Abstract

The experiment was conducted to determine the effectiveness of condensed tannin from sengon leafs extract in protection of Indigofera zollingeriana leafs meal protein (IZLMP). The experiment was conducted using a complete randomize design consisting of five treatments, four replications and two experimental units. The treatments was P0 : IZLMP +0% condensed tannin (CT), P1: IZLMP + 0.5% CT, P2: IZLMP + 1% CT, P3: IZLMP + 1.5% CT, P4: IZLMP + 2% CT. Parameters measured was N-ammonia, total protein, rumen undegradable protein (RUP) and ruminal pH. The experimental result showed that protection of IZLMP with CT decreased ammonia concentration, increasing total, RUP value, and without effect on ruminal pH. The experiment concluded that the use of CT from sengon leaf extract at a level of 2% was effectively used to protect the IZLMP from degradation by rumen microbes.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of stocking density on the performance of male laying hens reared with the pastured based system. One hundred and forty seven male laying hens strain Lohman brown age 14 days old put in 21 of 1m x 1m cage according to the treatment. The treatment used was stocking density consisting of K1: 5 bird/m2, K2: 7 bird/m2, K3: 9 bird/m2. The design used in this study was a Randomized Block Design (RAK). Parameters observed in the study were ration consumption (g/head/day), final weight (g/head), feed conversion and mortality (%). The results showed that the stocking density had a significant effect (P<0.05) on consumption, final weight and feed conversion but had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the mortality rate.

Abstract

Andisol is a volcanic soil with a medium texture and a high organic matter content, so it is generally loose. However, the majority of vegetable farmers in Kayu Aro Barat District, Kerinci Regency carry out intensive soil cultivation in intensive land use (planting throughout the year, 2-3 times/year). Unfortunately, the role of tillage in soil and water conservation (SWC) is almost non-existent and even detrimental. One approach in SWC is the application of conservation tillage to control soil compaction so that soil infiltration is maintained. The research aims to determine the rate and capacity of Andisol soil infiltration and several factors that influence it, due to differences in the intensity of land use and cultivation in vegetable farming in Kebun Baru Village, Kayu Aro Barat District. The research used an exploratory-descriptive survey method. Observation and soil sampling points were determined using purposive stratified random sampling covering flat to sloping land, intensive land use and cultivation (planting 2-3 times/year + land cultivation 2 times/year), semi-intensive (planting 1-2 times/year + land cultivation once/year), and non-intensive (planting 1-2 times /year + land cultivation once/2 years), each land is planted with potatoes every year with various planting patterns. Soil infiltration rate was measured using a Double Ring Infiltrometer, and infiltration capacity was estimated using the Horton Equation. Soil infiltration rate and capacity are respectively 26.5 cm/hour (very fast) and 8.12 cm/hour (as is the infiltration capacity of loam-textured soil in general) on flat land with intensive land use and cultivation; much larger than other fields. On the other hand, the infiltration rate and capacity were 6.68 cm/hour (medium) and 2.27 cm/hour respectively (smaller than the infiltration capacity of silty loam soil in general), and the smallest, on sloping land that was used and cultivated not intensively. It is necessary to educate farmers to cultivate the land as necessary according to the characteristics of the soil and plant needs, to maintain the sustainability of soil function and building sustainable vegetable farming in West Kayu Aro District, Kerinci Regency.

Abstract

Corn straw has the potential as a ruminant feed, but is constrained by low crude protein so it must be combined with Indigofera zollingeriana legumes which have high crude protein. The addition of Indigofera zollingeriana at different levels is expected to increase the crude protein of corn straw silage (Zea mays) and is expected to produce good silage quality. This study aims to determine the physical quality of corn straw silage (Zea mays) and Indigofera zollingeriana in different proportions. The variables observed in this study were the percentage of shrinkage, pH value, percentage of moldy silage, fleigh value, and physical quality (color, aroma, and texture). This experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatments and each treatment was repeated 6 times, so there were 18 experimental units, namely P1 = 80% Corn straw + 15% Indigofera zollingeriana + 4% bran + 1% mineral mixture; P2 = 70% Corn straw + 25% Indigofera zollingeriana + 4% bran + 1% mineral mixture; P3 = 60% Corn straw + 35% Indigofera zollingeriana + 4% bran + 1% mineral mixture. The results of the analysis of variance test showed that corn straw silage (Zea mays) with a mixture of Indigofera zollingeriana had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the percentage of moldy silage, fleigh value, and physical quality (color, aroma, texture) but had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the percentage of shrinkage and pH of silage. Based on this study, it can be concluded that the best silage proportion was obtained in the P2 treatment with 70% corn straw + 25% Indigofera zollingeriana + 4% fine bran + 1% mineral mixture, resulting in good quality silage.

Abstract

Background: Preserving low-quality forage as silage by adding high-quality forage, such as from legume groups, can create good-quality feed while maintaining forage availability. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the physical quality of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) silage by adding Moringa oleifera leaves. Methods: The research was arranged in a completely randomised design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments were as follows: P0 = elephant grass (100%) without moringa leaves (control), P1 = elephant grass (95%) + moringa leaves (5%), P2 = elephant grass (90%) + moringa leaves (10%), P3 = elephant grass (85%) + moringa leaves (15%). Results: Adding moringa leaves to the elephant grass silage did not significantly affect the silage's colour, aroma, texture, presence of fungi, or moisture content (P>0.05). However, it had a significant effect (P <0.05) on the percentage of shrinkage, final weight of silage, and dry matter. Conclusion: Elephant grass silage with the addition of 10% moringa leaves, showed the best physical characteristics regarding shrinkage and dry weight. Overall, elephant grass silage with the addition of moringa leaves exhibited good colour, aroma, and texture, with a tolerable presence of mould.
