract

It is critical to comprehend and accommodate the English performance of visually impaired students (VIS), due to the variation of distinctive language learning factors, needs, and targets of each Malangnese VIS. This case study research explores teaching learning (TL) barriers, supports, learning targets, and needs in order to help develop media for long-term achievements. The study involved four teachers and one VIS at three special schools, the so-called Sekolah Luar Biasa A (SLB A) in Malang, Indonesia. Data were garnered through interviews and analyzed thematically. Results show that the inequality in English teaching, inadequate Braille sources, English chapters, and meeting reduction, as well as diverse VIS English competence, have impeded the overall TL process. On the other hand, classroom management, teacher and VIS Braille mastery, learning techniques, and English recognition have simultaneously backed up most of the inadequacy. The primary learning needs are providing ample Braille English sources, constructing daily life-based English themes and diverse learning materials for VIS at beginner and intermediate levels. This research aims to raise awareness and encourage collaboration among English educational parties and the stakeholders of SLB A in regenerating English TL experiences.

Abstract

Self-efficacy in writing is an important factor for a student-writer to accomplish a writing task. However, not all studies show that writing self-efficacy and writing achievement are positively related. The purpose of the study is to find out 1) the writing self-efficacy level of the second-year students of an English education study program in one of the private universities in Pasuruan Regency, East Java, Indonesia, and 2) the correlation between students’ writing self-efficacy and their writing performance. The research uses a correlational design.  The sample of the research was fifty students of English study program from one of private universities in Pasuruan regency, Easyt Java, Indonesia.  The instrument used to collect the data was the writing self-efficacy questionnaire developed by Prickel in 1994, test, Primary Trait Scoring (PTSG) rubric, and documentation of the student's essay. The questionnaire consists of 25 items about self-efficacy in writing with a five-point scale of answers. The result shows that the students’ self-efficacy level mainly falls in the moderate category (58%), while the rest fall in the high category (42%). The result of the correlation analysis shows that there is no correlation between the students’ writing self-efficacy and their writing achievement (r= -.020, n = 50, p = .892).  The result implies that writing teachers should continuously foster their students' writing self-efficacy by giving them sufficient practice opportunities, offering constructive feedback, as well as providing emotional and psychological support in time of difficulties.

Abstract

This study explores the practice of Inclusive Education in EFL context, especially in English teaching practices in the classrooms, along with the challenges, and solutions provided at one of public junior high schools in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, by showing how students with special education needs are supported. In this qualitative case study research, the tools used in data collection are semi-structured interviews and classroom observations concerning English teachers and students with SEN. The findings point out that the school accommodates SEN students by means of differentiated teaching, special materials, and adapted assessments. Yet, several challenges persist in the areas of lack of infrastructure, inadequate teacher training, and problems in classroom management. The research also encourages some practical solutions, for example, the formation of collaborative teams of teachers and better communication with parents. This study contributes to the insights of inclusive practices in EFL settings with recommendations on how teacher preparedness and resource allocation need to be improved to foster equitable learning environments.
