The factory complex of PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk., Tarjun, South Kalimantan, Indonesia consists of cement manufacturing plants and employee settlements. Supporting facilities for the two main areas are open spaces in the form of waters (lakes, small rivers), grasslands (golf courses, grassy fields with several woody individuals growing on it), and forests (mangrove forests, secondary lowland forests, including shrubs). However, the data related to bird species that live in complex are not available yet. The purpose of this study was to inventory bird species in the ITP complex and to analyze qualitatively the presence of birds. These data will be used as a baseline for the development of the complex, comparative data for birds in the operational area of mining located 27 km outside the complex, and the completeness of the requirements for submitting a company performance rating (Proper). Birds were inventoried four periods between 2015-2016 at 06:00 - 08:00 and 16:30 - 18:00. The period here was treated as repetition. Observers equipped with binoculars and telephoto cameras walked around through footpaths and roads exploring the whole complex. In water and grassland areas, birds recorded can be at an observation distance of more than 50 m, whereas in forest areas, birds recorded were at a maximum distance of 50 m. A total of eighty-seven species and 41 families of birds were recorded. Of them, eighteen species and 8 families are waterbirds.The most recorded birds were classified as residents. All of the birds were recorded or observed easily every day or almost every day, at least at the research sites. Others (8 species) wee categorized as migratory birds. Fourteen species are protected by the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry, the Republic of Indonesia No. P.92/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/8/2018, 30 August 2018.

Abstract. Riefani MK, Soendjoto MA. 2021. Birds in the west coast of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 278-287. There is no comprehensive data on birds in the west coast of South Kalimantan, yet the areas are pressured by human activities, especially the rapidly growing tourism. This study aimed to investigate the diversity of bird species that occurred in the west coast of South Kalimantan and to compare the similarities of bird communities across four villages used as the sampling sites, i.e. Sungai Rasau, Sungai Bakau, Tabanio, and Pagatan Besar. Transect method combined with concentration count method were used to record diurnal bird species and number of individuals in five replications from April to September 2020. The observation area was 100 m from the shoreline toward the sea and 400 m from the shoreline toward the inland along 2 km with observation time was 07.00-11.00 and 16.00-19.00. Shannon Wienner species diversity index (H'), a Dice community similarity index based on the presence or absence of species (ISD), and a community similarity index (modification) based on the number of individuals per species (ISM) were analyzed. In total, there are 101 bird species recorded belonging to 41 families with Sungai Bakau Village has the highest number of species (81 species), while Pagatan Besar Village is the lowest (62 species). Thirty-four species are categorized as waterbirds. Twenty-three species are categorized as migratory birds. In terms of diversity index from highest to lowest are Sungai Bakau (4.04), Sungai Rasau (3.95), Pagatan Besar (3.65), and Tabanio (3.48). The similarity of the ISD community ranges from 0.74-0.84, while the ISM ranges from 0.73-0.90. One case (Sungai Bakau - Tabanio) shows that community similarity based on the number of individuals per species is smaller than based on the presence or absence of species. Based on the protection status following Indonesian government regulation, most (84.16%) birds are categorized as unprotected, while based on the conservation status of IUCN, the majority (91.09%) are Least Concern. The results of this study can be used as baseline information for sustainable management of the area in various aspects, including future research (such as on pest and disease control), tourism (such as bird watching), and education (such as field guide).

Spontaneously growing plants on revegetation sites of former coal mine in South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 1610-1620. Plants that grow and develop on the revegetation sites of post-coal mining are not only plant species that are intentionally planted, but also those that grow spontaneously. The aim of the research was to inventory plant species that grow spontaneously on revegetation sites of former coal mine sites in South Kalimantan Province and to analyze their presence mechanism and maintenance practices. Vegetation sampling was conducted on the plots established along the path with the size of each plot was 2 x 2 m2. All plants herbs (except grasses) and seedlings (shrubs, bushes, lianas and trees) within the plots were recorded and the vegetation composition was analyzed using Important Value Index as the parameter. Vegetation was monitored for 5 periods from 2018 to 2022 at the revegetation sites of two different planting years, i.e. 2016 and 2017. At Site-2016, 60 species belonging to 22 plant families were found and 71.67% of them grew spontaneously, while at Site-2017 there were 58 species belonging to 22 plant families and 70.69% of them were plants that grew spontaneously. Spontaneously growing species varied not only by location, but also by monitoring period. They are present at revegetation sites through seed dispersal mechanisms facilitated by natural activities (such as animals, wind, and water) as well as human activities. There are several management practices to facilitate vegetation succession, one of which is through spraying herbicides of weeds and invasive understorey species.

