Abstract

Considering multiple analyses on the effectiveness of extensive reading (ER) in higher education, this study addresses the lack of empirical evidence regarding the implementation of ER in higher education, particularly in an Indonesian university. This study explored the importance of understanding how the integration of technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) in ER practices in a higher education context. Through a qualitative case study involving one lecturer from a state university in East Java, Indonesia, the data were obtained through interviews and classroom observations to facilitate triangulation and ensure its credibility, and then analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings demonstrated that ER was carried out at the university, aligning with the ER principles set forth by Day and Bamford (2002) and Hedgcock and Ferris (2009). Moreover, from the TPACK framework, technology mainly served as a resource, management system, and content delivery tool, facilitating smoother ER practices. The strategic combination of materials and teaching methods also supported ER activities, enabling students to follow instructions and meet course objectives efficiently. Thus, this research offered valuable insights for universities to implement ER courses, providing evidence-based practices for lecturers to optimize teaching methods, tools, and resources on ER practices in higher education settings.

Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which visuals and visual texts in the Merdeka curriculum EFL textbooks for grade XII depict the characteristics of a good Pancasila student. The research employs a qualitative approach and content analysis to examine the official textbook "Bahasa Inggris Life Today" published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture in 2022. The analysis focuses on how the visuals represent the six dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile, including faith, global diversity, mutual cooperation, independence, critical thinking, and creativity. Findings reveal that the textbook effectively illustrates these dimensions through various visual representations and assignments, promoting character development in accordance with the Pancasila values. However, some misrepresentations were identified, particularly regarding the depiction of the Baduy tribe, suggesting the need for further analysis in future studies. Ultimately, the textbook serves as a vital resource for implementing the Merdeka curriculum and fostering students' understanding of Pancasila value

Abstract

Having a positive attitude in writing is very important since the positive attitude will make the students approach writing in a good way and will enable them to finish the writing task well. Thus, an appropriate instrument to measure the writing attitude is needed. Yet, scarce research is dedicated to investigating the validity and reliability of the writing attitude scale. This research is intended to investigate the validity and reliability of the writing attitude scale adapted from Podsen (1997) which was originally developed from the Daly-Miller Writing Apprehension Test (Daly Miler, 1975b). The design of this study was an observational, non-experimental study with a cross-sectional design, in which the researchers focused on analyzing Podsens (1997) Writing Attitude Scale (WAS). The population of the study was 96 students who took the Essay Writing course in the English Department, at a public university in East Java. The data were in the form of numbers on an ordinal scale. The researchers used the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) to analyze the validity and Cronbach alpha to check the inter-item correlation coefficient in SPSS 25. The result of the study shows that the CVR analysis was 1, and all items in the questionnaire were valid (p=.000.000) as shown in the Pearson product-moment analysis. Secondly, the internal consistency of Podsens (1997) Writing Attitude Scale was high (r.877). This implies that the instrument is applicable because it possesses validity and is highly reliable in measuring students writing attitudes.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of inclusive education in English classrooms at a public senior high school in Malang, with a focus on the English teacher's instructional methods, teaching experiences, and SEN students challenges encountered in an inclusive setting. A case study design was employed, involving two SEN students and one English teacher. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The findings highlight several key points. First, the teacher taught English in three phases; pre, whilst, and post activity, occasionally provided additional support to an ADHD student when they faced difficulties. Second, no specific treatment was given for SEN students, as the teacher treated them similarly to their mainstream peers during instruction. Third, SEN students experienced various challenges, including difficulty following instructions, struggling with social interactions, issues in completing classroom assignments—either finishing too quickly but inaccurately, or having trouble in completing tasks—restlessness (such as fidgeting), and inconsistencies between oral and written performance. Overcoming these challenges require targeted interventions, including using simplified instructions, providing social skills training for SEN students, incorporating fidget tools, breaking tasks into manageable steps, and utilizing manageable oral and written assessments for SEN students.

Abstract

Diminished academic performance and an uptick in bullying necessitate heightened attention to fostering positive student interactions and skills. To address these issues, educators can effectively employ cooperative learning (CL) methods within their classes. This gap in the research underscores the need for a deeper investigation into the teachers’ implementations and weaknesses in CL practices. This research delved into the teachers’ understanding, implementations, and problems with CL in implementing Kurikulum Merdeka or Emancipated Curriculum (EC). It also examines how a professional development program influences teachers’ ability to integrate CL effectively. The twelve participants were English teachers from different places in Indonesia with diverse teaching career stages. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving questionnaires with statistical analysis using SPSS 30 and interviews through thematic analysis. Quantitative findings show that teachers’ activities align with the CL framework, while qualitative data reveal inconsistencies in actual practice. This contrast suggests a gap between perception and implementation, highlighting the need for targeted support to ensure meaningful CL application in classrooms.

Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties experienced by EFL students in writing essays for prose analysis, along with the strategies they use to overcome these challenges. This research used qualitative research with a case study design. The participants of the study were 14 students of the English Language and Literature department from one of the state universities in Malang, East Java. The data collection took two months. The instruments used were interviews, questionaires, observation, and documentation. The result shows that students face major challenges in essay writing, particularly in content and organization, such as making good thesis statements and conclusions, and moderate difficulties with grammar. However, they demonstrated sufficient vocabulary and mechanical skills. To address these issues, students reported employing different types of strategies. The most common were mind mapping, continuous practice, and peer discussions. Moderately used strategies included seeking feedback, using audiovisual resources, and consulting dictionaries. The least used were translating, watching YouTube videos, and using AI tools or application. These strategies were applied throughout the writing process—pre-writing, whilst writing, and post-writing—and students found them effective in improving their prose analysis essays.

Abstract

In EFL classrooms, each teacher is expected to be able to act professionally in teaching and assessing the students through the ability to control emotions. However, studies that capture such phenomenon are lacking. This study investigated the narratives of Indonesian EFL teachers’ emotional geographies who conducted online assessments using 'Funtainment Assessment' in 'Grammar' classes. The study employed a narrative inquiry as the design by collecting individual in-depth interview data over four months. Findings unveiled five aspects that influenced changes in the participants' emotional geographies: physical, moral, sociocultural, professional, and political. Participants had a variety of attitudes in response to the emotions that arose when assessing the students' grammar competence online. Interestingly, the participants experienced continuous adaptation to the practice of negotiation to the emotional changes Thus, it did not distract the professional developments they had done through agentive actions. The study's empirical results also suggest that the 'emotional geography dimensions' contributed to future teachers' professional developme