Heath forest (kerangas) is a unique ecosystem characterized with sandy soil with poor nutrients. This harsh condition makes heath forest has unique vegetation diversity as well as vulnerable to disturbances. In South Kalimantan, there is a heath forest located in Kuala Tambangan, Tanah Laut District which has never been explored. The research aims to analyze the diversity and composition of vegetation community in heath forest in Kuala Tambangan and identify factors that have the potential to damage the forest. Data was collected using the transect method placed at three sites in the heath forest. Along each transect, 10 observation plots with size 20 m × 20 m were established to record woody plants at the tree level. Within this plot, nested plots with size of 10 m × 10 m was created to record plants at pole level, 5 m × 5 m for saplings and herbaceous plants and 2 m × 2 m for seedlings, ferns and grasses. In total, there were 85 plant species across all observation plots with 79 species were found in the heath soils. Some typical heath forest species were found such as Melaleuca sp., Baeckea frutescens L. and Cratoxylum formosum (Jack) Benth. & Hook.fil. ex Dyer. Important Value Index (IVI) as well as Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H') varied, both by plant group and by study site. For example, the highest IVI of the tree group belonged to Acacia crassicarpa A.Cunn. ex Benth. and Acacia mangium Willd., and for pole level was Melaleuca sp. The lowest diversity occurred at Site B, while the highest was at Site C. The results on vegetation diversity, structure and composition suggest that this forest is in degraded condition. Fires and land conversion are factors that threaten the existence of heath forest in Kuala Tambangan. Our findings recommend the needs of efforts to protect and restore this unique ecosystem.

Diversity and composition of plants in ex-mining revegetation lands for cement raw materials in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 670-680. PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk carries out open-pit mining to obtain cement raw materials in Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, Indonesia, for the Tarjun-12 Factory. The company then undertakes the challenging task of revegetating ex-mining lands. However, there are no existing records of plant species post-revegetation, which occurred 13 to 16 years ago. This research is unique in its approach, aiming to document plant species and analyze their presence after revegetation. The methodology involves placing an observation path on each ex-mining land, with each path comprising 10 observation plots (20 m x 20 m) for recording woody plants at tree level. Each observation plot includes a small plot (10 m x 10 m) for data collection at the pole level, one plot (5 m x 5 m) for sapling level and non-woody plants (herbs), and one plot (2 m x 2 m) for seedling level and non-woody plants (grasses, ferns). The data were then analyzed after obtaining the importance value index, diversity index (Shannon-Wiener), and similarity index (Sorensen). The study revealed that more than 90% of the 155 plant species (54 families) are spontaneously grown plants, and most plant communities between ex-mining lands are dissimilar. The highest diversity is in woody plants at the sapling level and also trees on ex-laterite mining land. These results represent unique baseline data for 13-16 years post-revegetation.

Information on macrofungi across different land-cover types in rural areas, particularly in South Kalimantan Province, remains limited, although these organisms have potential applications in village development and community empowerment. This study aimed to record macrofungal species and their substrates in three land-cover types, namely dukuh (DU), agricultural land (AL), and shrubland (SL) in Mandiangin Timur Village, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan, Indonesia; to compare fungal communities among these land-cover types; and to evaluate their utilization by the local community. Fungi and their substrates were surveyed along a 200 m × 3 m transect in each land-cover type as a baseline inventory. Supporting data included microenvironmental parameters such as soil pH, air temperature, air humidity, and light intensity, as well as information on mushroom utilization obtained through community interviews. A total of 52 macrofungal species representing 25 families were recorded. Of these, 47 species (25 families) were found in DU, 15 species (8 families) in AL, and 9 species (4 families) in SL. The Sørensen similarity index was highest between AL and SL (0.50), followed by DU and AL (0.35), and lowest between DU and SL (0.29). Each species was observed growing on a single substrate. Most species (63.46%) occurred on dead wood, while the remainder were found on soil, litter, and living wood. Bolbitius reticulatus was the only species recorded on the living stem of durian (Durio zibethinus). Of the total species documented, 20 were reported by the community as being utilized, and 18 of these were both reported and recorded during the village survey. Most of these species are used as food. Regular education and training programs are therefore recommended to enhance community knowledge, promote safe utilization, and support the conservation of macrofungi.
